Principals Message As Thanksgiving approaches Im reflecting on the first semester and I am thankful for many things. There are the simple things like giving students Koala awards for reading on the ramp, receiving Halloween treats from a student, and having our Kindergarteners laugh at my crazy socks. I am even more thankful when I hear a student share with me they met their times table goal for fours, or reading science journals that shared not only results and conclusions, but reflections on their learning and what they still need to work on. I am thankful when students tell me they have read three Sunshine State Reader books. I appreciate being invited to listen to reports or watch students working on technology projects. Just recently, I could not be prouder watching our fifth graders teach; yes teach, To Be Kind to their classmates. Students read a book called, The Juice Box Bully to other classrooms. The book shared the message that not being kind is not allowed at the school. Children drew pictures of being kind to others at school and then made a promise to be kind too. The To Be Kind Movement started at Lake Brantley High under the direction of Adam Sherman, Seminole Countys Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Soltrens daughter, Danielle, is one of his students. Mrs. Soltren, Danielle, and Mr. Sherman approached me about bringing the TBK to Wekiva. The K in Koala stands for Kindness, so without hesitation, his students teamed up with our students in fifth grade and together they organized the activities. The collaboration was wonderful. Students prepared lessons; showing their leadership skills in the process. Building social and emotional skills is
just as important as developing the academic skills in our children. Kindness directly impacts learning too. Students start to notice the good things in one another. Practicing To Be Kind is now part of our school language. The month of November brings a cornucopia of school activities that will benefit the students, Assessment, fundraising, vision screening, American Education Week, Third Grade Veterans Day Performance, Super Scientists, Student Council Food Drive, Emergency Practice Drills, Report Cards, and remembering the history of Thanksgiving. I thank you for your understanding, cooperation, patience, and kindness! Until next time, Ms. Adamczyk
