Lesson Title: The Three Branches of Government Materials Needed: Paper, pencils, concept map, School House Rock Branches of Government video from YouTube Prerequisite Skills: Students will need to know the basic functions of the United States government and how a government is defined. Students will also need to know the foundation of the United States government, including the Constitution and the Bill of Rights (will be taught prior to this lesson). A B C D Lesson Objective: After learning about the three branches of the United States government, students will create an advanced graphic organizer depicting the functions and importance of each branch with fewer than two errors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Extended Practice and Transfer Time: 10 mins I will give students a copy of the concept map advanced organizer. I will explain to them that they will be completing it within their table groups. I will explain that they need to write out the three branches of government, its basic functions, and their importance to modern society. I will erase my work from the board, and will direct them to their textbook if they need additional information to write. 4. Check for understanding and provide student feedback: (How will you know students understand the skill or concept? How will they know they get it?) Time: 2 mins I will monitor student work during our guided practice and will provide assistance to students who are struggling before or during independent practice to ensure student understanding. 5. Assessment / Closure: (How do you evaluate student progress or provide closure to lesson?) Time: 10 min I will provide each student with a copy of the three branches of government quiz, listed below.
1. Describe the similarities and differences between the three branches of the U.S. Government. Fill in three facts about each branch as well as one for each overlap in the branches.

Judicial 1. 2. 3.
2. Short Answer: Which branch do you think is the most important to you and your family and why? 6. Adaptation for students who need extra help, time, or attention? During modeling and independent practice, I will monitor student progress to ensure student understanding of the task. Where necessary, I will provide students with assistance, which may include locating facts in the text, as well as discerning similarities and differences between the three branches of government. Extension for students of high ability? For students with high ability and/or who grasp the concept quickly, I will ask that they research and name at least one important person that falls within each branch of government. I will ask that they explain their job position and how it affects their branch of government. 7. References Consulted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5M50xBz1cU I created this lesson plan and quiz on my own. Once I knew how I was going to teach the lesson, I created a graphic organizer for my students (see next page). I wanted a way to teach students about the three branches of government in a way that showed them how they all tie together. I wanted to ensure there were ways built into the lesson plan to differentiate instruction.
Name______________________________________ List the three branches of government. Then, list their duties and responsibilities, as well as what each branch contains (President, House, Supreme Court, etc).
