1 a. What is a stoker? What are different types of stokers? Explain any two of them with sketch.

b. What is pulverized coal? Explain the BIN system of handling pulverized coal with a neat diagram. List the advantages and disadvantages of using pulverized coal. (10 Marks) c. What is the function of primary air and secondary air? (02 Marks) 2 a. Explain with a neat sketch the working of Benson boiler. What are advantages and disadvantages of it? ( 10 Marks) b. Explain with the help of sketches the principle of "Overfeed" and "Underfeed stokers".

b. What is a cooling tower? Explain the working of natural draught hyperbolic cooling tower with a neat sketch. (06 Marks) c. Determine the height of chimney to produce a static draught of 15mm of water. The temperature of the gases in the chimney is 270C and the temperature of air in the surroundings is 20C. Barometer reads 760mm of Hg. The value of R for air is 0.287kJ/kgK and for the flue gases is 0.255 kJ/kgK. (06 Marks) 4 a. Explain the necessity of cooling systems in a diesel engine. What are the methods of cooling the engine? Explain. ( 06 Marks) b. What is supercharging in diesel engines? Explain the main features of supercharging.

Draw : (i) Hydrograph for the given discharge and find average monthly flow & draw flow duration curve. (ii)The power available at mean flow of water if the available head is 80 meters at the site and overall efficiency of generation is 80percent. Take 30 days in a month.
