Learning Strategies For the Teacher


The following Learning Strategies activities are intended to help students become effective learners of English. These strategies may be used as a way to prepare students for the corresponding activities in the Students Book. However, since they are intended to teach students to become effective learners, they may also be applied to other Students Book activities. The strategies included in Top Notch 1 are: Vocabulary-building - auditory representation - categorizing - creating vocabulary lists - defining new words - using new expressions in different ways - personalizing - brainstorming Reading - scanning - inferring information - personalizing - reading for general idea - skimming - guessing meaning from context - preparing to read - taking notes Listening - preparing to listen - listening for general topics Conversation - clarifying information - keeping a conversation going The following are the suggested points in the units when students can do each activity: UNIT 1 Clarifying information Before Conversation Pair Work, on page 7 Scanning After B, Reading, on page 12
