or a country of over
1 billion Hindus and
an industry that
absolutely loves to celebrate Diwali parties with
Bollywood
song
and
dance. Diwali is the countrys largest national holiday, lends itself brilliantly
to poetry (festival of lights
imagery, the story of the
Ramayan, etc.), and is
practically bound to succeed by virtue of having
very little to compete with.
People are practically
aching for these songs! Yet
they hardly exist, much
less ones worth hearing
over and over.
To be sure, plenty of
great Diwali bhajans exist
outside the realm of
Bollywood (look no further
than Tulsidas classic Shri
Ram Chandra), many of
which have excellent covers by our favorite
p l a y b a c k
singers. But within the films? The
pickings are slim.
Let us consider the example of
Christmas as we
know it in America.
When we think of great
Christmas jingles, the
songs
we
name
predominantly come from
hit singers or church traditions with only a few
actually having made it to
popular culture from films,
despite Hollywood having
had a long and successful
musical film movement
(Judy Garlands Have
Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas comes to
mind).
So perhaps Bollywood
is no different. Because
singing a song about
Diwali actually requires
Diwali to be a major part of
the plot, the happy coincidence rarely occurred
much less with the good
fortune of also having
been a brilliant composition. Furthermore, celebrations like Holi for which we
can name at least a handful of terrific Bollywood
songs, actually lend themselves much better to an
upbeat and colorful party

The Tradition of
Gambling
The tradition of gambling on Diwali also has a
legend behind it. It is
believed that on this day,
Goddess Parvati played
dice with her husband
Lord Shiva, and she
decreed that whosoever
gambled on Diwali night
would prosper throughout
the ensuing year. Diwali is
associated with wealth
and prosperity in many
ways, and the festival of
'Dhanteras' ('dhan' =
wealth; 'teras' = 13th) is
celebrated two days
before the festival of
lights.

From Darkness
Unto Light...
The Significance of
Lights & Firecrackers
All the simple rituals of
Diwali have a significance
and a story to tell. The illumination of homes with
lights and the skies with
firecrackers is an expression of obeisance to the
heavens for the attainment of health, wealth,
knowledge, peace and
prosperity. According to
one belief, the sound of
fire-crackers are an indication of the joy of the
people living on earth,
making the gods aware of
their plentiful state. Still
another possible reason
has a more scientific
basis: the fumes produced
by the crackers kill a lot of
insects and mosquitoes,
found in plenty after the
rains.

Special Day for the Arya Samaj: It was the new moon

Special Day for the Jains: Mahavir Tirthankar, considered to be the founder of modern Jainism also attained

Special Day for the Sikhs: The third Sikh Guru Amar

all Sikhs would gather to receive the Gurus blessings.
In 1577, the foundation stone of the Golden Temple at Amritsar

6 people dead in
apparent domestic

GREENWOOD, South Carolina:
Authorities say an apparent domestic
dispute in a South Carolina home has
left six people dead. Greenwood County
Sheriff's Office spokesman John Long
told the Associated Press late Tuesday
that the dead include four adults and two
children. He said the bodies were discovered by a SWAT team that entered
the house "after several unsuccessful
attempts to make contact" with someone
inside. Long says officers first went to
the home in the city of Greenwood after
receiving a call from a man who said he
was thinking about hurting himself.
New York to
raise cigarette sale age
New York City Council has
voted to raise the minimum
age for buying cigarettes
from 18 to 21.New York will
now become by far the
most populous place in the
US to impose such a high
age limit, the Associated
Press reports. The new
age limit includes electronic vapour cigarettes.Across
the US there is a minimum
age for smoking of 18.
Some states have raised
the limit to 19 and at least
two other towns have
raised it to 21. The bill's
sponsor, City Councilman
James Gennaro, said it
would "literally save many,
many lives". Mr Gennaro,
whose mother and father
died from tobacco-related
illnesses, said: "I've lived
with it, I've seen it... but I
feel good today." Critics of
the measure have argued
that young people may turn
to the black market for cigarettes. New York mayor
Michael Bloomberg, who
supported the bill, has 30
days to sign it into law. The
measure would then come
into effect after 180 days.

I have been an ardent follower
and admirer of Sachin Tendulkar
from the days he came to play
Buchi Babu in Chennai. He is without doubt the greatest cricketer
India has produced. In fact one
should really say he ranks among
the top of all time great sports persons in the world
-- BCCI President N
Srinivasan
He had all the shots in the
world. Don't just think about the talent that he had, because he was
born with that. It is the effort that he
has put in which is for all young
cricketers to emulate. As for his last
test, I would want him to play his
200th test (on home ground) in
Mumbai
-- Sourav Ganguly
It's a sad day but everyone has
to go one day. He has given happiness to millions and millions of people and has never been controversial
-- Kapil Dev
It's the right time for him to retire
- after 200 tests. Pressure for him
has always been more than for anyone else because people expected
him to score a century every time
he went out to bat

Bradman was quoted as saying before

The fare is calculated using a
series of gps-data and sophisticated algorithms and once the
drop-off destination has been
reached the driver clicks the app
on his smart phone again to end
the ride. Within seconds another
screen appears which allows the
driver to see the fare and rate
the customer (on a scale of 1 to
5). The driver is then free to take
not pick up flags. The Uber system matches drivers to customers. In fact the customer can
track the progress of the Uber
vehicle on the Uber gps map that
they have downloaded on their
smart phone. The customer also
knows the name of the Uber driver, his or her Uber rating, and the
make and color of vehicle coming to pick them up. The driver
knows that the customer information is already on file with
Uber so this arrangement provides a greater degree of safety
than the normal taxi/customer
relationship.
Uber started operations in
San Francisco and is now operating in some 35 cities globally. It
has over 300 employees and its
growth has been phenomenal. It
is a growth cycle that is likely,
with the backing of the PUC, to
continue to grow as hi-tech
meets the entrenched taxi industry head-on!
