Following an impressive set, Sheep, Dog & Wolf - the stage name of Aucklands Daniel McBride - took home the prize. McBride says: Im stunned. Im just so happy. LUCKLESS
CHICKS HOTEL
Its easy to see Matangi as a Jackson Pollock. Meaning, a shit-load gets splattered onto canvas and next second, hey presto - we have questionable art! But its not like that. At least, not once you get over the shock of so much being thrown onto one album. Afterwards, you see the method behind MIAs seemingly frantic madness. Mathangi Maya Arulpragasm (MIAs name in the real world) has had a rather crappy time of it, lately. Shes in the midst of a legal battle regarding her ipping the bird at Americas most holiest of holies - the Superbowl. Theres a court case for custody of her young son, and, just to heap another log on her bonre of problems, shes had more than a few issues getting this latest record out to the masses. But Matangi nally gets to see daylight and its a good, if at times confusing, thing. The albums aptly named for one Hindu goddess of music and learning. That rst connection isnt rocket science but the second plays into the troubles that have plagued this 38-year-old rapper/singer/artist. Matangi is a tangible representation of rebirth for MIA, marking a second coming for her music career after the lukewarm response to her third release, MAYA, from 2010. And just so you didnt miss it, shes loaded Matangi with every bullet she possesses, ring off each round with a self-assured glee. The albums gorged with her trademark London-accented raps, frenetic drums, thunderous bass, and general, dancehall/hip-hop/indiepop, mash-up madness. That berserk, smashed-up quality comes to the fore on tracks like Warriors and aTENTion. Warriors is a psychedelic tilt with more than a hint of eastern-inuence. While aTENTion cools the irons before cranking into a crazed, pop-behemoth of a song, that still needs to take its pills to keep from going totally berko. Theres the high prole Bad Girls, which seems to appear on every soundtrack of the last year or so. But, seemingly to balance out such commercial ear-wormery, are the pointed little reminders that this lady of London remains as socially aware as ever. She pokes a stick at YOLO culture with YALA, a fun yet insightful dig at gen Ys try-to-be-different-bybeing-the-same, methodology. Further hounding the clueless on Boom-Skit, with lines like, all I see is poor people, they should be on ghetto-gram. And thats just scratching the surface, because in MIAs layer cake of art, theres always more to put on the canvas.

Stephen Kings 1976 thrilled/horror shocked audiences to their core. The idea of a coming-of-age girl, with telekinetic powers, was a radical concept for the time and turned into a hit. Now, Kick-Ass Chlo Grace Moretz takes on the titular role, with a new kind of scary evil of a girl wronged by her peers.
When rst interviewed for the butlers job, Cecil Gaines is informed: We have no tolerance for politics at the White House. Yes, its easy for cynics to sneer, but with every main character afforded some complexity, what could have been Civil Rights 101 from the daytime TV-movie school is nowhere near as black and white. Inspired by the real life of White House butler Eugene Allen, Lee Daniels (Precious) takes the truth and ladles on heaps of Hollywood ction. Creating the character of Cecil allows the lm to take in a sweeping history of US Civil Rights from the harsh life of a 1920s Southern cotton picker, to an audience with the newly elected Obama. Yes, it could easily be accused of oversentimentality, simplication, liberal leanings and melodramatic ourishes but then, so couldGandhiandForrest Gump. The minor cast reads like a dream talkshow guest list Jane Fonda,
Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey, Terrence Howard, Vanessa Redgrave but theyre all pretty good. As the Presidents, Alan Rickman makes a great Reagan, Robin Williams a ne Eisenhower, Liev Schreiber a light-relief Lyndon Johnson. The only casting hiccup is John Cusack who remains uncannily unlike Nixon, fake nose and all. But the spotlight belongs to Forest Whitaker as Cecil and Oprah Winfrey as his wife Gloria, with both delivering superbly realised performances. The unshowy direction serves a script juxtaposing racism, sexism, sentimentality and serious social concern. It may be a TV movie writ large, (thinkRootswith Winfrey), but it works because, true or not, theres enough warmth, intelligence, heart, humour and humanity at the core ofThe Butlerto serve as more than supercial entertainment.

WESTFEST 2014
CONCERT SEASON COMES and goes and for many metal fans, its a sad time. Soundwave somehow gets better and better, Vans Warped Tour passes us by and many of the metal Gods never quite make it here. It doesnt cost that much to y to Australia, does it? In some cases, it does. But, we nally get something to call our own. Westfest 2014. Two nights at Vector Arena showcasing the worlds best rock, metal and punk acts, needless say, shit will get crazy. As if that wasnt enough, Westfest is bringing back bands that havent been here for far too long, artists that have never ventured down this far and a multi platinum selling beast from thrash metal. So, lay down an excitement tarp because the rst of the line up is; Korn, Rob Zombie, Megadeth, Asking Alexandria, Five Finger Death Punch, Black Veil Brides, Eagles Of Death Metal, August Burns Red, Whitechapel, Terror and Saving Grace with more acts to be announced. Korn are following through from their latest album The Paradigm Shift and theyre in ne form with original guitarist Brian Head Welch back in the fold for the rst time since 2003. Itll be the rst time theyve returned to our shores in over ve years, with a lled out back catalogue including; Untitled, Korn 111 and Path Of Totality. As for the bands that havent yet ripped your face off on a New Zealand stage, Asking Alexandria are right up there. Theyre coming off the back of their record From Death To Destiny which was highly anticipated (and stole the number ve spot on the Billboard top 200) and looks to propel them to international stardom, theyve held the prestigious place of main stage at Download Festival. Dave Mustane is also coming along - and hes bringing Megadeth with him - and hes in the ranks of those who will be arriving here for the rst time. And another with a new release, Super Collider. The multi platinum band are playing alongside the master of horror rock, the one and only Rob Zombie, who will also be down here for the rst time.
Zombie has taken his show all across the world and played with the likes of Joey Jordison (Slipknot, Murderdolls) so its about time he brought his brand of musical theatre this far down. To round off the bands that havent been here before, Black Veil Brides have heard the cries of the BVB Army will be making their way down to Vector as well. But it gets better and it gets heavier, much, much heavier. With genre front runners Whitechapel, a dening force in contemporary heavy music whose rst three albums, including the latest self titled release, bring some of the most aggressive, hostile and dynamic music to the scene theyre a force to be reckoned with. At the tail end of the rst announcement, are hardcore punk rockers Terror who are right back at and will be bringing spirit, ght and essence to their performances of songs that would make death himself resurrect the dead for one nal wall of death. And the pull no punches homegrown Saving Grace, whose modest beginnings have led them to multi record deals followed ve star reviews, headlining tours and festival shows across Australasia. Announcement number two is on its way and if the rst one is anything to go off, Westfest is shaping up to destroy the metal scene in a way New Zealands never experienced. Get Excited.

An update on the ofcial Gran Turismo 6 website reveals plans to add a course creator to the game. The Course Maker app will be added in a title update some time after the games December 6 launch, allowing players to create and race on their own tracks. Additionally, a separate update will add the ability to generate custom courses using real life GPS coordinates gathered using a smartphone application. Other news out of the update includes a return of B-Spec mode, which lets you manage a team as a race director, and a GPS Visualiser, also coming in a future update.
While in previous titles, you could mostly choose to ignore side missions if you wanted to power through and get to the freaky ending that you never really had a hope of understanding, in AC4, in order to keep advancing on through the story, you must make at least a few necessary upgrades to the Jackdaw. For this youll need to make some serious money, which can be achieved by looting chests, selling items youve found (or stolen, or hunted), or taking on contract assassin jobs to make quick cash. As upgrades are performed throughout the game, the Jackdaw goes from average little ship that could, through to genuinely terrifying threat to all it encounters. For a platform supposedly on its last legs, AC4 looks sweet as a nut on the 360. The water effects in particular are staggeringly good at times. I cannot wait to see what its going to look like on the next gen consoles in the next few months. Its a boat-load of fun, too, and comes highly recommended for fans of the series.

GINNY BLACKMORE
A RECENTLY BROADCASTED TED talk by English education specialist Dr Ken Robinson discussed the future of the education system, with a particular emphasis on lost opportunities. Robinson argued that in the new world employers will seek out students who are creative, with good ol academic skills such as Maths and English being less important. While she wouldnt exactly come out and say it, singer/songwriter Ginny Blackmore is a living example of that theory. On the phone from Aussie shes bright and breezy as she tells me all about her meteoric career rise from a shy, uncondent student afraid to put her hand up in class to a successful writer whos worked with Christine Aguilera, sung in the board room of Epic records to performing her own music, making a hit video and recording her own debut album. Hang on what? Back up the bus! Blackmore left school at 16 to become a musician, but she didnt drop out, she was encouraged by her principal and supported by her parents, Blackmores father was a singer musician in the local church. You see many people begin singing in church. I have to admit though I love RnB. At 9 years old she was blown away by Lauren Hill performing in Sister Act II. My rst album was a Fugees album, which my Dad bought me but I got to know Destinys Child, Usher, Pink and Michael Jackson. When she left school a deal was made with her parents to work diligently on her song writing, as a serious concern. I had a nine to ve job, writing, and if there wasnt some kind of noise coming out of my bedroom, my dad was in there wanting to know why! At age 20 Blackmore took the punt and relocated, unscripted and unsupported to London with a plan to earn a living writing for others. Blackmore had pretty little to trade, saved for a self produced demo shed recorded on equipment bought for her by her new friend Daniel Beddingeld. I was doing something at Parachute Festival, and I was tapped on the shoulder by Daniel who told me I amazing and he ended up helping me out. Her work was shopped around and eventually scored a deal with Sony/ATV. However, she found it very hard to write for others, yearning to perform for herself instead. My time in London was hard, I didnt really have a plan, I was
struggling to get record labels to believe in me, beyond just writing and because my songs were deeply personal, it was hard to make them work for others. However, people did listen. Veteran music manager Mark Sudack (Mariah Carey) heard her promo, which featured early versions of Bones and Sing for Me, who not only signed her on the spot but introduced her to songwriter-producer and A&R man Tricky Stewart (Beyonc, Rhianna). That was a magical day, meeting these amazing and powerful people. Daunting too, no doubt because that meeting eventually led to an introduction to Epic Records CEO LA Reid. Blackmore was asked to sing Bones for him -twice! The rst time I was very nervous, I choked. But Reid was convinced that she had one of the best voices hes ever heard. He encouraged her to come out of her shy shell and sing it again, this time with more conviction. He called in the ofce staff for audience encouragement. Blackmores second run brought the house down and reduced many to tears. It landed her the deal and now shes writing material for a fulllength album. Its going well. I get to sing my own material, which is satisfying. And that includes Sing For Me which was performed by Christina Aguilera. I got own out to LA to rework it. It was cool, my lyrics were all from a Kiwi girls point of view so some needed a bit of rework, as she didnt always relate. Its a bit surreal because everything is set up hours before she arrives, all perfect. I actually decided I wasnt going to sit waiting like a puppy dog, everyone was all waiting in anticipation of her arrival, and so I popped into the loo the moment she was scheduled to arrive. When I came out it was all (puts on casual voice) Oh, helloo Being casual at that meeting was great, The Kiwi laid back approach helped, overall. And now Blackmore is performing her own material, shes in Australia having just come from a supporting Ed Sheeran around the USA. It was really special when Id perform Bones and could see fans down the front, in places like San Francisco, mouthing all the words. Now shes nally coming home, to perform this week at Galatos and later at Parachute Festival. Welcome home Ginny.

sALt-N-PePA
Salt-N-Pepa was one of the rst all-femalerapcrews, but how did you all come to be making music together in the rst place? Well, Pepa and I were in school together, we were also friends at the time and we also worked part time at Sears together as telephone operators. I was dating Hurby Luv Bug at the time who was a producer and he was going to Centre of Media Arts and he had to do a project and he wanted to use Pep and I to rap on the track. The song ended up being The Showstopper which was an answer to Doug E Freshs hit The Show. So what started out as a project ended up getting played on the radio. Shortly after this we recorded an album, which was Hot, Cool & Vicious. You entered the industry at a time when rap music was believed to be afadand record companies were reluctant to sign rap artists. Were you guys aware of this at the time, did it affect or inuence your music? We were very aware that it was particularly difcult for females at that particular time. Ironically, we promised an independent label that we could nish a whole album for $5k so Hurby, Pep and myself literally lived in the studio trying to deliver on this promise, and the album we made was Hot, Cool & Vicious that went double platinum! Of the ve studio albums, which was the hardest to make and why? Brand New was the most challenging to make because we did itcompletelyon our own. We had split fromworkingwith Hurby and it was aweirdtime for us as we were transitioning between record companies. A lot of different things were going on personally andprofessionallyat the time andIfeel like that interfered with the process. We were also having some internal struggles, which made the process alittleharder. Which was the most rewarding and why? Very Necessary was by far the most rewarding. Our lead single was Shoop which Pep put together and we had to ght to convince the record company to even release it! We really believed in the track so we fought hard and when we won the battle, it ended up becoming a massive
worldwide hit so that was very rewarding. The band officially disbanded in 2002. Were you sick of the industry? The reason I left the group was because I was just exhausted and I was disappointed in the business at the time, and Pep and I had become estranged due to external interferences in our relationship. So I made it public that I just had to take some time out to quiet my life. So I left and stayed at home raising my children and being a Mum. I leaned heavily on my faith to get me through that time. Were the mixed emotions about this break up? Yes it was very difcult because I wasnt able to articulate my emotions and feelings to Pep. Me leaving came as a surprise to Pep and really hurt her so we had to take some time to go through rebuilding our relationship and learning to forgive each other. We actually ended up going to counseling which gave us some understanding of our relationship and taught us how to communicate again. It was very hard for both of us. And the upcoming tour, are you guys excited about this? We are so excited to be back on the road. Weve been to Australia three times in the last four years and we just love it, the fans embrace us so warmly. It was great news when we found out we were coming to Auckland this time as well. Do you have a favourite song or songs to play live? We love performing Shoopit has such a great energy live What are you most looking forward to about the Auckland gig? We are just looking forward toreconnecting with our fans. Its been such a long time since weve been to Auckland, something like 19 years! So we are just so excited to come over and see and reconnect with everyone.
