Questions 1 Why was Magdalla Port selected? Was the decision right?

: Reasons for selecting Magdalla port: Accessibility-Wheat was procured from Punjab and Magdalla was the most convenient port because the port is connected to Surat National Highway 16 and by rail and road to towns of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Northern India and Northern Maharashtra so it is easily accessible to the port from the production site. Less Congestion-Magdalla was less congested than Kandla port, which is also a major port of coastline of Gujarat. Kandla port was so congested that sometime vessels had to wait for as much as 28 to 30 days and at Kandla port midstream loading fetch usually higher stevedoring cost but the Magdalla has 18 km long navigational channel with large as well as daughter vessels.

But the decision of selecting Magdalla port was not a right decision because as Magdalla has the expertise in dealing with goods such as Iron ore, coal, cement, limestone, scraps, machinery spares etc, it has no any idea how to deal with wheat, rice. Apart from this Magdalla port has limited space for storage so that sometime importer had to dump their product on the adjoining private land.

Also, Hajira port was located just opposite to this port which was far better developed.

2 Why was the decision for early loading taken? The port had no technical knowledge of handling the wheat => early loading would allow them more time to handle it, as this is the first time Imprecision about entire time of loading The shipper was expecting some despatch as the effective loading was sooner Eventually, they had right to act so, as well see after! 3 What went wrong creating delay in loading Delay due to non clearance on documents Survey of every truck as separate cargo caused delay Loading took more time due to non availability of high tide for barge operations Port authorities stopped wheat loading for 11 days to allow other ships to complete their operations 4 Why it was decided to bleed the cargo at the jetty and what were the consequences? It was decided to bleed the cargo at the jetty because: Bleeding the cargo at mid sea required additional labour. Because of the festival of Holi the next day, it was decided to bleed the cargo at the jetty and then load it in the barges

using jholly slings. The vessel Arabian Sea was parked 25 km away so it takes a lot of time to transport the goods The consequences due to this where: it laid in the open very close to big heaps of cement and sulphur. It was also not far from coal stored in a nearby stockyard Cement is discharged through hoppers and there is a cloud of dust when this is done, Coal is discharged by grab cranes into dumper trucks
