PERMANENT MAGNET GENERATORS

How a permanent Magnet Generator works. As shown in the diagram , there's a permanent magnet in the core and it is surrounded by conducting wires in the stator. When the magnet is rotated, magnetic field created by the magnet is also rotated. This rotation is creating electricity in the stator conducting wires. It continues to run on the thrust of magnetic forces. The magnet in the PMG move constantly due to their polarity. According to the powerfulness of the magnetic field created by the magnet, generated electricity may vary. In industry there are generators in the range sufficient to supply electricity requirement of a small home to large power plants.

Advantages of Permanent Magnet Generators. There are various advantages in generating power from PMG. Efficient & less harmful to the environment. - Since this is not using any fuel to burn, no emission is added to the environment & this is less harmful. Most importantly electricity is free of cost. Less space requirement compared to solar & wind turbines. - To build a windmill it requires a large area, huge investment, continuous maintenance. To generate power from solar, it requires a huge area for installation of solar power. Independent from the weather conditions & hence advantageous over wind, solar or hydro energy. - For installation of a wind mill, totally depend on the weather conditions. Any variation in the weather like low pressure, generated power is dropped or may be even zero. On rainy seasons, solar power generation is reduced and the sunny weather is always changing throughout the day also & it is available in day time only. Therefore generated power is varying even during the day time. Hydro energy is totally depended upon the quantity of water flowing. This is changed throughout the year in dry season and rainy season. Highly reliable since the magnets are specially designed to withstand about 25 years. - As mentioned above, wind, solar and hydro energies are not reliable and they are depending on various conditions. Free of noise pollution. Compared with fuel power generators, Solar power generation, windmill, hydro power generators, PMG is very cheap to install & easy maintain since no brushes are involved.

Disadvantages of Permanent Magnet Generators. PMG cannot be start & stop with ease. Difficult to control or regulate the operation. Since Magnetic flux is constant, external force is required to start. PMG size is big for generating high torque compared to electromagnet size for generating a same torque.
