1. INTRODUCTION TO MECHATRONICS AND MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS

1.1. INTRODUCTION TO MECHATRONICS
!" Definitions of Mechatronics "the interdisciplinary field of engineering dealing with the design of products whose function relies on the synergistic integration of mechanical and electronic components coordinated by a control architecture." in this textbook "the synergistic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems thinking in the design of products and manufacturing processes" Journal of Mechatronics "integration of electronics, control engineering and mechanical engineering" - Mechatronics Electronic Control Systems in Mechanical Engineering

Examples of mechatronic systems Aircraft flight control and navigation system Automobile electrical fuel injection and antilock brake system Automated manufacturing robots and numerically controlled (NC) machine tools Home appliance bread machines, washing machines, and etc. !" Why we learn Mechatronics? Most of advanced or newly developed systems use the knowledge of Mechatronics. Industries need a generalist, mechatronic system designer. -2-

EXAMPLE 1.1 Mechatronic System Copy Machine Major components Analog circuit controlling lamps, heaters, and other power circuits. Digital circuit control digital displays, indicator lights, buttons, and switches. Microprocessor coordinating all of the functions in the machine. Optical sensors and micro-switches detecting the presence or absence of paper, it proper positioning, and checking the positions of doors and latches. Encoder tracking motor rotation. Servo and stepper motors loading and transporting the paper, turning the drum, and indexing the sorter. Copying process An original in a loading bin scanning metal drum with charge distribution the paper from a loading cartridge with an electrostatic deposition of ink toner powder heated to the paper delivered the copy to an appropriate bin by a sorting mechanism.

HW 1.1 Choose one system that you are accustomed to and can be classified into mechatronic system. Sort the major components of the system into four parts as shown in Fig. A. Explain the function of each component and the whole working process. HW 1.2 Make a few examples of non-mechatronic systems, which use only mechanical or electrical parts. For example, a system consists of only mechanical elements. Compare the performance and flexibility of these systems with the mechatronic system in HW 1.1.

1.2. INTRODUCTION TO MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS

Transducer sensing device that converts a physical input into an output, usually voltage. Signal processor performing filtering and amplification. Recorder recording or displaying the output of signal processor. EXAMPLE 1.2 Measurement System Digital Thermometer Thermocouple converting temperature to a small voltage. Amplifier increasing the magnitude of the voltage. A/D (analog to digital) converter converting the analog voltage to a digital signal. LEDs (light emitting diodes) displaying the value of temperature.
