Unit 3 Bonfire Night!

Lesson 3 Parties School : Primary School Valeni, Olt Teachers name: Cocosila Valentina Roxana As a teacher I have noticed that students but particularly children who are beginners, have a difficulty in learning adjectives and placing them in the correct place in the sentence. English puts the adjective before the noun. Romanian, on the other hand, like some other languages, places the noun first and the adjective second (eg: 'car red') - confusing for any beginning student, but particularly for young children. Expected Learning Outcome - Students will learn at least 10 new adjectives, know what they mean and be able to place them in the correct order in a sentence. Materials and Resources Blackboard , Adjectives vocabulary handout Timeframe - 100 minutes (2 hours) Teaching Procedure: Step One: Explain to students that an adjective describes something (the easiest way to explain what it does) - a color, a size, a shape, a nationality etc. Give a few examples of adjectives and write them on the whiteboard. I use simple examples like 'red', 'big', 'short' etc. Point to examples of the adjectives in the classroom to clarify and make sure your beginner students understand. Step Two: Once I am sure the students understand the concept of an adjective,I write five examples of adjectives on the board, making sure the class understands the adjective appears before the noun in English. Model the adjective phrases, and ask students to repeat. Step Three: After revising the adjectives, the teacher writes on the the blackboard the new lesson The comparison of adjectives. The students must understand that for the comparative degree the short adjectives receive an er ending and the long adjectives receive more in front of them. Clean Cleaner Expensive More expensive For the superlative degree the short adjectives receive an est ending and the log adjectives receive the most in front of them.

Rules of spelling: 1.The silent e is left and it is added er for the comparative degree and est for the superlative degree (large larger ). 2.The consonant after short vowel is doubled (big bigger ). 3.The -y changes in i when before y is a consonant (dirty - dirtier ). This is only for long adjectives. The long adjectives dont leave out the y (shy shyer ) Students read the exercises 7 and 8 from page 44 and find the adjectives. Irregular adjectives: Good Better (The) best Bad Worse (The) worst Much More Most Many More Most Little Less (The) Least Little Smaller Smallest Homework 1 : Exercise 11 from page 49. Homework 2 : Exercise 12 from page 49. Evaluation/Assessment: 1. participation in class, 2. students' understanding of vocabulary
