Parade Marshal: STORY BOOK CHARACTERS

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Germantown Community Library, The Friends of the Library received funding from the Germantown Tourism/Community Betterment Committee to sponsor the Story Book characters as parade marshals for the 2013 Christmas Festival parade. Volunteers from Youth Futures will assist the Friends. Characters that are scheduled to appear are: Arthur, Clifford, Cat in the Hat, Curious George, Elmo, Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Raggedy Ann and Andy, Snoopy, Spider Man and the Grinch. The Story Book characters will walk in the parade and stroll around the library afterwards. Also, the Library Board has approved a 'Win a Brick' contest. The 5 winners will receive a commemorative 4 x 8 brick installed in the outdoor patio off the children's library. Bricks will be engraved with the name or message of the winner's choice. Sign up begins at the Librarys Christmas Festival display, and continues until Dec 17. The 50th Anniversary was made possible when longtime Germantown resident and former bank president Emma Duerrwaechter surprised the community by donating $30,000 for a building to be used as Germantowns first library. Born in 1881, Emma grew up and attended school in Germantown. She followed her father, Philip G. Duerrwaechter, into the family banking business. In 1923, Emma was voted director and bank president. She was known as Wisconsins First Lady of Banking, and remained president of the bank until 1959. She passed away in 1969 at the age of 87. Germantowns first library was built on land donated by the Germantown Volunteer Fire Department. With Emma Duerrwaechters generous donation, an 1,800 square foot library was built on Park Avenue near Firemans Park and opened in December of 1963. Initially the new library had about 2,000 holdings and was open for 20 hours per week. By the late 1970s, the librarys holdings had grown to 19,000 and more space was needed to provide library service for Germantowns growing population. To this day, the former library still stands at Firemans Park and houses the offices of the Germantown Volunteer Fire Company. By 1980, Germantowns population had increased dramatically to 10,731. The Duerrwwaechter Memorial Library on Park Street had outgrown its 1,800 square foot building. In a 1981 referendum, taxpayers approved an 8,800 square foot library on Village property off Mequon Road. When the new library opened in July of 1982, it had over 19,000 holdings and annual circulation of 52, 398. Over the next 20 years, the Village of Germantowns population continued to grow, as did library usage. For example, between 1987 and 1996, circulation increased by 61%. In the 2000 census, Germantowns population increased to 18,260. By the end of 2001, the librarys holdings had increased to 83,896, and annual circulation reached an all-time high of 202,720. In 1998, initial approval was given for a new expandable library facility to be built to the west of the current library. The third Germantown Library building opened in 2002. This 26,000 square foot building can be expanded by 13,000 square feet in the future. Today, the library has over 200,000 holdings and annual circulation exceeding 300,000.

Every October, Germantown High School graphic design students embark upon the challenge of creating simple, coloring pages for the Germantown Christmas Parade coloring contest and Express News Coloring Book. This year's theme is "A Storybook Christmas." Under the direction of instructor, Traci Gentilli, students design pages. Kayla Beck, senior, submitted the design that was chosen by the Chamber of Commerce to run in the October 28th issue of the Express News for the coloring contest. Children from Colgate, Germantown, Hubertus and Richfield will color and submit their entries for five chances to win a ride in the Christmas Parade on November 10th. The other graphic design students will have a chance to have their coloring page design featured throughout the coloring book. Each page is sponsored by a local business. The talented high school graphic design students enjoy the challenge of simplifying their artistic expressions and following the project guidelines in order to produce artwork that will meet the intention - bringing joy to young children throughout the local community. "Besides focusing on formats and creating original artwork, the global lesson is to use your talents to help others in your community and beyond." Traci Gentilli, instructor. This project would not be possible without the cooperation of the graphic design teacher and students, the Chamber of Commerce, the Express News and the participating local business sponsors.

Germantown High School Senior, Tommy Paschke, illustrated the winning entry for the annual Christmas Coloring Contest, "A Story Book Christmas." Tommy is currently a Graphic Design student and is taking an Independent Study in Drawing. He is musically inclined and plays the saxophone as well as acting as a drum major for the marching band. Tommy plans to attend Concordia University and will enter the Graphic Design program as he looks forward to a successful career in the arts.

The following items will be collected: Non-perishable food items for the St. Boniface/St. Gabriel Food Pantry by the First Bank Financial Center New childrens pajamas for Our Kids Closet. Residents can bring these items with them to the parade, explained Lynn Grgich, Executive Director of the Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce, and the representatives from these groups will pick them up as they walk the route. Two Local Businesses Help Fund Christmas Parade

The sponsors for this years parade are Germantown Clinic Columbia St. Marys and the Deutschtadt Heritage Foundation. Sponsorship is open to the public each year and interested parties have the opportunity to use it as a way to benefit the village while raising awareness for their group or business. Angela Krinn, clinic manager for Germantown Clinic Columbia St. Marys, said she and her colleagues are really excited about their involvement in the event. We saw there was a need in the community and we thought it would be a great thing to do, so we stepped in, she said. One of the clinics physicians, Dr. Dirk Steinert, a Chamber member, got the ball rolling on their sponsorship, and some of the facilitys other physicians and staff members will be walking in the parade. We look forward to having the chance to wish the community a merry Christmas, said Krinn. Charlie Hargan, president of the foundation and a member of the Christmas Parade Committee, said his group was looking at different ways to donate money to the community. We donate to different thingsincluding scholarships to graduating high school students and to the Kiwanis Fourth of July eventso we took this opportunity to donate to the Christmas Parade, he said. Chamber Executive Director Lynn Grgich said the Chamber is greatly appreciative of all the events sponsors. We are very grateful for the sponsorship weve received for the parade, she said. This years sponsorship by local businesses has exceeded that of past years and that helps us bring more entertainment to the community.
