Typically gender is normally portrayed in a way which shows the man being superior to the woman.

This is reflected many times in the clip that I am analysing, one instance of this is when the master comes across as powerful and dominant towards the start. He orders Martha to kneel. It is normally stereotypical for women to kneel when they are giving oral sex therefore this could be one reason why this term is used, so that the audience perceive this. Adding onto this, another way that male dominance is shown is through the use of high-angle shots. As the master is on a platform it is very easy for this to be done and is done in a lot of situations like this. It connotes male supremacy as it would be seen that the man is looking down on the woman as she is supposedly lesser than him. This is frequent throughout the whole clip and also with the doctor as the end. On the contrary to this point towards the final stages when Martha elaborates on her plan to ridden the master and save the doctor, she is portrayed as powerful. Since she has established some sort of authority high angle shots are now used on her behalf. Furthermore when the woman in red starts to take part in the plan and says doctor, along with everyone else, high angle shots are used to show her looking down on the master. Sound is a big part in the way that gender is represented in this clip. The master is very abrupt, loud and speaks with confidence whereas when Martha talks she seems to be quieter. This here represents males as strong characters as they are always there to be heard or seen. Alternatively, when Martha breaks up her plan she begins to speak up and becomes loud here representing women to be equal as men. When everyone starts chanting at the end of the novel it shows that the genders are equal as, arguably, they have all saved the world together. The woman in red who stands next to/near to the master comes across as a very significant character however for those studying the representation of gender, like me, she is the complete opposite. The colour red normally connotes seduction and sexiness. To me, it comes across that she is only there to be part of the male gaze, which is to attract males into watching the programme. As she is pretty woman wearing a colour that is associated with seduction we can see that this is so. When Martha is brought into the room she is surrounded by 2 men in dressed in clothes that resemble army officers and holding guns. This shows how she is a prisoner and that the men are dominant and more powerful fitting the stereotype.
