Sonja Chemistry 29/10/13 Reaction Rates Research Question: How does change in temperature affect the reaction rate? Aim: The aim of this lab is to investigate the effect of temperature in a reaction rate of HCl and Zn. 2HCl + Zn = ZnCl2 + H2 Hypothesis: I think that the higher the temperature is, the faster the reaction rate will be because higher temperature implies higher average kinetic energy of molecules and more collisions per unit time. Variable: Dependent Time Constant Amount of water in the beakers Amount of acid in the test tubes Amount of zinc metal used Independent Temperature Materials: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Three test tubes Thermometer Ice Water Erlenmeyer Flask Zinc 3 grams 0.2M HCl Three Beakers

9. Goggles 10. Lab Coat 11. Stopwatch 12. Hot Plate Procedure: 1. Fill the same amount of water into all the beakers, about half full, so the water won't overflow when it's boiling. 2. Fill ten ice cubes into the first beaker, and put the thermometer in. Frequently check the temperature, and add water or ice cubes to adjust it, so it gets down to at least zero. 3. Using the hot plate, heat up the other two beakers, take the first one off when it's a bit above 50, stick in the thermometer and make sure the temperature is 50 when you begin step 6. The other beaker is to be 90, so take it off the hot plate a bit above 90 in case it cools down a little. 4. Take the scale and weigh out 3 times 1gram of zinc metal. Keep the three gram-portions separately. 5. Take three test tubes, and fill them with 2cm of acid each. Make sure it is exactly the same amount, as it influences the reaction rate. Place each tube in a different beaker, and wait until the acid has the same temperature as the water it's in. 6. Create a table to put in all your results. Now get your stopwatches ready. Take the first beaker, it doesn't matter which one. Drop in one gram of zinc metal. As it touches the acid, you start timing. Fill in your table with the time the reaction started, and the time it finished. 7. When all the reactions are finished, spill out the acid and zinc metal in a sink without touching it, and wash out the test tubes. Results: Table 1: Reaction Time Temperature 7 55 90 Time the Reaction Started 50 seconds 20 seconds Instantly Total Reaction Time 52 minutes 45 minutes 36.45 minutes

Table 1: This table shows the reaction time of HCl and Zn in different temperatures. Discussion: As you can see from the results above, the higher the temperature of the water in the beaker was, the faster the reaction time was. Due to the fact that we only had 90 minutes to complete this experiment and the reactions lasted a very long time, there was no time to try this again to see if the numbers were accurate so I wouldnt really say that the data is 100% reliable. Due to the fact

that the reaction time does get faster as the temperature gets higher, this just shows that our data also isnt 100% inaccurate. Conclusion: Comparing my hypothesis to my data, I think that its safe to say that my hypothesis was accurate. I think that I could have been more confident about saying my hypothesis was correct if I did more trials to make sure that my data was 100% correct. The only thing that I suggest for next time is that we get more time to do this experiment so that we get a different number of trials before coming to a conclusion.
