ASSIGNMENT

1. Consider a steam power plant operating on the ideal regenerative Rankine cycle with one open feed water heater.Steam enters the turbine at 15 Mpa and 600OC and is considered in the condenser at a pressure of 10 kPa. Some steam leaves the turbine at a pressure of 1.2Mpa and enters the open feed water heater. Determine the fraction of steam extracted from the turbine and the thermal efficiency of the cycle. (cengel book) o 2. Verify the validity of the last Maxwell relation for steam at 250 C and 300kPa. (cengel book) 3. Show that the internal energy of an ideal gas is a function of temperature only. 4. Steam at 20 bar, 360oC is expanded in a steam turbine to 0.08 bar. It then enters a condenser , where it is condensed to saturated liquid water. The pump feeds back the water into the boiler. (a) Assuming ideal processes , find per kg of steam the net work and the cycle efficiency. (b) If the turbine and the pump have each 80% efficiency, find the percentage reduction in the net work and cycle efficiency. (pk nag book) 3 5. A single acting two stage air compressor deals with 4 m /min of air at 1.013 bar and 15oC with a speed of 250rpm. The delivery pressure is 80 bar. Assuming complete intercooling , find the minimum power required by the compressor and the bore and stroke of the compressor. Assume a piston speed of 3m/s, mechanical efficiency of 75% and volumetric efficiency of 80% per stage. Assume the Polytropic index of compression in both the stages to be n = 1.25 and neglect clearance. (pk nag book) 6. In a single-heater regenerative cycle the steam enters the turbine at 30 bar, 400oC and the exhaust pressure is 0.10 bar. The feedwater heater is a direct-contact type which operates at 5 bar. Find (a) the efficiency and the steam rate of the cycle and (b) the increase in mean temperature of heat addition , efficiency and steam rate, as compared to the Rankine cycle (without regeneration). Neglect pump work. (R k rajput) 7. A certain chemical plant requires heat from process steam at 120oC at the rate of 5.83MJ/s and power at the rate of 1000KW from the generator terminals. Both the heat and power requirements are met by a back pressure turbine of 80% brake and 85% internal efficiency, which exhausts steam at 120oC dry saturated. All the latent heat released during condensation is utilized in the process heater. Find the pressure and temperature of steam at the inlet to the turbine. Assume 90% efficiency for the generator. 8. In a gas turbine plant, working on the Brayton cycle with a regenerator of 75% effectiveness, the air at the inlet to the compressor is at 0.1Mpa, 30oC, the pressure ratio is 6 and the maximum cycle temperature is 900oC. If the turbine & compressor have each an efficiency of 80%, find the percentage increase in the cycle efficiency due to regeneration. (pk nag book) 9. An air refrigeration open system operating between 1 MPa and 100kPa is required to produce a cooling effect of 2000KJ/min. Temparature of the air leaving the cold chamber is -5oC and at leaving the cooler is 30oC. Neglect losses and clearance in the compressor and expander. Determine (a)Mass of air circulated per minute, (b) Compressor work, expander work, cycle work, (c) COP and power in KW required. (R k rajput) 10. A Diesel engine has a compression ratio of 14 and cut-off takes place at 6% of the stroke. Find the air standard efficiency. (pk nag book)
