1. READING COMPREHENSION Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow. One of the concerns that prompted the review of the current 8 4 4 system was the heavy reliance on good performance in national examinations as an indicator of candidates ability. This problem has been most prevalent in primary schools. Many candidates are primed to believe that they are failures if they dont get top grades in the exams. Page 1 Both schools and parents are to blame but the larger share of the blame should be attached to a system that tees so many premiums on one exam at the end of eight - year cycle. Over the decades, both Public and Private schools have accepted the national ranking as indicative of their success or failure. For schools, being ranked among the top 50 nationally has become a mantra that is putting so much pressure on candidates. In fact, so intense in this pressure that over the last five years, many have become suicidal, partly due to the taunting of teachers and classmates, but also because their parents demand nothing less than the very best. Many have gone a head and killed themselves, seeing themselves as total failures because of a system that demonizes average grades. It is therefore good news that the Government is reviewing the ranking system for schools to look at factors other than just performance in KCPE. We have said it before on this page that academic excellence alone need not be the only goal of learning. Children, especially in primary school, need all round development rather than shallow academic giants. The physical and spiritual developments are just as important as the grades. Because of the heavy work load in schools many parents rarely spend time with their children who are so overburdened with home work that they never have time to just be kids and so do what all kids do, play. Research shows that child friendly schools produce candidates who are confident in their ability to succeed and who have the mental fortitude to withstand the anxiety of waiting for the result of national examinations. But what is astounding is that the tool the ministry of education intends to use for the review has been in existence since 2002. Why has it taken so long for it to be adopted? Or is the announcement to review simply a public relations exercise by the government to ward off public criticism that has grown stronger over the years of the national ranking? We hope not, since some schools, including private ones, have continued to defy the Ministrys directive against holiday tuition. And then there is the nagging, but unspoken perception that some schools are more equal than others, and so will still fail the assessment but get a top national ranking. How does the Government ensure the integrity of the process? This is key if the planned review is to win support by sector players. Regardless, however, it is a step in the right direction.
