Touch our nipple to our bab 0s lips. When our bab 0s mouth opens wide. 1uickl pull our bab in to latch#on since the mouth will be open for onl a few seconds. N1T," Bring your baby to your breast, rather than bringing your breast to your babys mouth.

2our bab will be able to breathe even though his3her nose ma press into our breast. %t is helpful in the first week to continue to support the weight of our breast throughout the nursing session. (upport our bab 0s head at the base of the neck as well. $ook for the following after our bab is latched#on: 2our bab 0s mouth should be about one inch from the tip of our nipple around the areola. 2our bab 0s lips should be turned outward against the breast. The motion of the suck is along the 4aw. not in the cheeks. 2our bab 0s ears. shoulder and hip should be in a straight line. Breastfeeding should not hurt. 2ou should feel a strong rh thmic tug on our breast. A little bit of nipple tenderness within the first minute is normal during the learning period. !owever. sore. reddened. bleeding or cracked nipples are not normal.

Breastfeeding Basics: How often should I breastfeed? Because breast milk is easil digested. our bab will probabl need to nurse more often than if he is bottle fed. 2ou will probabl breastfeed our newborn ever two to three hours for the first few weeks. 2ou might want to start out nursing for fifteen minutes on one breast and then switch our bab to the other breast for another fifteen minutes. %f he still seems hungr though. ou ma want to let him nurse longer on the second breast. 2ou should begin our ne5t nursing session with the last breast that he nursed. (ome mothers will place a safet pin on their shirt over the breast the should begin nursing with as a reminder. Breastfeeding Basics: What is colostrum? "nce our bab is born. ou will not immediatel have asuppl of breastmilk. %nstead. our breasts will produce a thick. stick . ellow substance called colostrum. This pre#milk substance is rich in antibodies. and it will sustain our bab until our milk does come in. which will happen within the ne5t twent #four to thirt #si5 hours. 2our breasts will become ver full when our milk comes in. and ou ma have to breastfeed often in the beginning. /eference"
