SPECIFIC GRAVITY DETERMINATION-Simple Guide

1. Purpose: This document is a simplified guide for technicians and laboratory workers. The following sections summarise the key elements of the test method referred to in the title of this document. For complete details refer to the referenced international specification.

2. Equipment / Calibration Check:

Pycnometer Balance. Drying Oven D 4753 110 C Graduated in a 0.5C (1.0F)

. Thermometer . . . Desiccator Entrapped Air Removal Apparatus Vacuum System

3. Procedure: a. Take a representative portion of soil of the constant mass and heat it to a temperature of 110 C b. Determine and record the mass of a clean dry pycnometer Mf. Place the Specimen and determine the mass Mo c. Soak the Specimen with distilled water for at least 12 hours

d. Remove the Entrapped Air e. Calculate the weights of the pycnometer with sample and water, with water only and empty weight

4. Calculation and expression of results:
