SPEAKER BIOS:
Michael R. Behnke, P.E., Principal Engineer, BEW Engineering. Mr. Behnke has a broad base of experience in electrical power systems which has been developed over a twenty-four year career with Pacific Gas & Electric, Kenetech Windpower, Trace Technologies, Xantrex Technology and as a co-founding principal of BEW Engineering. He has held engineering, sales, marketing, customer service and general management roles within these companies in both North America and in Europe, and has particular expertise in the area of utility interconnection and other application issues related to inverter-based distributed generation and storage technologies. He has represented present and past employers in the national and state wind and solar trade associations (AWEA, SEIA, CALSEIA, SEPA, ESA), various IEEE standards committees and working groups (including IEEE 1547) and the US TAG for IEC Technical Committee 88, which develops international wind turbine standards. He is a past chair of both the IEEE Oakland East Bay Section and the Region 6 Central Area. Mr. Behnke received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1986 and an MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University in 1993. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of California, and vice chairman of the Electrical Examination Committee with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Matthew Collins, P.E., Sr. Engineer, Protection Engineering, Southern California Edison Mr. Collins develops new and/or revised Protective Relay settings, with regards to changes, additions, or modification to the Power Delivery Systems. He coordinates the development of protective relaying schemes with Southern California Edisons Engineering Design & Construction Teams for facilitating the installation, or modifications to the Transmission System or Substation Projects. Interconnection of WDAT & Rule 21 Power Generation Facilities, i.e. SCEs GBU Peaker Projects, Wellhead Gaviota, MegaEnergy Goshen, EDOM Hill & Karen Avenue Windfarms, and American Honda, California Daries, & LACSD Puente Hills Distributed Generation Projects. He also reviews NERC Standard & Compliance concerns. Assist System Operations for locating the cause of system disturbances. Reviews if existing relay settings for determining if they are acceptable, or if changes are required, for temporary system configurations. Mr. Collins brings over 20 years of engineering experience related to power systems; experience covering planning, engineering, and operation of both generation and T&D assets. Mr. Collins received his BSEE from California State University Los Angeles, and is working towards completing his MSEE at USC. Mr. Collins is a member of IEEE. Mike Militello, President and CEO, Greenway Solar Mike has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona and a Post Graduate Degree in Education from Greenwich University in London. He has been directly involved in the design and specification of nearly 1 MW of solar systems. Previous to setting up Greenway Solar, Mike has worked as a Design Engineer, a Technical Sales Engineer, a Project Manager, and a College Lecturer. Additionally, he owned and operated an events management and audio production company in the UK for 10 years. Mike has been a long time advocate of clean renewable energy, and also a keen advocate of energy efficiency. In early 2008, following the birth of his son, Mike decided to focus his Business, Engineering and Project Management experience to solar power and formed Greenway Solar Electric, Inc. Charles Vartanian, P.E.,Chair, IEEE L.A. Area PES Chapter Charlie is Director of Market Development at A123 Systems.
