Chapter 5: Factoring

Standards:
11.0 Students apply basic factoring techniques to second-and simple third-degree polynomials. These techniques include finding a common factor for all terms in a polynomial, recognizing the difference of two squares, and recognizing perfect squares of binomials.

What is factoring?
Factoring means writing a polynomial as a product of polynomials.

5.1: The Greatest Common Factor and Factoring by Grouping

Objectives:
Within the learning period, I will be able to

Factor the greatest common factor from a polynomial. Factor by grouping.

Prepared by Jowelyn Joy Domocmat for EIS Algebra 1 Classes AY 2013-14

Definition
Greatest common factor largest quantity that is a factor of all the integers or polynomials involved.

Finding the GCF of a List of Integers or Terms

Prime factor the numbers. 2) Identify common prime factors. 3) Take the product of all common prime factors. If there are no common prime factors, GCF is 1.
1)

Opposite of distribute Review - Examples of factors:

The factors of 45 are 5 and 9

The factors of 27 are 3 and 9 The greatest common factor of 45 and 27 is 9.

Factoring by GCF
What is the greatest common factor of each pairs of monomials?

15x and 45x2

15 x = 3 5 x 45 x2 = 3 3 5 x x

The GCF of 15x and 45 x2 is 15x

-7a2b2 and -3ab?

-7a2b2 = -7 a a b b -3ab = -3 a b

The GCF of -7a2b2 and -3ab is ab

Guided Practice: Problem Set 5.1

Factor the following by taking out the greatest common factor.
5. 4x 8y
4(x 2y) 3(x2 2x 3) 13a2 (1 2a)

7. 3x2 6x 9
15. 13a2 26a3

21. 7x3 + 21x2 28x

7x (x2 + 3x 4)

33. 12x2y3 72x5y3 36x4y4 12x2y3 (1 6x3 3x2y)

Factoring by Grouping
When does it work? Always

When should I use it? For any polynomial but especially when you have 4 or more terms.

Example:
1.) 6x3 9x2 + 4x - 6 (6x3 9x2) + (4x 6) 3x2(2x 3) + 2(2x 3)

( 3x2 + 2) (2x 3)

Guided Practice: Problem Set 5.1

Factor by grouping. 35. xy + 5x + 3y + 15
(xy + 5x) + (3y + 15) x(y + 5) + 3(y + 5) (x + 3) (y + 5) (ab + 7a) - (3b + 21) a(b + 7) - 3(b + 7) (a - 3) (b + 7) (2ax + 6x) - (5a + 15) 2x(a + 3) - 5(a + 3) (2x - 5) (a + 3)

39. ab + 7a 3b - 21

43. 2ax + 6x 5a - 15

51. ax + ay + bx + by + cx + cy (ax + bx + cx) + (ay + by + cy)

x(a + b + c) + y(a + b + c) (x + y) (a + b + c)
