LEARNING EXPERIENCE A. Review on the previous lesson. What is the first part of the Mass all about?

B. Life Situation

Present the story entitled SERVING GOD. Marge went to her mail box and there was only one letter.

She picked it up and looked at it before opening, but then she looked at the envelope again. There was no stamp, no postmark, only her name and address. She read the letter: Dear Marge: Im going to be in your neighborhood Saturday afternoon and I'd like to stop by for a visit. Love Always, God Her hands were shaking as she placed the letter on the table. "Why would the Lord want to visit me? I'm nobody special. I don't have anything to offer." With that thought, Marge remembered her empty kitchen cabinets. "Oh my goodness, I really don't have anything to offer. I'll have to run down to the store and buy something for dinner." She reached for her purse and counted out its contents. Five dollars and forty cents. "Well, I can get some bread and cold cuts, at least." She threw on her coat and hurried out the door.

A loaf of French bread, a half-pound of sliced turkey, and a carton of milk leaving Marge with grand total twelve cents to last her until Monday. Nonetheless, she felt good as she headed home, her meager "Hey offerings lady, can tucked you under help her us, arm. lady?"

Marge had been so absorbed in her dinner plans; she hadn't even noticed two figures huddled in the alleyway. A man and a woman, both of them dressed in little more than rags.

"Look lady, I ain't got a job, ya know, and my wife and I have been living out here on the street, and, well, now it's getting cold and we're getting kinda hungry and, well, if you could help us. Lady, we'd really appreciate it."

Marge looked at them both. They were dirty, they smelled bad and frankly, she was certain that they could get some kind of work if they really wanted to. "Sir, I'd like to help you, but I'm a poor woman myself. All I have is a few cold cuts and some bread, and I'm having an important guest for dinner tonight and I was planning on serving that "Yeah, well, okay lady, I to understand. Thanks Him." anyway."

The man put his arm around the woman's shoulders, turned and

headed back into the alley. As she watched them leave, Marge felt a familiar twinge in her heart.

"Sir, wait!" The couple stopped and turned as she ran down the alley after them. "Look, why don't you take this food. I'll figure out something else to serve my guest." She handed the man her grocery bag.

"Thank you lady. Thank you very much!" "Yes, thank you!" It was the man's wife, and Marge could see now that she was shivering. "You know, I've got another coat at home. Here, why don't you take this one." Marge unbuttoned her jacket and slipped it over the woman's shoulders. Then smiling, she turned and walked back to the street without her coat and with nothing to serve her guest. "Thank you lady! Thank you very much!"

Marge was chilled by the time she reached her front door, and worried too. The Lord was coming to visit and she didn't have anything to offer Him. She fumbled through her purse for the door key. But as she did, she noticed another envelope in her mailbox. "That's odd. The mailman doesn't usually come twice in one day." She took the envelope out of the box and opened it. Dear Marge: It was so good to see you again. Thank you for the lovely meal. And thank you, too, for the beautiful coat. Love Always, God The air was still cold, but even without her coat, Marge no longer noticed. Ask the pupils what they have learned in the story. Ask them on how they could show their love and how they could serve the Lord. Let them share on what is their own meaning of Eucharist in their life.

C. Discussion Present and discuss the order of the parts of the mass with a brief explanation of each part. F. Homily- the priest explains and applies the message of the Gospel to the needs of the congregation. G. Profession of Faith- The congregation proclaims its faith in God through the Apostles Creed, handed down from the early Church; said on Sundays and special feast days.

H. General Intercessions or Prayers of the Faithful- The congregation, as a united priestly people, prays for the needs of the Church and the world. III. Liturgy of the Eucharist The second major part of the Mass, Liturgy of the Eucharist, begins with the preparation of the gifts and ends before the concluding rite. It is the heart of the entire liturgical celebration. The word "Eucharist" means "thanksgiving." Hence, in the second part, we thank God for the whole work of reconciliation and salvation. A. Preparation 1. Preparation of the Altar and the Gifts (Offertory) - The priest leads the people in making their offering of bread and wine and of themselves. 2. Prayer Over the Gifts- The priest, speaking in the name of all present, asks the Father to bless and accept the gifts. B. Introduction 1. Preface- With the priest, the people raise their hearts to God and address the Father through Jesus Christ. 2. Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) - The priest and the people acclaim God in biblical terms. C. Eucharistic Prayer- This is the central prayer of the Mass. It includes an opening prayer, an invocation of the Holy Spirit, the consecration prayer in which the priest prays for the Gospel narrative of Jesus at the Last Supper, followed by a series of prayers concluding with the great doxology. There are four different Eucharistic prayers from which the priest chooses one. We present here only a brief outline. 1. Opening Prayer- praise to the Father 2. Invocation of the Holy Spirit And so, Father, we bring You these gifts. We ask You to make them holy by the power of Your Spirit That they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate this Eucharist. 3. Consecration On the night he was betrayed, he took bread and gave Yiu thanks and praise. He broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take this, all of you, and eat it: This is my body which will be given up for you.

When the supper was ended, he took the cup. Again he gave You thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples, and said: Take this, all of you, and drink from it: This is the cup of my blood, The blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all men So that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.
