LIFE IS A JOURNEY.

From conception to the funeral reception, it is a long, rocky, winding

road. It has peaks and valleys, potholes and alleys, gutters and crumbling curbs. It takes a special breed to navigate this treacherous terrain, to walk this walk, to make inroads without getting sidetracked. If this book has found its way into your calloused hands, chances are you are one of these rare few. To you, the word journey has a special meaning. It signifies a life spent in pursuit of an iron ideal. Bent barbells encrusted with chalk, bleeding shins scabbed a hundred times over, tattered lifting straps on the verge of tear, all commonplace in your world. Though you stand apart amongst the rank and file, you are not alone. Yours is not a journey all that different from that which Wrath traversed in the monthly spotlight of the bodybuilding mags, not unlike those voyages chronicled by your brethren on the F O R V M each day. But while you do have brothers in the struggle, your particular journey is very much your own. It always has been Within the pages of this very book lies your goals accomplished In these paper leaves, your future waits. The next year of the road is laid out before you, waiting for you to take the first step. A day at a time, a meal at a time, a workout at a timeeach set and rep as valuable as the next, each calorie and nutrient as important as the last. Here you will chart it all, mapping out this undiscovered territory as you go. The time has come for accountability, the day has arrived to begin your great quest. The dusty solitude of the gym beckons, your destiny awaits. This is your journey.

Go Hard by G Diesel
As I rose standing stationary aboard the cattle chute escalator out of the bowels of Penn Station, I gritted my teeth, my jowl muscle flexing hard under my bearded cheek. Having just completed my cramped quarters commute with the rest of the hustlers and bustlers, I observed the landmark train station decked out with Christmas regalia and I felt nothing. Golden bells, metallic bulbs and boughs of holly designed to push those familiar sentimental buttons Quaint, Yule jingles streaming through the old public address speakers preying upon memories--the romantic flame of which has long since been extinguished. Sure I was once a kid and I felt that flutter this time of year, but though the neatly wrapped boxes under the tree were nice, even as a child it meant something more--that familial warmth, that idealized sense of a mankind that was kind to its fellow man That warm, fuzzy bullshit tough guys like us arent so comfortable openly acknowledging. The notions of which take a piece of you with them, when they, like everything else pure and good, inevitably die. It is indeed a dark day when a man must come to grips with the fact that so many of the small joys of life are a lie. Lies that have nothing to do with friends or family, nothing to do with the birth of a cultural revolution twenty plus centuries ago. Materialized, marketing figments designed to alter our value system and grift us out of our last buck. Grown men competing to see who can outspend who, compensating for their little dicks by uprooting the biggest of the mighty pines and then letting that majestic tree die slowly in their living rooms on display for the entire neighborhood to see. It all seems so important, it all seems of such great consequence, but in reality, it all means nothing. Truth is, it is a cold, cold world. Colder than the winter wind off of the Atlantic. It is dog eat dog, look out for number one and every other clich you can think of to signify the fact that you are on your motherfuckin own. It is harsh out there and if you arent willing to go hard, to go all in and to do everything it takes to get yours and to ensure your own survival, this world will eat you up and shit you out. Dont laugh It has ripped to shreds a whole army of motherfuckers ten times tougher than your punk ass. Go hard and guard whats yours with your life. Build that ruddy and weathered muscle, that scarred and calloused outer shell to protect your soft spots. Temper your emotions and never show your hand. Come to grips with the lonely and solemn existence that is your daily life when stripped of all of its pomp and artifice. I wish I could be more pie in the sky, more sunshine and happiness, but there is a weighty sense of duty with which I must address you. Honesty is the cross I must bear, spitting the awful truth here when Id much rather spin a tale of love and light. In illustration of these earlier points, I will share with you a story of recent loss. Last week, a new friend and associate of mine, a close friend of one of my oldest comrades, a brother in our lifestyle, took his own life. Pushed to a point of despair and hopelessness, lost and scared, he drove to the top of a casino parking garage in Atlantic City and leapt to his demise. As he was driven to that point, working contrary to the most basic human instinct for self preservation, standing on the edge, seeking to make the pain stop, I can only imagine what ran through his panicked mind. How alone he must have felt, looking at the cold concrete so many stories below and seeing relief there, an escape, as he swayed in the cold December breeze. I shudder when I ponder his loneliness, imagining that it could only be trumped by that of his infant daughter, some distant day, so many years from now when shes old enough to understand. My friend Josh will be missed and while our mourning wont bring him back, while his familys pain can never be relieved and his vast potential can never be fulfilled, I have to believe that he didnt die in vain this holiday season. That this waste of a promising life cant possibly be for naught, that his passing was meant to happen for a reasonfor a much needed dose of perspective to the many of us apt to pity ourselves and to grow bitter, failing to see the promise with the blessing that is each day were lucky enough to open our eyes. Life can be a motherfucker, but fuck it; its all weve got. As our days dwindle away more quickly than we realize, hold onto your ideals and fight the good fight. Fight because you can, because life is worth fighting for, fight because though guys like Josh can fight no more, you wont let them lose. I implore you to go hard in everything you do At work, at home, in the gym and anywhere else you pursue your dreams. Love those you love as if youll never see them again. Let them know that theyre treasured and dear, that even in this cold, cynical and cutthroat world, youll never let them be alone. Go hard for those that cant motivate themselves, those that have lost hope and given in. Let your struggle and strain be an example to those that cant afford the luxury of optimism, that while youre neck deep in the same shit that has broken others stronger than you, that you refuse to be broken That you refuse to give in That you wont quit this life til this life quits you. Go hard for those that can go no more. Go hard And while youre at it, be happy.

21 YOUR JOURNEY LOGS & NOTES

You Are Your Maker by The House

The road to my IFBB pro card has been tough. Driven by desire and with my eyes set on one goal for the past three years, I was my maker and I made my first step across the many stepping stones that drew my final blueprint. When I started bodybuilding three short years ago, I had it set in my mind to achieve the status of being a pro. I am a very goal-oriented person and when I set out to do something I do it, I make it happen... I find a way. In all of our tasks, there will always be ups and downs. It's what you do when you are down that makes a champion. Like I always say if it was easy then we all would do it, but bodybuilding is not easy it is the toughest sport I have every encountered. I respect anyone who goes out and gives it one hundred percent and does a show no matter what place they get, because it is more than thatit is a matter of finishing what you set out to do. My bodybuilding career started after I was done playing college football. I am a very competitive person and needed to find something to fill that gap since football was gone. Yes, I trained hard as a football player, but I had no idea what bodybuilding was really about. Over the past three years I have learned a lot and know the two training types are very different. I feel that playing football and track all my life did help me build the foundation to this House and sped the process up when I started bodybuilding full time. When I started training for my first show I was very naive and had no idea what to expect or where to start. The first thing I did was ask around and try to soak up as much info as I could from the local gyms and gym rats. You know people say sometimes the best advice is free. Well, I can tell you this is not always true. I guess it could be but not from my area. See where I am from there are not many people that know much about the game. Knowing that when I do something I always do it 100%, I knew that I was going to need someone to guide me and show me how this game works. That is when I found my boy Andy. Andy took me under his wing from day one and helped me build the The House, take me to the next level. Remember, you might be on stage by yourself but it is who you got in your corner that makes it all happen. When I started my contest diet for my first show I had no idea how much weight I was going to lose. I was a big bad football player and ate everything I could get my hands on. I was not fatI was just big. I played fullback and my weight was 240 so you know I thought well I might get down to 210 or 205 and I would be ready for the stage. That is when I got a reality check. I had no clue what the times were going to bring. My first show opened my eyes and made me realize that bodybuilding was no joke. This was all work and if you wanted to do this it is a 24/7 lifestyle change. It was not like football where once you left practice it was done because bodybuilding is a round-theclock job. After all my dieting and prep was done for my first show it was one of the most satisfying feelings I had ever had. It did not matter on that day how I placed or what happened, all I knew is that I did it. I did what I said I was going to do. I was my maker. At that show the outcome was goodI won the junior division, placed in the top three in the novice and in the top five in the open light heavyweight. For my first time out I was very excited. This was good but I put more fuel on the fire and it gave me more motivation to get even better. My second show was six months later. I was bigger and in better shape. All I wanted to do was get better each show and I did that during the next six months. During those six months I knew what I

needed to do to get better and I did it. This is my goal each show, always take one step forward, move up the ladder. At this show I won the novice and placed second in the open heavyweight class. Yes I did better but I still improve and I knew this would only motivate me in that way. Now that Andy and I knew my body better we decided to wait one year and do the same show again next year and our goal was to win the open class. During this year I knew I needed to improve my upper body. My legs were big. I just had to let things catch up to them. So I changed my training and put a good solid eight months in before I started to cut down for this third show, where I knew I was going to have to bring my "A" game. During this off season I gained as much weight as I could so I could put some quality size on. I feel that early in your bodybuilding career it is a good thing to do because you need to grow, but the farther you get in your career I have found it is better to stay in better shape so the dieting is easier on the body. This third show was a big show and the competition was good. At the end of the night I knew I was at my best and I knew I did everything that I could have done at this point. I knew I was ready, so it was game on. At this show I won the open heavyweight class and won the overall. It was a great feeling, but I knew I was not going to stop there. After winning the overall title this qualified me for national level shows. I knew it was time. Time to take it to the bigger stage. My next show was the North Americans in 2006 which was less than a year away after qualifying. I knew that it was not going to be an easy task but, this is what made me want to do it. I knew that it would only make me better. Because the harder the competition was, the better I got. Doing a national level show was an eye opener to me. All the competition was good. Everyone was a winner. We all won local shows and there were guys that had been in the game for years all trying to get that card. So it was a fight. Everyone was on their game and at this level it comes down to way more than big arms or big legs, it comes down to your total package. When I stepped on stage at this show I did not know what hit me it went so fast. I felt like my head was spinning. It was all a blur. I placed fourth in the heavyweight class which was a great accomplishment for my first national level show, but I had different plans. I want to win... I knew I could win. Doing this show and placing fourth gave me a fire inside and gave me a different mindset and was the best thing that could have ever happened. I was motivated by failure, not that placing fourth was a failure, but anything less than a card was failure at this point. After this show I knew I had to step it up even more. I had to take my body beyond what it had every done before. I took about four weeks off from training. After this show my body was shot and I knew I had a long road ahead if I was going to do what I had to do to win. I had in my mind to do the big three this year: the USAs, North Americans and Nationals. As I was training down for the USAs at one week out my corner men told me not to do the showthat my conditioning was not right, that I was not where I needed to be. This was the one of the hardest thing for me to do since I am a very competitive person. But at the same time it was the best thing that I could have ever done. Not doing this show opened my eyes and rocked my world. I had five weeks to dial it in and do the North Americans. The next five weeks were the hardest weeks of training I had ever had. I busted my ass day in and day out to dial my conditioning in. I left no stone unturned. I did everything I could and gave it all I had. Knowing that I would not let this ever happen to me again. I was my maker, my fucking maker. I made myself dial it in. I was one with my body and I willed it to get ripped. I did not just do

the exercises and the cardio I lived every rep and step of it. Knowing it would all pay off in the end. As I got closer to the show I was very in tune with my body. I could feel every change and feel every muscle fiber in my body. This is how I knew I was finally getting to a new level of knowing my body. This is the first time I could actually will my body to change. At a week out from the 2007 North Americans I knew I was going to be the best that I could possibly be at this point in my career. I did all that I could do. I was ready. I was very confident and knew that it was mine. I could taste that pro card. All I had to do was dry out and put on the final touches. At the show, when I was in the pump up area, I knew I had it. I could just feel it. All eyes were on me. I had the confidence in my eyes and was playing mind games with my competitors. As they were pumping up I just sat there with my Animal Gear on all covered up while they were all posing waiting to see me start to get ready. It does not take me long to pump up. All I had to do is take my Animal Gear off and I was ready. About 15 minutes before I would take the stage I would start to get ready. I stood up and pulled off my sweats and it was lights out. It was over right there. Game, set, match. In my eyes I already had it. All I had to do was do what I do best and it was mine. As I walked out on stage for my quarter turns, I felt like a million bucks. Everything was falling into place just like the blueprints said. I hit all of them just like I had done thousands of times at home with my son, X. Then the sixty second round. I hit all my poses and did not stumble. As I walked off stage I was getting better and better. Now for the callouts. I was right in the middle on the first call outs. Right where you want to be, all eyes on me. I was standing tall and I knew no one could touch me on this day. I hit all the poses the judges called out just like I was at home in my living room. After that I knew it was mine. I did what I needed to do. It was out of my hands. I went back to my room and was on cloud nine. I carbed up for the night show and I was ready. When I came out for my ninety second routine all of my family, friends and fans gave me the energy I needed to put on a good show. This was one of the best feelings I have ever had on stage. Hearing all my supporters yelling for me when they brought the top five out on stage and they announced I won my class, my heart dropped. I knew that I was almost there and I had one more step to go. I needed to get that overall so I would earn my pro status. After all the classes were over and they took us out on stage for the overall, I knew I could do it. I felt I was in better condition than anyone up on stage. I had a good overall package with good conditioning. We posed down and I had a good feeling. As I stood there waiting for the decision, I was numb. It seemed to take forever. When they finally called my name for the overall title I was ready and I knew this was only a new beginning for more to come, another step up the ladder, a step closer to what I desire. Another challenge to become my maker. To get better and to throw more fuel on my fire. For I am my maker and this is only the start of a new road. A road that I will pave and a road that will have ups and downs but in the end all comes back to the same principleI am responsible for what I ultimately achieve. I am my maker. I just wanted to thank everyone that was in my corner, my wife, my son, my family, Andy, and my fans. Also Animal for helping me get to the next level and for the future we have together in the IFBB. Also the NPC for giving all of us athletes the chance to compete in a safe and professional atmosphere year in and out. Oh yeah, and a special thanks goes to all of my brothers on the Animal forum, the FORVM.

29 YOUR JOURNEY LOGS & NOTES

Win Or Lose by Ox
You win, you win. You lose, you still win. - Joey LaMotta in Raging Bull I can remember the first time I gave serious thought to competing. I was training in a gym in my hometown and there was this new guy who I started seeing more and more. There were a lot of people in the gym and, to be perfectly honest with you, I only took notice of two types of people. The first was the guy who both looked and trained like an Animal. The second was the guy you couldnt help but notice because he was so incapable of performing an exercise correctly. You had to stand by in bewilderment and ask yourself what fuckin muscle group the guy was actually trying to train. Anyway, this new guy happened to be a monster. He was about 6 foot, 280 lbs and had a back so wide that his lats just hung there like as if you just nailed two big slabs of meat to his sides. I could tell he took notice of me cause I would see him looking at me through overlapping mirrors. I have to admit, I usually couldnt give a shit what someone else is doing but when you see someone this big, you subconsciously try and take some notes. One day I got to the gym and he was just sitting in the front. I assumed he was waiting for the guy he usually trained with and so I asked him where his buddy was. He replied, I dont know. This motherfucker is always late. I always trained alone. The feeling, even the thought, of someone slowing me down drives me nuts. I can be pretty damn impatient. But lookin at this dude I didnt ever get the feeling it would be a problem. Whadaya got today? I asked. He replied, Arms. Wanna train? So we did. We didnt talk much. I pretty much lead the workout and he followed. We both trained harder than I think we were used to for fear that one of us would think the other was soft. Drop sets, super sets, and some heavy ass weight. You name it. Once we finished, I was sucking down a shake and we were bullshitting. He asked me if I had ever competed. I told him I hadnt but that I always wanted to. Yeah, I busted my ass in the gym everyday, never partied, ate strict as shit, and made it my mission to get nine hours of sleep every night. I lived my life like I was getting ready for a show. I just had no fuckin clue how to actually do it. He told me that if I looked the way I did, I knew a hell of a lot more than I thought I knew. In any case, we decided to train together. What about your partner? I asked. Who? was all he said. We trained together for a couple of months. It was the first time in my life that I had ever trained with someone on a regular basis. On top of that, I had never trained with someone who was as strong as me and, in some areas, stronger. What drove me on? I wanted to kill his strength with my intensity. I never saw myself as a competitive person and when I trained with Ron I did not try to outdo him. Rather, I think that having someone there made me more aware of the fact that, unchecked, there was the possibility that I had become complacent or less driven. Training next to someone else makes you more aware of yourself. It was time for me to progress. And I did. We did. I think that in those couple months I made more progress than in the whole year prior.

You know, you need to do a show. Yeah that sounded fine and dandy but I didnt think I was ready. Youre definitely ready, he said. Okay I said to him. I told him even if I wanted to do it, I didnt know what show or when or how to go about it. I was someone who never had a bodybuilding magazine subscription in his life, had never gone to a bodybuilding show, and didnt own a single training DVD or video. The Bev Francis Atlantic States is the show for you, he answered. Yeah okay, whatever the fuck that is. Sounds great. Its an NPC show in early June so youll have 10 weeks to diet. I didnt know what NPC meant. I didnt know shit really. All I knew was that I had spent a lot of hours in the gym and had made a lot of progress over the years and just wanted to pull it together and see how I looked. So, I started dieting ten weeks out. June 4, 2005 was the date of the show. I put together a diet based on how I had dieted in the past. It was conventional; six meals a day, high protein, low carb, low fat. I did cardio a couple times a week for the first couple of weeks and then bumped it up accordingly. Anyways, that isnt what this is about. The diet and training were coming together and I was four weeks out from the show. A friend of mine brought me up to meet the owners of the Golds Gym in New Haven, Connecticut, and told me that I had to train at their gym because it pissed on all the other gyms in the area. He was right. The place was great. Dumbbells to 200 lb, 5 squat racks, 2 donkey calf raises, tons of 100 lb plates, and a whole bunch of that good equipment from the late 1980s and early 1990s. All that plus the three Italian brothers who owned the place, love bodybuilding, and let me know from day one that it was my gym to train at whenever I wanted to and to do whatever the hell I wanted. I remember Jerry saying to me, Ox, if you wanna break shit, break it. If you wanna hang from the ceiling, I dont give a shit. You can scream, walk around with your shirt off, whatever you wanna do you do. I liked that. That made me feel good. Kenny, one of the trainers there, offered to help me with my posing. It was a good thing because I knew nothing about it and this guy was a genius. I had plans one Saturday afternoon to work with Kenny on posing. I remember the day perfectly. I was training calves and hamstrings. I told my cousin, who I hadnt seen in a while, to come by the gym and check me out. I was doing some stiff legs when he walked over to me. He just stood there and smiled and when I racked the weight he goes, Dude, you look sick. He started going into all this shit about how I was gonna win the show, was gonna blow people away, was gonna be a pro bodybuilder one day He went on and on. I got a lot of the same from friends and the guys at the gym. Do I love all these guys for the support they gave me and the fact that they believed in me? Youre damn right. To this day, it means a lot to me. But I wasnt really hearing what they were saying. Theres something you gotta understand and it is the reason Im writing this. I did all this for me. I didnt decide to do a competition to win. I didnt give a fuck about winning. I wanted to get up on stage and look sick. I wanted to shock the shit out of people. I wanted to look back on photos from the show and say to myself, Fuck yeah thats me. I wanted a feeling a satisfaction. I wanted all the time I spent in the gym and the nights I stayed home while my friends were out getting hammered and all the other things I sacrificed to look that way, to scream out from the photos. I wanted proof of my dedication, hard work, and sacrifice. Thats it. For that, I didnt need to win. A lot has happened since my first show. Its only been a couple of years but fortunately, theyve been very productive. Lately, since Ive been on the boards and have been getting emails from people and so on. I hear a lot of people talking about winning. My friends want to win their shows. Whos gonna win the Olympia? Will I win as a pro? I must admit, when winning begins to have some serious rewards attached to it, it becomes increasingly difficult to tell yourself that winning means nothing. Im not gonna bullshit anybody. You bet your ass it feels good to win. I feel better. People are a little bit nicer to you. Shit, even the food tastes better after winning. All that and I still insist on saying, Fuck it. Winning still doesnt make you. Youre not the placing on your trophy. You are the trophy. Youre the product. Im in it for me. Im in it for what matters. I have my own goals and priorities. I know a few people who are considered champions but dont mean shit to me. Aside from winning, they never did anything for anyone. They certainly never did anything for the sport of bodybuilding, let alone anything mentionable outside of the sport. I never made winning my focus and I refuse to start now. I was a bodybuilder before I ever competed. Its who I am. With or without anyones approval its who Ill always be. Win or lose, its not gonna make or break me. I live by my own standards. Its just me against me.

The Implements Of My Salvation by Machine

That great collection of tests and scars and experiences which follows you through the corridors of time is no less important than the very blood in your veins. We are so very fragile in spite of our inflated sense of confidence and strength and we occupy no more than the flutter of a sparrow's wings as a measure of our own time here. I have sat and thought and I have accepted my pale place of humility and humanity in the universe. I have become aware all at once, as I gaze at the rigid outline of a mountain of stone, I am nothing. I know that the mountain will outlast me, outlive me, and out-philosophize me. I am more than humbled by its sharp outline that seems to cut into the sky angrily. It is with that humility that I now ponder my own rigid outline. I am composed of flesh and bone and draped in muscle. I am cumbersome and not without considerable stature. The fact that I am alive for only one millionth of the time that a mountain is, lends significant weight to my feeling of quiet desperation. Strong is not sufficiently descriptive of the monstrous and stoic image this piece of rock displays. My thoughts wander to seemingly unreachable summits. Many men have taken the best shots a mountain has to dish out and lived. I wonder if these men believed that they had beaten the mountain. No one worth his salt is ever fool enough to believe he has beaten the mountain. For, in all their sophomoric hubris, whatever actions men take, or do not take, the mountain remains. The mountain is a parallel entity to the weights of iron I have grasped for many years of my life. As I said here, no man worth his salt is fool enough to think he has beaten the weights, nor will any man ever beat them. I have been asked many times, and have heard it said even more that the weights are killing me. I feel just the opposite. They are delivering me. They are cleansing my soul. The weights offer me a vehicle to stretch out my humanity and test my own primal limits. I think maybe the men who ascend these giant rocks into the heavens, must use the mountain to bring them as close to their own humanity as they will ever be, while they are still alive. Just as I must use the iron to become one with my own humanity as I carve out my place in this world. They must also use the mountain that tears the flesh from their palms. The mountain whose sheer height forces men to breathe air that feels like fire through half crushed lungs. The mountain that cloaks men in deadly cold until their very bones threaten to break. These men also use this mountain to pull themselves as far away from their own humanity as their mortality will allow them to. Again, I draw parallels to the steel that rips the flesh from my palms. The fiery, hot breath that enters my pressure compacted lungs in the 110 degree weight room as I stand with impossibly huge amounts of weight across my shoulders and the sheer height of the poundages and pressures that break the blood vessels in my eyes and deafens me for hours afterward. These are the elements that I use to pull myself as far away from my own humanity as my own mortality will allow. In my own sophomoric hubris, I once believed I could beat the mountain, or in my case, the weight. I thought that each new summit I reached would cement my victorious path to some final, seemingly unattainable mountain top, where I could plant my flag and scream at God. Over time, I realized that the weights are not mine to beat. I realized that the implement of my salvation was worth so much more than some image of finality I conjured up in my mind. The implements of my salvation are weights of iron and I know that what ever action I take, or do not take, those weights of iron will remain. I must use these implements of salvation to separate me from my own humanity. I must use them to beat myself bruised and bloody for it is only through my desperation and pain that I may ever know true deliverance. There is only action or lack of action. I am like the iron, I cannot be beaten. Though I will not out last the mountain or the metal, I must endeavor to remain unbeaten in my mind and in my soul. I must walk out in the borderlands with the other madmen. In between this world and the next. waiting to be delivered. Waiting for a good death to find me and relishing in every moment that my hands hold the implements of my salvationiron.

45 YOUR JOURNEY LOGS & NOTES

The Powerbuilding Precepts by G Diesel

If Ive said it once, Ive said it a million times. Id never want to be the big guy who was weak, nor would I want to be the strong lifter with no physique. One in the absence of the other is, to me, empty. Be as strong as you look and as big as the weights you can move That is the powerbuilding mandate. A weight training athlete, especially one not using illicit anabolics, must literally will his body to grow. The body is preprogrammed to maintain a certain homeostatic size. To counter this inborn inclination, one must place their body under such stress and make such a consistent demand that the accumulation of lean mass is determined to be a critical component of survival. The any means necessary in the process of creating a guerilla gorilla out of a mere mortal man is the impetus behind this article. As red blooded post-millennial alpha males, too often we walk around with much pent up aggression The sort of bottled up piss and vinegar that can generally do more harm than good, unless channeled properly. Years back, my boy Machine characterized what we do as an alternative to needlepoint. As a means of extracting productivity from angst and rage, Id term my exploits in the gym as an alternative to big game hunting or a less criminal substitute for beating the hell out of your neighbor. Pacifism is far easier an ethos to champion when you empty the dark, simmering cess pool of your soul, leaving a daily puddle on the gym floor. Here are some lessons Ive learned over the years, principles to ensure progress, behold The Powerbuilding Precepts Diversify Your Portfolio Every exercise works, every rep range works, every training philosophy works. While the human body is an amazingly intricate and adaptive machine, the process of building muscle is a simple one. Overload your muscles in a targeted, strenuous and unique fashion and then feed and rest enough to optimize the growth response. For the sake of this argument, I pose that muscle tissue is sublime in its stupidity. Where the mind can turn chocolate pudding into nuclear fission, muscle grows and adaptsplain and simple. The tiny filaments threaded through a red or white muscle fiber dont know Doggcrapp from dog shit, they dont know heavy duty training from heavy metal music. They know fatigue and pain, they know rest and recovery. Utilize this vast available arsenal to the best of your ability. Dont let any apparatus in your gym collect dust. Let go of the ethos youre married to and fucking train hard. Supersets, drop sets, circuits. Barbells, dumbbells, machines and cables. Singles, doubles, 50 rep sets. It all fucking works and it works well, but none of it works forever. Tax your muscles, train heavy, test your endurance and call it a fucking day. Be efficient, be thorough and be open-minded. In this sense, powerbuilding is the anti-philosophy of training. The only style of training Im loyal to is hard training. The only system I pledge allegiance to is the one that will help me grow today. Structural Integrity Support gear exists for a reason. That reason, is that contrary to popular opinion, we are not, in fact, bulletproof. Im sprinting toward my third decade on this planet and Im more than 12 years deep in this game. I dont miss workouts, so you do the fucking math. Train your fucking ass off long enough and train around enough injuries and youll discover the need for a little help. This is not an excuse to be the genius walking on the treadmill with his belt and gloves, but here is how and where I employ the use of the necessary support gear. On back and legs, for my heaviest compound movements I use my belt. Ill also break it out for often overlooked classics like the standing military press. The only other gear I use regularly are my wrist wraps. I use my 24 wrist wraps on all heavy pressing movements for chest and delts as well as for most of my arm training. Wake up enough mornings with your joints feeling like you were run over by a cement truck and youll see the light. Let my pain save you some of your own. Live to Fight Another Day The only training session that is as important to me as the one Im in the midst of is my next one. Consistency and the ability to string together weeks, months and years of meaningful workouts is the absolute most important element in surpassing your limitations and leaving your peers in the dust. In this sense youve gotta train intelligently. It is a clich, but listen to your body. Know the difference between half stepping it and playing it smart. There is no excuse for a lack of effort, but caution is preferable to rash bravery. Train around injuries, alternate high rep weeks with the sessions where you max out. My ego is responsible for the man I am today, but I do check my pride. Pride will get a motherfucker hurt. Where the average onlooker is concerned with how much Im lifting today, Im preoccupied with how much Im lifting tomorrow. Where the next guy is comparing himself to me, Im comparing myself now to where Ill be next week. Bigger than yesterday, smaller than tomorrow. Always. Believe that. Heavy is Relative 225, 315, 405 whatever. Yeah these benchmark digits come to mean a lot to us, the few warriors in this arena. They are, however, just numbers. Im guilty of that shit too, waiting for somebody to powder my nuts cuz I did 20 reps of whatever the fuck on the bench. Big fucking deal. It is all relative. Heavy training is critical to the growth of thick, dense, enduring muscle. But heavy training for you, heavy training for me, heavy training for Sam Byrd and heavy training for your uncle Ned aint all the same thing in terms of numbers. However, it is exactly the same from an experiential perspective. The real shit, the shit that makes you grow hurts. No way around that. It is scary. It gives you the cold sweats. It strains your organs, making you feel like your guts are gonna leak outta your butthole or your brains are gonna stream outta your nose. If youre benching 500 lbs and it doesnt make you feel like youre gonna die, guess what playboy? You aint training heavy. Just a few more verses from the gutter for my boys to ponder. Do with them as you please, but by all means use them for good and not evil. There are a whole lotta scandalous, shady, motherfuckers in this game looking to take what we live for and turn a profit from our blood, sweat and tears Looking to lead the youth astray and sell them a pipe dream. Not on our watch. Not while Im here. Were here to illuminate the path blazed for us long ago, to set an example. To show the way. To do what is right, even though what is right is rarely easy. When I speak to you of our challenge, I reference larger concepts and write in grandiose terms worthy of the greatest journey and the most epic struggle. Because after all, we do what we do because we must. We do what we do to survive. The rest of the world just lifts fucking weights

53 YOUR JOURNEY LOGS & NOTES

Play Your Own Game by Ox

I was at the gym the other day and had just finished training legs. Ive been killin it lately in the gym when it comes to leg training8-10 sets of squats, walking lunges, hacks, and some extensions thrown in there for good measure. Not like I need to tell you but when the end of my workout comes, aside from thanking God that my legs are done for another week, I look forward to sitting my ass down for a minute and letting my stomach contents that had been trying to come up, go back down. So I was sittin there and happened to glance over and notice a bodybuilding mag from 2001. Instinctively I reached over and opened it up. Holy shit the guys were different. Im talking about Levrone, Dorian, Flex and even the younger Ronnie and Jay. The guys looked awesome. In my opinion, these are some of the best physiques of all-time. Paul Demayo, Mike Matarazzo, Lee Labrada--the list goes on and on. What I notice, when I look back on the pics of guys from the late eighties and into the nineties, is the variety. I feel like everyone was very unique. Each guy brought something different. Think about it. What do Paul Demayo, Kevin Levrone, and Lee Labrada have in common? Its not a trick question. The three dont have shit in common except they have three of the most kick ass physiques of all time. Its not like comparing Ronnie and Jay. Comparing the guys Ive mentioned would be like, as Ronnie might in fact say, comparing apples and oranges. I look at the top ten bodybuilders in the world right now and while I can respect them, admire them, and look at them in awe, there is not one of them who I would want to look like. In the gym, where I was sitting was a bulletin board with posters of all of the upcoming pro and amateur shows. 2001 bodybuilding mag in hand, I remember looking up at the bulletin board and the posters for the pro shows on it and going back and forth. My head must have turned back and forth a half dozen times. What the fuck? Why do the guys of the past look so much more impressive? Who gives a shit? I do. I think about shit like this because its important to me as both a bodybuilder and an individual. So whats the reason for the difference in the physiques of the guys between yesterday and today? Wait a minute. First of all what is the difference or, perhaps more appropriately, what are the differences? When I see a lineup of past bodybuilders the main thing I notice is that the guys all look different. I feel like the physiques are more unique, more dramatic, and more appealing. Shawn Ray had a dramatic physique. Flex Wheeler and Kevin Levrone are arguably the two best bodybuilders to never be crowned Mr. Olympia. Dorian looked like he was carved out of granite. Flex was a work of art. Mike Matarazzo was a fan favorite. The list goes on and on. What I see when I look back at the physiques from ten to fifteen years ago is men who looked like men. I dont see men onstage who look like theyre nine months pregnant. I see tight waistlines. I see crisp lines and dramatic muscle development. And yes there is a fundamental difference between size and development. Size does not guarantee development. I see a lot of huge bodybuilders who look to have no fat on their bodies yet they show little to no detail. In my humble opinion, a developed muscle shows maturity, detail, and separation all while being dramatic in size. A developed physique is worth far more than a physique that is simply large. My intent is not to bash the current crop of professional bodybuilders. In fact, I have the utmost respect for todays top bodybuilders because I know the amount of work they put in and the endless amount of sacrifice that is necessary in order to excel. The purpose of this discussion lies far beyond a simple critique of past and present bodybuilders. There is something to be said for the importance of individuality not only in this sport of ours but also in the society in general. I remember watching an interview prior to the 1995 Mr. Olympia in which Dorian Yates was discussing his feelings going into the show. What he said really stood out in my mind: Me, myself, Im not playing anyone elses game. Im just playing my game. This year, Im not necessarily coming in any bigger but I feel Im coming in a lot better; better shape, with better definition, better symmetry, and more finish. So all these guys are playing my old game. Im playing the new game. In my mind, people go wrong playing someone elses game. Dorian was Dorian. Why would anyone else try to be him? Take a look at our society. All you see are people trying to be like other people. I ask myself, what the world would do if everyone who you talked to was going to college to become a doctor or an attorney or a fuckin accountant. How many goddamn attorneys does the world need? Not nearly as many as people must think because I know of a few attorney who are making less money than people who didnt even go to college because attorneys in this country are a dime a dozen. Thats why they became an attorney in the first place right? Because attorneys make so much money and because their parents told them it was a good idea. What the fuck?

On The Grind. Lessons From Three Decades Of Hustle.

by G Diesel
Dream Big A dogged, arrogant belief in self and the childlike idealism that comes with not knowing my limits. This is my greatest blessing, my priceless attribute. An unrealistic expectation of uncommon successthis is all I know. My dreams, since day one, have been my weapons. These vivid visions of achievement seen through a prism whose colors arent bound by a lack of light, they are my constant companions. Ive always seen my goals, off on a distant mountaintop. My eyes have long remained fixed on that elusive golden chalice, even on those many dreary days when I was the only one that could see it. Doubt and scorn, I know their faces wellmany skeptics and cynics have littered my path. It is their negative sentiment that has long been my fuel and that will remain as such well on into the future. Defend the Underdog It is easy to root for the winning team, to hop on the bandwagon and to front-run your way to glory, but that shit aint for me. Im an underdog and as I fight my way tooth and nail up that steep ladder, scratching and clawing for every inch that is mine, I will never forget my brothers that have been overlooked or left behind. True greatness grows forth from overcoming adversity and breaking free of the shackles society has imposed. That shit aint handed to you, it is fought for as if your life hung in the balance. Give me the last pick, the roughneck, the outcast, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Let me build my squad with hungry motherfuckers too busy busting ass to pat themselves on the back or to take shit for granted. The world will soon be ours, even if we have to take this bitch by force. Protect Your Rep To live by a code nowadays is pass. Few understand honor or adherence to an abstract catalog of selfimposed laws... All the more reason why I walk my walk. In this world, we have little more than our reputationwhat the outside world has come to expect of us based on our past behavior. At the end of the day, our actions and how we treat others and approach life may be the only things that truly matter. I cherish my self-esteem and expect much of myself when faced with tough decisions and when put in compromising situations. It would often be far easier to not have this yoke of expectation and morality hanging about my neck, but without it, I would never be the man I am. Risk Is Necessary There are no arms below to catch me, no safety net to break my fall. This high wire act that is my life is all I have, it is all I know. Step after precarious step I struggle to keep my balance, too focused to look forward, too busy thinking about the next step to look back. I cant afford the luxury to peer over my shoulder and assess how far Ive come, because it truly means nothing in the end if I dont make it to the other side. Ive put myself out there, with my shit on the line, cuz it is the only way. The safety of the assured sure is seductive, but I have always known that such a life could never be mine. The only solace I have is to know that my place will never be on the sidelines with those too scared to step out onto the wire. My only security is to know that I took the chances when others played it safe, that I anteed up when the rest folded. I will risk it all cuz that is all I know. My contingency plan has always been to die trying. Im out here on my grind, where I belong, where I am home, where I am meant to be. If you need me, you know where to find me. I hope to see you there.

I was born at 11:11pm on June 30, 1978. Christine pushed me out into the world just in time for the 4th of July weekend. Fireworks and barbecues aside, I always convinced myself that these times would some day be noted. Not because of a birthright or trust fund, not because Im in any way more inherently special than Ma Dukes has always told me I am. I simply felt that way because I was convinced that my time here would be spent in the pursuit of the extraordinary, fighting the great struggle. Reaching the survival milestone of three decades on this planet gave me pause. It begged me to question why Ive made the choices Ive made and why Ive long done it my way, even though often times it all only made sense to me. Behold a few precious jewels that Ive gathered from thirty years on the grind. Do with them as you see fit Live Through Me No one can ever really die, that is if you dont allow them to perish. Your daily ways and actions are capable of immortalizing the ones you lovethose who have departed this mortal coil. Though they are physically gone, the wisdom and lessons that have been passed on forever remain emblazoned on our hearts. We carry that spirit with us and live our lives for them. From friends and family that left too early to casual acquaintances and those viewed from afar, from total strangers the world over that have navigated a similar path to ancient peoples that we have only read about in dusty books, we are one. As the cycle continues we too will one day pass and it will be the job of those that weve touched to shoulder the legacy weve left behind. In the meantime, those that have moved me live still with each breath I take. The honor of their noble memory keeps me accountable. Know the Hard Way Life aint easy. To exist and survive on this planet is a constant struggle, from the birth canal til that final walk toward the light in the distance. Do not avoid pain and obstacle and challenge Embrace it. Do not shy away from discomfort, move toward it. Every king should for at least one day shovel shit, living in the muck and mire where the rest of humanity does our daily deeds. Im thankful everyday for the late nights bouncing, the desk job, the personal training gigs, the long commutes, the early morning manual labor. I remember the disrespect, the lack of appreciation, the anger. I know the burning pain of want and longing I know hunger. I know stress and piling bills and heavy responsibility. I realize that nothing is promised and that the real shit is all but a bad break away. This knowledge keeps me in check. I know the hard way and for that I am thankful. Life aint easy and it was never meant to be. Punch the Clock All Ive ever wanted to be was a self-made man. I want to know that the man I am is that which Ive built, that what I have is there because I earned it. I have no respect for dynasties and silver spoons. I cant relate to leisure and ease Save that shit for the rich kids. What I do know is hard work and long hours. To be an architect of a timeless structure takes much time and effort, planning and execution and the sort of uncommon dedication not so often encountered in common quarters. There is always someone out there pushing harder, wanting it more, putting in the work. There is always more I could do. I could always do better. Ive come a long way, but there is so much more to be done. Days and nights, years and decades still yet to be piled up. Keep that lunch pail packed; the work day has just begun.

What is Hardcore? by The House

As Animals, we all hear the word hardcore thrown around everyday. What is the true meaning of hardcore and what makes you hardcore? I dont feel I need to say how hardcore I am or challenge how hardcore someone else is. We all have different training styles and deal with lifes curve balls with different methods and approaches. But let me try to define the word as I understand it. I dont even know if there is a true meaning of what hardcore is, but I know what most think of when they use it. Most people think that throwing heavy weights around or just moving big weight makes them the true picture of the word. I dont buy that. If that does not make you hardcore then you might ask, "What does?" Does making loud noises, grunting, and dropping weights from great heights do the job? Again, I have to say no. Im not saying not to do these things or that I dont do these things, but that doesnt make us hardcore. Being the biggest, strongest, or even the meanest son of a bitch that talks like a sailor, well does that make one hardcore? I'm not sure. Here is what I feel makes us truly hardcore... First, we must be dedicated. We all have days where we feel like missing a workout or putting it off until the next day, but when we overcome this and have a good workout, this is what makes us better and takes us one step closer. Second, determination. Day in and day out we fight to get better. The determined keep their head down and push through the hard time in the gym and in life. Nothing will get in our way. Related to determination is discipline. Discipline is about getting up each day and drawing a line in the sand... Pushing that line every single day even if you get kicked in the face and that line gets pushed back. You don't lose your cool, you don't lose your focus. You just get right back up and move that line back, gaining an inch each day. A fourth trait you must have is adaptation. Being able to adapt to what is thrown at you in your workouts. Working with what you got and getting better is what will separate you from the crowd. You got to be smart and find what works for you and motivate yourself to change. Being hardcore doesnt have to be something that is seen, heard, or proven to anyone else. Hardcore comes from within. It's about pushing through when most would stop, or finding what works for you even if it is on a different path than most. It is going 100% each day and taking each day 100% as it is dealt. People have said that I am not hardcore because I dont train with heavy weight. I have trained with heavy weight and do train with heavy weight, but what works for me is different. I am not going to go to a gym and train to impress people. I am going to go to the gym to get better. I check my ego at the door and I stimulate growth. I could put on 225 and do straight bar curls to make people stand up and notice, but that would only stroke my ego. Or I can put on 135 and curl it with good, strict form and pump blood into the muscle and grow. I dont want to draw attention at the gym. I just want to be in and out and get better than I was. If you train with light weight or heavy weight it doesnt matter as long as you do what you need to get better. We all have different goals, but we are all brothers of iron and we need to stick together. We all are dealt different cards in life, but with dedication, determination, discipline and adaptation, we can get better and reach our goals in this game--no matter what you do whether it's bodybuilding, powerlifting, strong man, Olympic lifting, athletic training, or just plain old training. We all have to make sacrifices in our lives and weigh out what needs to get done. Not too many people can just train. Lets face it, weve got to pay attention to the many aspects of our lives... We all have a lot on our plates. Some of us have family, jobs, and/or school that take up time and make us put training in the passenger seat. Once you can find a balance of training, family and career you have made a step forward. This step forward takes dedication, determination, discipline and adaptation not only within the game of iron but in the game of life.

Anything You Want

by Ox
I get a lot of questions about the diet from such a variety of individuals and yes the diet can work for anyone. But I will say this: If youre gonna make the decision to do the keto diet or any other diet for that matter, make sure youre ready. Repeat, make sure you are ready. Looking back at my experience with that fat burner, I wasnt ready to take it. I hardly even built a solid base of muscle. Even if I got ripped, what was I gonna see? My ribs? Some abs? Big deal. I would have done myself a much greater service if I had went and bought a good container of protein and ate my face off and tried to gain as much muscle as possible. What Im sayin is to forgo the "beach muscles" and build a real base if you're into this sport known as bodybuilding. This is a concept that took a while for me to grasp, but once I did, I was that much better for it. Im sure I could have competed as a teen and done well but instead, from 18 to 23 years old, it was one big offseason for me. I wasnt lean. I didnt want to go to the beach in the summer. I sure as hell didnt have abs. But at 23 I knew I was finally ready to diet down and compete and I was able to make a much greater impact than if I had been trying to be pretty all along. I tell people all the time that bodybuilding is a process. Youre not gonna look good all the time. You should know that this game is all about sacrifice. You may have to sacrifice lookin' pretty all year round so that when the time comes you can show some serious progress. Ill tell you right now, the guys who try and look pretty all year round so they can show off their abs never progress. They will look the same five years from now as they do right now. And its because they are too scared to just give their body what it needs to grow and build some real meaningful muscle. Do you think I give a rat's ass if you cant see my abs in the offseason? People have asked me why I get so fat in the offseason. I tell them that I get in shape come contest time and thats all they need to know. I use myself as an example because I hope to save a lot of you some misguided effort. I wasted time flopping back and forth between trying to add muscle and trying to be lean and it got me nowhere. I made my greatest gains and really built my physique when I dedicated myself to getting as large as humanly possible. Then I dieted... And I had more than beach muscles. I had a stage-worthy physique. And I know that all of you may not aspire to step foot on a bodybuilding stage. Thats fine. I also realize that many of you would simply like to be in shape. Thats cool too. But I also know that there are a lot of you out there, especially younger lifters, who oftentimes feel confused as to what they should do. You wanna get big but you dont wanna look outta shape. Its a process. Trust me when I tell you that youve gotta forgo the beach muscles in the name of attaining something greater. Build your base. Get big. Diet later. Much later when you're ready. Doing so will put you so much further ahead of everyone else. From there, you can do anything you want.

Over the past few years, Ive gotten to know a lot of you guys on the FORVM. Ive even bumped into some of you at the Animal Barbell Club (ABC) events and had the opportunity to talk with you, one on one. And whether it was on the FORVM or in person, everyone has always been stand up. Truth. Ive tried my best to share with all of you the things Ive learned as well as the things which I am experiencing day by day. I have to thank all of you because the support Ive received from all of you has been nothing short of overwhelming. And just know that I think its pretty cool that so many people want so badly to hear what I have to say. But after feeling flattered and inspired and all that, what I ultimately feel is responsibility. Knowing that so many people take what I have to say so seriously leaves me feeling like I better do my absolute best to steer everyone in the right direction. And of course I would never tell anyone to do something unless I thought it was the best thing for them to do. But yesterday I was sitting in the gym after training. Anyway, one of the owners of the gym always brings in old issues of bodybuilding mags. Needless to say, I get a kick out of looking at the back issues because theres some good stuff in there. There was a Flex from '03 with Lee Priest on the cover. So Im flippin through the thing procrastinating about eating my dry chicken, broccoli, and bland rice and I come across an ad for a fat burner that was popular back in the day. Remember those ads that featured some fat sloppy mess in the "before" pic and dude who looked like he could win the Olympia if you gave him a few years in the "after" pic? The after shot would show a guy peeled to the bone and jacked on top of it. Damn. It was pretty nuts because in the before pic the dude looked he hardly had any muscle on him. Now Im not here to talk about marketing schemes or the effectiveness of the product. Its all irrelevent. Seeing this ad sparked something in my memory which I think is really significant... It brought me back to my sophomore year in high school. I guess that makes me sixteen or so. I had pretty much just started screwing around with weights and was more what I would call skinny fat. You know the build. I looked skinny but still had some pudge on me. I remember seeing these same ads and thinking that if I took this shit I was gonna be ripped and have muscles popping out that I didnt even know I had on my body. Needless to say, I tried the shit and only ended up a smaller, more depleted version of my former self. Not only was I not any leaner, I lost strength on a lot of my lifts and I was frustrated. So why am I talking about this? The reason I bring this up is because, over the past year I have seen the interest that many of you have taken in the keto diet. Now, I have found this style of dieting to be incredibly effective at allowing one to drop bodyfat very efficiently while preserving the maximum amount of lean muscle. Not to say that this is the be all end all of dieting or that this is the only was to get in shape because there may be something better out there that I have not tried and there is definitely more than one way to get you into shape.

Hey hardcore, let me ask you something. You sure you're doing all that you can to keep the gains keep comin' right? Yeah, I know you're training balls to the wall, chokin' down meal after meal and filling in the gaps with all the right supps. You tell me you've got it all covered and my good nature is gonna lead me to believe you. But, let's talk lifestyle. We both know that getting results out of your training has just as much, if not more, to do with the discipline and focus you apply to your lifestyle as it does the discipline and focus with which you approach your training. Ultimately it is the life you lead outside of the gym that determines whether those grueling sets put you on a path to victory or lead you down the road of mediocrity. The choice is yours. If you're a true student of this game, you've come to acknowledge the fact that nothing works in isolation. Leg extensions don't work without squats. Proteins don't work without carbs and fats. Most importantly, all that training you do isn't worth shit without proper rest and recuperation. If you desire to achieve a physique that is so extraordinary that it appears inhuman, you first have to understand what it takes to simply be a mortal. To just survive, the bare minimum, you need the following: food, water, sleep and oxygen. If you're reading this right now, you've got those going for you at least. Before you can even hope to be the biggest and best that you are capable of being, you have got to perfect the three things you can control, the food, water and the sleep. We all know that good nutrition, plenty of clean water, a healthy supply of oxygen and a good night's sleep are needed to be an average healthy human being. So then why is it that every bodybuilder I know who is dedicated to putting his blood, sweat and tears into his training and comes armed with a Tupperware-loaded cooler, a gallon of water and chest full of supplements is quick to neglect a good night's sleep before he misses a training session, meal or dose of supps? Maybe nobody else told you, but I don't have a problem being the one to say that your priorities are fucked up. Listen bro, if you can't even peel your ass out of bed in the morning because you either slept like shit or went to bed too damn late and cut yourself so short on sleep time, you're doing something wrong. You're tired. Your mind and your body are beat. Do you really think that going to the gym and making the best out of your session will magically negate the fact that you're functioning in an inadequate state? Guess what hardcore, false. If your car was running out of gas would you set out on a road trip and expect to make it to your destination without refueling? Of course you wouldn't. Yet I see guys run to the gym day after day despite getting a less than optimal amount of quality sleep and they still expect to grow. Stop with the unrealistic expectations It's fucking stupid and it's not helping you. Bottom line, you need your sleep. Sleep is absolutely critical. Don't believe it? Take a second and think about the times in your life when you slept the most-when you were a baby and when you were a teenager. Well, it's no fucking coincidence that the times when your body required the most sleep were when it was growing. See? So, how many hours did you get last night? Six? Seven? Eight if you're lucky? If you're waking up tired, it's not enough. Maybe you recognize how crucial a good night's sleep is and you made it your business to set aside a good eight or nine hours, but you slept like shit. You're wound up and thinking about work, money, your girl. The list goes on and on. If you're gonna have any shot in hell of tackling all that shit head on when the alarm clock rings, it's gotta be lights out when your head hits that pillow. Let's face it, you're willing to torture yourself in the gym, eat a meaningful diet and dump good money on hyped supps that promise to activate some anabolic pathway or another and make you grow an extra head on your calf and shit like that. If you see it for what it really is, sleep is the ultimate tool for the bodybuilder; it's anabolic in nature. When you sleep, you recover and grow like nothing else. You burn fat while you sleep. Your entire body and mind undergo a process of rejuvenation. You wake up with your skin tighter, your muscles fuller, your energy up and your mind ready to go. Yet sleep is the one area that too many lifters just overlook. Ever notice that something that seems like the end of the world at 10:00 p.m. is nothing more than a mere concern the next morning? That's because your mind is rested and your head is clear. If you're going to have the mental energy and motivation to dedicate yourself entirely to your goal, sound sleep is a must. If the slew of anabolic hormones that are produced during deep and restful sleep isn't enough to get you do take it seriously, I don't know what is. Look, the bottom line is that sleep is crucial in order for you to simply function. Without it, you'd die. Your brain needs it. Your nervous system needs it. Your endocrine system, your immune system Shit, every system in your body depends on a restful night's sleep. Before you even begin to think about your physical aspirations, you need to make sure you're gettin' your zzzzs. If you neglect your sleep, you limit your recuperation. Once your recuperation is limited, your training becomes meaningless. And if your training is in vain, then so is the large amount of food and supps you take in. Get it? Sleep is one of the most basic and fundamental parts of what we do. Fuck that one thing up and everything else is compromised. Everything. I know you wouldn't attempt to build a champion physique without great nutrition, heavy compound movements, a strong work ethic and adequate recuperation and because of that, I know you'll regard sleep with the same respect and diligence that I do. Sleep is the true bodybuilder's foundation.

85 YOUR JOURNEY

Sleep Fast by G Diesel

I never sleep cuz sleep is the cousin of death. This brilliant Nas lyric from 1994 may perfectly convey the hustler's mindset, the perspective of those under heightened stress or maybe the paranoid thoughts of a brother on the run from Johnny Law. But if you're a bodybuilder and you don't cop your fair share of Zs, the death that is sure to follow is that of your strength and size gains. Don't sleep on your need for sleep, as it could be the difference between those that make it and those that just fade away in this iron-clad game we call the life. Back in the day, I slept. A lot. Like a bear into hibernation, I would stomp through my gym forest, eat my face off and sleep every available hour I could. My lifestyle-school, a night job a few days a week, crashing on my folks' dime, my girl's for dinner, chilling with the fellas at the gym, writing or catching a flick when the mood was right-it all lent itself to maximum recovery. It was simple, carefree, quiet and low stress. In many ways, it was a utopian period for muscle building in the nation of Diesel. Times were easy. Life was good. Life's still good and I'm blessed no doubt. But those laid back, free-wheeling days of free time are a thing of the past. A decade later, I'm neck deep in the business of modern adulthood, but of course with my own twist. Full time job, family, intense career aspirations, long commutes, two dogs, all the while still training my ass off. You do the math. Free moments are tough to come by and the first thing that goes in such a scenario is the time to get the necessary rest. As such, your recovery is always hanging in the balance. You find yourself perpetually one missed meal, forgotten supplement dose or skipped emergency power nap away from bringing your gains to a screeching halt. You also find yourself really coming to cherish a good night's sleep. It is a luxury. Like eating sushi or buying fresh gear. You can't afford to do it all the time and you often find yourself wishing you could, but when the chance comes, you jump all over it and it sure as shit feels good. Thing is, these 24-hour production blocks we're so lucky to have with each rising sun are finite and few. You've gotta cram as much good shit into each one and pile them up til your number is called. The fact of the matter is, the grown ass men of the world that are regularly getting ten hours of sleep per night after the age of 20 are lazy fucks who quite possibly are wasting their lives away (Could you actually hear the envy in my keystrokes as I typed those words?). Shit, a solid eight hours is often a veritable impossibility. Damn. Without sleep, the human machine struggles to keep up the pace. Muscle soreness is heightened, focus suffers, immunity breaks down, the CNS strains. You're eventually trapped under the weather and wind up dragging your ass for days on end. Workouts are missed and the progress you so covet stops dead in its tracks. You become a listless, cranky, disagreeable sonofabitch. Forever sick and tired of being sick and tired. If you value your productivity and quality of life, this is not a zone in which you want to find yourself all too often. Knowing the inevitability of my lack of sleep going in, I do my best to prepare and make the most of the limited shuteye I do get. Sleep efficiency is at all times my goal. Like my Pops always said, Gotta sleep fast. The simple brilliance in that succinct statement always makes me smile. If you're only able to get four hours of sleep, it better be the deepest and most restful four hours possible. Where you're coming up short on quantity, you've gotta make sure the quality is on the money. When you're training balls to the wall, the profundity of this sleep mandate is all the more etched in stone. As such, I've long taken steps to improve the quality of my sleep and to augment my ability to recover in less than optimal conditions. I've often literally visualized the sleep process for bodybuilders as a human period of metamorphosis. A time of regeneration and renewal, when growth and evolution occur in dramatic fashion. Enveloped in darkness, shut off from the world and growing in seclusion for whatever period available. A cool and quiet room, maybe some reading or TV to relax and a moment of meditative visualization to clear my mind of the constant flood of plots, schemes and ambitions that litter my conscious mind. This down time is most certainly a course of action most critical among all living creatures, but even more so for the hard training iron athlete. And this, like the processes and functions of all machines, requires fuel and regular maintenance. My pre-sleep regimen has changed many times over the years, but the core purpose remains the same. Relax, recover and grow. The food and supplement choices made during these periods are made specifically with that intent in mind. For relaxation, I'd often have a cup of tea, many times chamomile or Sleepytime. ZMA has long played a part in my pre-slumber regimen, helping with deeper sleep and increased hormone output. I'd always incorporate an array of amino acids-Nitro for my EAAs and BCAAs, Universal GH Max for added arginine and ornithine and usually a healthy dose of glutamine as well. Beyond that I'd take my second dose of Omega for the day and a protein shake--usually whey mixed in milk or a protein blend containing fast proteins along with a slow digesting source like casein. All taken within 30 minutes of bedtime, with the intent of creating a makeshift IV drip of nutrients trickling through my bloodstream all night long, keeping me anabolic and hastening the growth and recovery processes. Bolstered by my homemade anabolic cocktail, I would enter my cocoon, only to emerge again just a few hours later. A new man? Not exactly, but one who has done his homework and pulled out all the stops in maximizing his recovery. Maybe it wasn't ten hours spent sleeping soundly in a secluded Swedish spa's hyperbaric chamber. But it is the best I can do while still struggling and striving in the real world. The cool and calm fortress of solitude I seek may exist only nestled in the grey matter between my ears, but I will journey there when the stresses of life dictate, when the need for recovery is the most extreme, when refuge can only be taken, when new growth can only occur, in the shuteye of a few well spent hours. The wailing siren of the alarm clock awaits ready to scream. Better sleep fast.

87 YOUR JOURNEY

This stuffs great! Works within half an hour, not like your typical creatine supplement. Gives you a pump throughout your workout from beginning to end. Highly recommended for anyone who is serious about getting big and strong. - Jimmy V.
Rest and recovery... R&R. Yeah, we all need it to recuperate; to re-energize; to heal, the mind and the body. Problem is, too many of us see R&R as a luxury. How many of us have skipped vacations and time away from our jobs? How many of us stay at work, running on that never-ending treadmill, day after day? Good ol R&R is perhaps the single most overlooked and least considered element of the mass building equation. But without it, youre cooked. Serious training leaves you depleted. As weve all come to understand, youre only as good as you can recover. Nutrition plays a critical role in accelerating healing, sure. But with the crushing stresses of heavy iron and the toxic environment that surrounds us in this crazy world, eating and supplementing right only goes so far. So what are you missing? Easy Sleep. If you cant sleep properly and maximize the recuperation opportunities that come with your down time, youll never build the physique you desire. Period. You can train like a maniac, but the growth you seek happens outside the gym. Sleep time, put quite simply, equals growth time. With the busiest of schedules strained by work, family, training and commutingthe first thing to get cast to the side is adequate sleep. And without adequate R&R, you wont reach your full potential. Loaded with relaxation and sleep enhancers, immune support, essential aminos and patented recovery agents, a single pack of Animal PM taken prior to bedtime delivers a potent dose of nutrients designed to lock you in to the anabolic muscle building zone during slumber. The Animal PM formula is designed to make more efficient recovery use of your nightly periods of shuteye. To reduce soreness, facilitate healing and generate fresh growth during typical down time hours of rest and reposethis is the express intent of Animal PM.

Animal PM contains powerful herbs like valerian and chamomile which have been used for centuries because of their ability to naturally promote relaxation, reduce anxiety and help to combat insomnia. These are coupled with L-theanine, a unique amino acid that is found naturally in green tea and is known for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety while also improving sleep quality and enhanced mental acuity, and humulus lupulus which has been used traditionally for nervous disorders as well as helping to reduce anxiety and enhance overall sleep quality. Mucuna pruriens is then added to this potent mix for its ability to promote deep sleep by elevating the production of L-dopa, an amino acid that converts into dopamine. Dopamine is an essential component of our body and it's required for proper functioning of the brain. What Animal PM works to do is facilitate a calming state of being prior to bed so that you can more easily fall asleep and stay in deep sleep. Next up in Animal PM is the GH Boosting Complex. This complex consists of specialized natural growth hormone (GH) boosters. What is growth hormone? Growth hormone is a protein-based polypeptide hormone made up 191 amino acids that is synthesized and secreted by cells in the anterior pituitary called somatotropes. GH plays a vital role in several complex physiological processes, including growth and metabolism. In terms of GH support, Animal PM contains a key support blend of the following amino acidsgamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG), ornithine HCl , straight L-tryptophanand the phospholipid, alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine (alpha-GPC). GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. It aids in helping the brain to relax as well as balance excitation with inhibition. In addition to GABAs relaxation effects, studies have shown that it also stimulates the natural production of GH. Last but not least we have the Immune and Recovery Complex, also bolstered by robust doses of potent and versatile aminos. What does immune health have to do with recovery? For starters, if youre sick, you cant expect to recover and grow, let alone train at the intensity needed for gains in strength and performance. Suppressed immune function can basically bring your gains to a complete halt, preventing an iron athlete from ever performing optimally or achieving peak condition.

On the recovery side, if your body isnt recovering from the constant stresses being placed on it, you just cant expect your body to progress. Animal PM takes this into account with its unique Animal Nitro EAA Blend, a combo of the 100% pure uncoupled essential amino acids (EAA) found in the popular and effective post-workout amino acid recovery supplement, Animal Nitro. This blend supplies the body with only the purest amino acids needed for recoverythe EAAs. The targeted use of EAAs can heighten the anabolic process and hasten muscular repair. The last parts of this complex are two, unique patented compounds Immunolin and Humanofort. This premium juice is what pushes what is already a powerful rest and recovery formula in the stratosphere (admit it, isnt this what youve come to expect from Animal?). Immunolin is a purified immunoglobulin isolate that contains beneficial growth factors, immune-regulating cytokines as well as other immuno-proteins. These proteins, or antibodies, are naturally produced by the immune system and are key for preventing illness and infection. Think of it this way Immunolin provides the immune system with more of its own natural resources to defend itself. Humanofort is a proprietary embryonic peptide matrix that yields naturally occurring IGF-1, IGF-2, FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factors), NGF (Nerve Growth Factors), EGF (Epidermal Growth Factors) and CTGF (Connective Tissue Growth Factor). Humanofort is a native oligopeptide extract containing naturally-occurring growth factors. These oligopeptides (essential amino and short amino acid chains) assist the body in normalizing numerous cellular processes by activating important cellular receptors. When this occurs, healing is accelerated and a variety of cellular processes are stabilized. Humanofort may help the body increase natural testosterone levels, heighten libido, boost endocrine function, raise adrenal hormone levels, combat cortisol, decrease recovery time and promote deep sleep. This single ingredient so clearly touches on several of the core intents behind the Animal PM formulation. required for Athletes who have trouble falling asleep More efficient recovery Better quality sleep Decreased muscle soreness

89 YOUR JOURNEY ANIMAL PM

Shut Up and Sleep:Animal PM is Here

The "x factor". This is how recovery has long been viewed. Beyond the great uncontrollable variable that is the genetics you landed from your Mamma and Pappy, the rest of the growth equation is within your control. That said there are no real secrets. The "gurus" that make a few grand a pop writing up workouts and diets here and there may not be so pleased to hear that, but at the most advanced level of the game, the playing field is pretty level. Training, eating, drugs, and supplements? There are no new ideas under the sun. There are precious few means to get that elusive "edge". Many serious iron athletes take steps to play the game right. They do their due diligence in all aspects of the lifestyle. All. They never miss a training session or a meal and are meticulous with their supplementation. As such, there is often little room for dramatic improvement and their progress is often a matter of simply managing the minutiae. That one uncharted territory, the potent "x factor" that, if mastered, could change the game for the most dedicated of bodybuilders, is the often unharnessed element of recovery. This factor, while so vitally critical, seems the most difficult to pinpoint and exploit. Like I said, "seems"... See, the problem is recovery is a concept that seems vague. Technically your protein shake and Animal Nitro are "recovery products". The same could be said for the whole food protein and growth calories that you ingest on the daily. When speaking of a more targeted approach to recovery, we're considering a means of making the most of your rest time, minimizing the turnaround necessary to get in the gym the next day and attack the iron, while maximizing muscular growth and limiting overall body fatigue. At Animal, the R&D department knew mere recovery wasn't specific enough. They realized that they needed to key in on the most basic of the human body's regenerative processes, get it in the cross hairs and take it down. They came to the understanding that they weren't simply talking about recovery in general, but that most crucial of anabolic recovery factors, the factor this is most often overlooked. What is it? Sleep. Yeah, sleep... Seems so simple now, right? The old world, rusty iron wisdom stated that sleep = growth. The more shuteye you get, the more time you give your physique a chance to grow. Mother Nature proves this fact in that newborns of all species sleep the most in their earliest stages of development - the time in which they also grow most dramatically. In order to minimize fatigue and allow for consistent, hardcore training multiple weeks daily; to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS); to generate larger and stronger tissue; to stay mentally fresh, focused and motivated, stacking your Zs is absolutely critical. Adequate deep sleep is a categorical must if a dedicated iron athlete is ever to grow and perform to his potential. All things considered, however, very few of us live in a perfect world and even fewer of us have access to the ideal resources and optimal living conditions required to be the best bodybuilders possible. We miss meals. We work long hours. We skip sleep. We make do, but one thing's for sure... We never make excuses. Ever. Sure you have a job, a family, responsibilities, obligations, goals and hobbies, but no matter what you get it done in the gym. With such commitment and such a full schedule, something's gotta give. That something tends too often to be sleep. For most of us, the idea of a solid 8 hours of shuteye is a straight up pipedream. All too often, we're getting by on much less. Expecting to grow as best we can when facing such a reality is optimistic at best. But that's a fucking copout, bottom line. Our excuses mean jack shit in the real world. Instead, we must endeavor to maximize the quality of our sleep. Remember this simple thought. You tear down in the gym, but you build up when you rest. And there's no rest like good sleep. Sleeping in a deeper and more tranquil and relaxed state; becoming more efficient in our rest and as such maximizing recovery. This is what it's all about for the dedicated bodybuilder. This was the intent with which the good brothers from Animal initially entered into the process of creating a new potent pack to round out the most hardcore and comprehensive line the game. It was with this purpose that they created Animal PM. Animal PM was created with one simple intent: to maximize the recovery process at night by creating a more tranquil and anabolic sleep environment in which the battered body of an intense training bodybuilder could rest and repair. To be worthy of the Animal logo atop its can, Animal PM needed to be complete and cover the sleep process from shuteye to the alarm clock. Luckily for the worn and weary warriors among us, that is exactly what it does. PM's powerful sleep recovery formula starts strong, with three whole grams of proven hGH (growth hormone) boosters designed to elevate the release of this ultra-anabolic hormone during slumber. With GABA and alpha-GPC as well as proven potent "growth" output stimulating aminos arginine AKG, ornithine and L-tryptophan, PM is a natural GH-

production powerhouse that does its regenerative and muscle building work while your body is in a state of rest. Next in the mix is the "Immune & Recovery Complex". This potent blend of free form amino acids and prized patented compounds helps to heighten anabolism, improve protein synthesis and provide support to immune function, as the hazards of hard training and life in the real world leave your immune system and central nervous system under a state of constant attack. This complex is led by a couple of no-brainer inclusions - the battle tested recovery force that is the essential amino acid (EAA) blend found in the widely popular Animal Nitro as well as what has long been a staple weapon of advanced bodybuilders, L-glutamine. The "Immune & Recovery Complex" is bolstered even further by the kind of cutting-edge, patented ingredients you've come to expect from Animal. Two such ingredients found in robust doses in PM are Humanofort and Immunolin. Humanofort is a very unique embryonic peptide matrix which provides myriad growth factors elementally responsible for new tissue growth such as IGF-1 and IGF-2. Immunolin, on the other hand, is an immunoglobulin bovine extract rich in highly coveted growth factors. These two premium compounds serve to literally "supercharge" the Animal PM formula. Finally, tying it all together and helping to completely differentiate Animal PM from any other generic recovery or sleep or relaxation product on the market, is the wicked "Sleep & Relaxation Complex". This complex is designed to put you at ease and help facilitate deep and restful sleep while the anabolic growth factors of the previous two complexes do their vital restorative work. By natural, non-habit forming and non-narcotic means, PM facilitates a state of heightened relaxation priming you for reinvigorating anabolic sleep. PM also delivers a blend of time-tested natural elements like valerian root, chamomile and hops. These three are then fortified with L-dopa (from mucuna pruriens) and potent L-theanine. These ingredients are further amplified by the acclaimed mineral combo of zinc and magnesium, both included in study-supported doses designed to not only contribute to more sound sleep but also to potentially boosting anabolic hormone production in those mineral deficient. Animal has done it again, this time in the form of a nighttime powerhouse, Animal PM. Like its brethren, Animal PM is complete and comprehensive supplementation for the serious bodybuilder and only the serious bodybuilder. The only complete nighttime anabolic formula designed specifically for the rigorous demands of hardcore bodybuilders, Animal PM takes the concept of recovery to a new level - out of the weight room and into the bedroom.

By combining GH boosters, anabolic aminos, patented growth factors, and natural sleep and relaxation compounds into a single, conveniently dosed powerful "pack" meant to be taken each night right before you rack out, Animal PM does for recovery what Animal Pak has down for training, Animal Flex has done for joints and what Animal Cuts has done for fat and water weight - rendered the competition incomplete and obsolete. Stack your Zs with Animal PM... When you do, you'll turn the "x" into quality Zs.

foundational supplement, we wanted a formula that could be used "long term". Besides, PM has natural compounds that increase the natural production of melatonin. Can I stack PM with other Animal products? Absolutely. At its core, Animal is a complete "stacking" system. Depending on your goals, you'd max 'n match different Animal supps. All of the packs are meant to be stacked. For example, Pak/PM would make for a great basic stack. Or, you could run Pak/PM/Flex/Omega and cover your bases. For absorption, you would just want to avoid taking any of the other packs within 2-3 hours of taking PM. Should PM be "cycled"? See above. There are two basic types of Animal products, "foundational" and "cycled". Foundational Animal products like Pak, Flex, Nitro or Omega, you can take daily. For products like Cuts, M-Stak, Test, and Stak, you "cycle" (21 days on, 7 days off). Animal PM is foundational. It's a bodybuilder's sleep support supplement that can be taken year round. No cycling is necessary. Can I remove the ZMA in Animal PM? One of the great things about Animal is the flexibility of the "pack" all-in-one system. Another great feature is that in some products, you can remove some of the complexes. You can remove the stims in Animal Pump, Cuts and M-Stak for max flexibility (like if you train at night). You can also remove the diuretic complex in Cuts. With Animal PM, the ZMA component is found in the blue capsules. Easy. I am a natural athlete. Can I use Animal PM? Animal PM contains nothing illicit or illegal from an FDA standpoint, and while being extremely potent, has no hormonal metabolites. Still, if you perform in any competitive sports, we strongly advise you to run the PM formula by the heads of your federation's sanctioning body. Better to be safe than sorry. Any sides from taking Animal PM? Shortly after taking a pack, some users may notice a tingling sensation that should subside shortly thereafter. Some may experience deeper breathing. This is normal too. Upon waking up, a small number of users may feel some leftover drowsiness. Now as this is a sleep supp, the other main side to consider is that you may fall into deep sleep after taking this, so the usual warnings apply about not driving, operating heavy machinery, and the like. What if I already sleep well and don't use a sleep aid. Could I still benefit from Animal PM? Yup. Remember, Animal PM is much more than just a sleep aid. It's also a relaxation product, an anti-catabolic supplement, a GH booster, an immune support supplement, an anabolic recovery product, and more. Like all Animal products, PM is efficaciously dosed and wrapped up in a single convenient, pre-dosed "pack". So even if you already sleep well now, you can still benefit from these numerous other potent complexes. After all, PM takes recovery to the next level. Besides, if you sleep well, you could still enhance the overall quality of your sleep. Ive noticed that I experienced extra energy when taking Animal PM for the first time and am wondering why. There are a small percentage of individuals who when first taking PM notice an increase in energy. This is your body getting used to taking an herbal based sleep and recovery supplement and it may take a few days to get acclimated to these new compounds and for your natural sleep cycle to adjust. After the adjustment period, this increase in energy prior to bed will subside.

Animal PM FAQs
Do I have to take PM before bedtime? Yup. Much like there is the nutritional "anabolic window of opportunity" after you lift for post-workout supps, there is a critical period that exists when it comes to recovery: Sleep. Animal PM targeted to maximize and enhance your anabolic potential during what is arguably the most important part of the day for the seasoned bodybuilder. There's a reason why we called this product Animal "P.M." Should I take PM on non-training days? Animal PM can be taken year round as it is a natural sleep support supplement. Unlike OTCs and drugs, it's non-addictive, meaning you can take it daily. It works to aid recovery, promote rest and relaxation, enhance quality of sleep as well as aid in natural hormone production - all things that need support on a daily basis. Ideally you should for the best possible absorption. That said, we're realistic. We know many bodybuilders take a shake or other meal like cottage cheese before bedtime - and this was designed for bodybuilders. So in this case, take your PM pack 30 minutes before eating that last meal and you should be fine. I can get sleeping pills at the local drugstore. Why should I take Animal PM? What's the difference? When it comes to the prescription or OTC sleeping pills, the basic goal is one thing - to knock you out. But at what cost? These meds can be addictive, you can experience withdrawals symptoms, you have to worry about drug interactions, there's a risk for rebound insomnia and most importantly, these drugs mask an underlying problem - why you're not getting good sleep. Basically, sleeping pills are a band aid approach. Let's face it, life is complicated and we treat our complications and stresses with potentially dangerous and addictive medications to keep us going. And are they even gonna help you, a dedicated bodybuilder, grow? Nope, because their sole purpose is to address the symptom and only in the short term. Now if you got some serious sleep issues, you need to talk to your doc. But if not, the good thing about Animal PM is that it's a natural product with various targeted complexes to help bodybuilders sleep better and get more out of their sleep period so that they can recovery/rebuild more efficiently and can actually boost overall health status. Animal PM allows hard trainers to get everything they need in a conveniently dosed pack to maximize their crucial sleep period - it's not just about the length of sleep either, but the quality too. In the big picture, sleep is the real avenue for improved recovery and, ultimately, increased gains. Sleep aides can't help you there but Animal PM will. Why doesn't PM have melatonin in it? Animal PM is a natural supp and contains no hormonal compounds. Melatonin is a hormone. Plus, not everyone requires the same dosage to get the same results. Also, there aren't good studies looking at long-term use of melatonin. As PM is a

The Animal Alpha Testing Program. The Animal nationcomprised of diehard fans and iron warriors, gets collectively pumped when they hear those words. A testing protocol employed when the fellas in Animal R&D develop a new formula that they see as potentially being worthy of the Animal A logo affixed upon the lid. It doesnt happen often, but when it does, man the brothers in the trenches sure as fuck take notice. This time out of the box, the boys at Animal were looking to create a new kind of product. To fill one of the very few gaps in the most comprehensive line in the game with a specialized formula targeted for the very specific needs of hard training athletes. While having a clearly delineated purpose and intent, this product could be used to the benefit of athletes on all levels, both rookie or advanced, those dieting or offseason. A recovery product, yes, but so much more. At Animal, recovery is not a game. Recovery is a matter of gaining or remaining the same Progress versus stagnation. Animal Nitro, your average whey powder or BCAAstheyre all recovery products. But general recovery as a category was all too broad and vague. Animal set out to specifically address the recovery needs of the hardest of trainers living life in the real world, a place where sometimes it is hard to find the time to properly recuperate and recharge the old battery, by honing our focus on that most vital of restorative processessleep. Users lined up from far and wide on the FORVM and from the Bodybuilding.com community to throw their hat in the ring and address one of the most basic deficiencies of all dedicated athletes struggling to make gains and function from day to day in the modern worldrest and recovery. Their mission was simple. Train your ass off, eat and supplement as you usually do and add Project Z to the mix. A pack per day, for thirty days, right before bed time. One simple step, one measly pack. The rest? Business as usual. In all honesty, how much difference could one tiny pack possibly make? According to the select few that were lucky (and brave) enough to step into the breach and run Project Z up the flagpole, it was a month well spent. A month of sound sleep, a month of peaceful rest, a month of fresh new growth. You a stat guy? You want the cold, hard, numeric truth? A staggering 97% of all testers reported better sleep. 83% noticed reduced muscle soreness. 90% observed better overall recovery. That is data you simply cant fuck with. The numbers dont lie. At Animal, however, were about more than crunching figures and beating you in the head with statistics. We know that what matters is what people say and feel. The real shit. The truth, straight from the horses mouth. Fuck how it looks on paper if the brothers in the gym aint really feeling it. Heres what our FORVM and Bodybuilding.com brethren had to say about Project Z. While the numbers speak volumes, the following feedback may just be all you need to hear. Regarding Sleep Quality and Depth of Sleep: Nateakabear05: Sleep is much deeper than without Project Z. I have been having dreams nightly. I am usually a pretty light sleeper, but this is helping a lot. Squattingtillipuke: Anyone that has difficulties getting their sleep, this is definitely something that they need to check into. It reminded me a lot of Flex, where the benefits weren't noticeable immediately but the longer I was on it the more I could feel the impact it was making. Calcaneous: Feeling upon awakeningeven with 5/6 hours of sleep, i felt like i slept 10 hours! Kuclo: Ive noticed when a day if I dont take Project Z I'll wake up several times to use the rest room or change my position. When I do take Project Z I am out cold till I wake up in the morning and my bladder is ready to explode! Littlefry: I must say I have thus been very impressed with Project Z. The rest/deep sleep I have gotten from Z has been amazing to say the least. As well no soreness or notice of DOMs the next day especially after working legs, which was great. Big Al: This product is worth its weight in gold just for the good night sleep you get. And we just know that a good night sleep means youre going to recover faster, feel better and GROW! LittleMan55: Another major observation... I have been unable to get close to even 6 hours of sleep the past few days due to my schedule. In this time I have not felt tired or drowsy. Project Z is allowing me to maximize what little rest I'm getting. Bondons: The first thing I noticed was I was able to fall asleep much faster, as well as have a good sleep! I didn't wake up in the middle of the night tossing and turning, and I felt much more rested when I woke up in the mornings. G Diesel: I felt I slept more efficiently on Z. My sleep was so deep and restful, it made 5 hours feel like a solid 8. I was up and ready to go and train again even when I was on short sleep. Madevilz: If you have trouble sleeping, get Project Z as soon as it is available. You will feel less tired during the day, and will always be ready to hit the gym. Don't underestimate a good night sleep, rest and recovery is the foundation of a great workout. Regarding Recovery and Muscle Soreness: StateChamps10: To be honest, I have to tear the walls down and then some to get sore off this shit... I could go all day on this shit. MaddMike: In regards to muscle sorenessIt seemed like the recovery aspect of it was consistent all the way through the can. Gymgrrrl: I've honestly NEVER recovered as quickly as I have while on this product. I used to gulp down a crap-ton of Glutamine and BCAA's daily and not even notice a difference. However, with PROJECT Z I've noticed I can workout back-to-back days without movement constraints and when I do get sore it subsides in a day rather than three. Also to be mentioned is the fact that I did have an injury during testing and it was the FASTEST healing injury I've ever experienced. I HAVE to believe PROJECT Z had a hand in that. I was literally shocked at my recovery rate.

Rage: Definitely better sleep and shorter recovery times. Hammered back on Saturday and I was already recovered Monday. I'm making this product one of my staples. Little Z: The results from this ATP seriously have already sold this product for you. This is recovery that you can feel. You know once you start taking Project Z, that you will never look back. The House: All I know is the Z has cut my soreness down to about half the time as before. I feel like I can train say arms two days before chest or back and I dont have to worry about them still being sore and messing my workout up. Mritter3: Muscle soreness? 10. So much better than usual. Normally I would be sore 2 days PWO, on Z after the first day it was gone. EDcellent: Recovery was much better than if I was not taking P.Z, you still notice/feel you worked out the next day, but you're able to move around a lot more without getting sore/tired. Having this better recovery allowed to push myself harder and knowing that Ill be able to feel better in the morning, or not as bad as without Z (more so on leg day, haha). Wood.arronj: The day following a lift, I was significantly more recovered than before, and felt fully recovered with about 3 days rest vs. prior to Project Z where I would've needed at least 4 but more like 5 days to recover fully. Skigazzi: I'd say it knocked practically one day off my recovery times. Bondons: My muscles recovered much faster on Project Z. My compound lifts improved during the duration of the product as well. I think mainly due to the recovery. Also, I was hitting much higher reps than before. I always love the products that help you in the gym as well as at home. Should definitely be on any bodybuilders grocery list of supplements. Regarding Endurance and Stamina: E-Train: With endurancewas able to break PRs (example My deadlifts week one 315 X3 turned into week two 315 X8 and then the 3rd week 315 X8 became 315 X12 easily. ) Was also able to do at least two more sets than I normally would with weight I could handle. Big Ant: Z is working good, very good! Again less soreness days after workouts, better recovery, increases REM sleep at night, and even more energy getting up in the morning at 5:00am. Mritter3: Endurance was a 10. There was no slowing me down in the

gym... Powered right thru each and every set... Never felt exhausted. EDcellent: I train for endurance, so this rating is high. As for a difference before/after taking Project Z, cardio seems to be the one to benefit from it. Even when I feel like Im about to slack on the treadmill, I seem to carry on and still have good focus. Lactic acid doesn't seem to be that bad as well when working out. Wood.aaronj: Definitely was able to hit the weights harder than I otherwise would while running Project Z...had some of the best workouts I ever have. Some More General Feedback: Little Z: First off, with this product, you nailed a home run in my books. I have never been one to praise a product so much. Of course I love the entire Animal line and recommend it to anyone who asks for suggestions because I KNOW they will get results, but Project Z blew my mind. Mr. Dead: All in all, an extremely solid product... I'm actually going to be sad, when my run of this is over... A VERY solid product, and one would be crazy not to make it a staple!!! Vinny The Lip: Here is what I have experienced while using ZI sleep way better through the night, and I get out of bed with a clear mind. I'm not groggy, and if I get to bed late and not enough rest....it seems it gives me a sound sleep anyway. My recovery from the gym has improved a great deal also. Overall, this is a product I will always have in my arsenal. Enforcer: What else can I say but the fact that Universal/Animal hit another one out of the park. This product fully works and delivers the results you want. After the product fully worked its way into my system, it was game on. I never felt better after training then I did when using this product. Since I have been off of the product, my soreness levels have def. increased. I train hard all the time, and to have such a solid product that can help with my recovery, I couldnt be happier. This product delivers results, but as I have said many many times before, could you expect anything less from such a great company. Project Z will def. be in my supplement arsenal from here on out. Hands down, Project Z has my full on approval. StateChamps10: Definitely a must have, this stuff is amazing. Not only does it decrease soreness and recovery time, you're ready to eat everything in sight when you wake up. The quality of sleep is excellent....especially if you have a long day coming up. I also felt "fuller" during my workouts. Calcaneous: I love it. I had crazy good sleeps and amazing dreams. I

always woke up feeling very refreshed and charged to hit the weights. I would recommend this product to anyone. I will def. be picking it up once it goes on sale. E-Train: This shit was real, endurance was excellent, and energy levels were high through the whole time while being on Z. I got alot of rest considering that I was following a crazy schedule between the vacation/working/schoolwork. But I managed to do some serious damage and Z helped me recover faster than ever. While on Z I also beefed out few more drop sets than I normally would with no preworkout supp. I think the energy levels were guaranteed to be boosted throughout. But other than that this is some hardcore shit that makes the icing on the cake for any serious lifter looking to speed up that recovery and feel better than ever. Nateakabear05: I have noticed a few cool things about Project Z that have helped my training and recovery. First off, better sleep. I am sleeping deeper and when I have the chance, over longer periods of time. I have also noticed less muscle soreness from my workouts, even with plenty of heavy lifting. I have some crazy dreams when I'm on Project Z also. Project Z ATP Summary To easily condense it all for you we asked the alpha testers to rate their feedback on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being shit and 10 being as good as it gets for the following categories: recovery, sleep, falling asleep, depth of sleep, feeling upon waking up, muscle soreness, energy when awake, stamina, endurance and fatigue. When final data amongst the 40 testers were averaged out and the dust settled, only the truth remained: Recovery: 9.0 Overall sleep: 9.7 Falling asleep: 8.6 Depth of sleep: 9.1 Feeling upon waking up: 8.8 Muscle soreness: 8.3 Energy during day 8.0 Stamina during training 8.2 Endurance during training: 8.3 Fatigue during training: 8.5 You wanted the truth? 99 YOUR JOURNEY SUPPLEMENT FACTS

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal Stak

Schedule:
Animal Pak Animal Stak 1 pack with either breakfast, lunch, or dinner 1 pack 30-45 minutes prior to weight training or cardio. On non-weight training days, take a pack approximately the same time as you would if you were training

Stack #4: The Foundation Stack

Goal:
This foundational Stack gives athletes the basic building blocks. It covers nutritional gaps and protects your joints and ligaments. This stack also provides the essential fatty acids (EFAs) for optimum hormonal levels.

Tips:
With Animal Pak, you not only get a great nutritional foundation, you also get a supplement that makes the Animal Stak (and other supplements) work better. Combined with 4-6 balanced meals per day, this simple double stack will produce nice results in a short period of time. Make sure your body is getting enough quality calories and protein. Remember, calories are the fuel which will drive growth.

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal Flex, Animal Omega

Stack #1: The Natural Lean Mass Stack

Goal:
For serious trainers looking to add maximum mass and strength through non-hormonal means.

Schedule:
Animal Pak 1 pack daily, with breakfast or any other meal Animal Flex 1 pack daily with any meal Animal Omega 1 pack daily with any meal

Stack #3: The Pre-Contest Cutting Stack

Goal:
For elite and competitive bodybuilders seeking to increase striations and vascularity. This triple stack can increase muscle hardness, overall conditioning, and deep cuts. Several cycles can be used consecutively in the weeks of contest prep prior to a show.

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal M-Stak, Animal Pump

Tips:
For maximum results, take your Animal Pak with breakfast (or any other whole food meal). Take Animal Flex with any meal of the day and take a pack of Animal Omega with any meal. Animal Pak will cover your bases with micronutrients while Animal Flex will protect your joints from hard training. Animal Omega supplies you with a balanced, full spectrum, multi-source EFA supplement formulated for bodybuilders.

Schedule:
Animal Pak 1 pack daily with breakfast Animal M-Stak 1 pack daily, 1 hour preworkout Animal Pump 1 pack daily, 30 minutes preworkout

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal Cuts, Animal Nitro

Note:
Both Pump and M-Stak contain caffeine. If a stimulant sensitivity exists, remove the red capsule from the M-Stak formula. If training late in the evening, consider removing the red capsule from both formulas, so as to not disrupt normal sleep patterns.

Schedule:
Animal Pak Animal Cuts Animal Nitro 2 packs daily, with breakfast and dinner 2 packs daily, once in the morning before breakfast and another in the early afternoon, allowing for at least 3-4 hours between each pack 2 packs daily, 30 minutes prior to lifting, within 30 minutes after lifting

Stack #5: The Serious Anabolic Stack

Goal:
Perfect for serious lifters looking to maximize performance and strength. This triple stack is ideal for frequent, heavy lifters who need help reducing recovery times.

Tips:
Maximizing gains on this stack necessitates the handling of heavy weights to failure, coupled with higher rep sets. Be sure to stay hydrated and to consume at least a gram of protein per lb of bodyweight. Consuming a shake combining whey and simple carbohydrates immediately postworkout is also highly recommended.

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal Nitro, Animal Stak

Note:
This plan assumes that you're training in the evening. If you train first thing in the morning, for example, take your Animal Nitro first, followed by an Animal Cuts pack 3-4 hours later, and a second Cuts pack 3-4 hours after that.

Schedule:
Animal Pak Animal Stak Animal Nitro 1 pack daily, with a meal 1 pack 30-45 minutes prior to training 1 pack within 30 minutes after training

Stack #2: The Basic Anabolic Stack

Goal:
This is a basic, minimal stack designed for all intermediate to advanced lifters looking for an anabolic edge. These athletes train hard and eat clean throughout the year. Due to the potent nature of this stack, however, it isn't recommended for all athletes, especially those athletes who are drug-tested or under the age of 18.

Tips:
Drink plenty of water. If doing both weight training and cardio during the same session, always hit the weights first, followed by cardio. Anaerobic activity is fueled by glycogen, and after weight training, the cardio will tap into fat stores more efficiently. When performing cardio, the intensity level should not be too high as entering the anaerobic threshold encourages carb utilization, not fat oxidation.

Tips:
If your training is particularly tough, you can also take a second Animal Nitro packet during the day. We like taking it first thing in the morning in this stack.

Stack #6: The Off-Season Mass Gaining Stack

Goal:
This powerful quadruple stack is perfect for strength athletes looking for quality weight gain in the off-season, those bodybuilders looking to maximize their muscle size, and traditional "hardgainers."

Note:
Since both Stak and Pump are designed as preworkout packs, take Stak 45 minutes before your workout and then follow it 15 minutes later with Pump. It is always a good idea to take Pump closer to your training so as to maximize the effects of the Energy Rush Complex.

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal Stak, Animal M-Stak, Animal Flex

Note:
Such a stack assumes the intake of the necessary whole food calories and protein. Also, a priority must be placed on sleep in order to maximize recuperation.

Schedule:
Animal Pak Animal Stak Animal M-Stak Animal Flex 1 pack daily, with breakfast, lunch, or dinner 1 pack daily, 30-45 minutes prior to training 1 pack daily, 3-4 hours apart from the Animal Stak 1 pack daily with any meal

Tips:
Prioritize taking in mega calories and getting ample rest. Add a gainer shake to breakfast and have another before bed.

Tips:
To optimize the uptake of EAAs, Nitro can be taken immediately postworkout with a source of simple carbs 30 minutes prior to your typical PWO shake. If you utilize a protein shake before bed, allow 30 minutes for digestion prior to taking Animal PM to maximize absorption and efficacy.

Note:
Be sure not to take the Animal Stak at the same time you take the Animal M-Stak. Stagger each. For example, if you train and take the Stak in the morning, take the M-Stak in the afternoon, and vice versa. Flex can be taken at any meal of the day, timing does not make a difference.

Stack #8: The Test Explosion Stack

Goal:
To maximize the output of testosterone and GH through multiple means to allow for dramatic gains in size and strength.

Stack #10: The Raging Pump Stack

Goal:
To facilitate the most intense workouts characterized by seam-tearing pumps and extreme focus and energy.

Tips:
In addition to the above supplement stack, aim for 5-6 meals daily, every 2-3 hours. Include generous helpings of lean red beef, tuna, chicken, pork, and turkey. If you eat clean, you won't need to add any fat because you'll get them naturally from your food. Consume protein with every meal, at least a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. If you want, you can supplement with some essential fats in the form of nuts, safflower oil, natural peanut butter, flaxseed oil, borage oil, or better yet, Animal Omega. Stick to low glycemic index carbs and make sure you get enough of them as glycogen fuels anaerobic training.

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal Test, Animal Stak

Schedule:
Animal Pak: Animal Stak: Animal Test: 1 pack daily, in the AM, with your breakfast meal 1 pack daily, 1 hour before training 1 pack daily, 30 minutes preworkout

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal Pump, Animal Rage

Schedule:
Animal Pak 1 pack daily with breakfast Animal Pump 1 pack 30 minutes before training Animal Rage 1 serving (pack or shot) 20 minutes before training

Tips:
Cycle off with Animal M-Stak so as to maintain muscle mass gained.

Stack #7: The Explosive Gains Stack

Goal:
To add maximum size and strength in a short period of time.

Stack #9: The Ultimate Recovery Stack

Goal:
For the hardest trainers this stack will help optimize recovery from their most brutal workouts.

Tips:
Such a stack assumes the intake of the necessary whole food calories and protein. Also, a priority must be placed on sleep in order to maximize recuperation.

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal Pump, Animal Stak, Animal Nitro

Tips:
To avoid stimulant overload when stacking with Rage, remove the easily identifiable red capsule from Pump. Take Pump and Rage after fully digesting your preworkout meal so as to maximize their potent effects.

Tools:
Animal Pak, Animal Nitro, Animal PM

Schedule:
Animal Pak Animal Stak Animal Pump Animal Nitro 1 pack daily with breakfast 1 pack 45 minutes before training 1 pack 30 minutes before training 1 pack immediately postworkout

Schedule:
Animal Pak: Animal Nitro: Animal PM: 1 pack daily with breakfast 1 pack immediately postworkout 1 pack before bed
