Whats In a Letter/Number (Binary Number Coding)?

Understand place value a) Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. Understand the following as special cases: 10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones called a ten. The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones. The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine tens (and 0 ones).

Content Area: Students will be able to understand the place values for both the Decimal (Base Ten) & Binary (Base Two) number systems. Once this information is obtained, students will be able to use this information to convert letters of the alphabet (giving a Decimal (Base Ten) into a Binary Code (Binary number sequence) 2. Technology: Students will be able to understand the place values for both the Decimal (Base Ten) & Binary (Base Two) number systems. Once this information is obtained, students will be able to use this information to convert letters of the alphabet (giving a Decimal (Base Ten) value) into a Binary Code (Binary number sequence)

Introduce the Learning Activity: Before the lesson begins, the teacher will draw two place value charts on the board; two 2x8 place value charts while the students are passing around a handout of the Alphabet. The teacher will label one chart Decimal (Base Ten) and the other chart Binary (Base Two). There should be room on the side of each chart to have a spot labeled numbers used in Base number system. Students will be asked to give some prior knowledge of what they know about the Decimal (Base Ten)/ Binary number systems. Eventually, the class discussion should have brought up concepts of numbers associated with systems (0,1 for Binary; 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 for Decimal (Base Ten), and also the use of systems (Binary/ Computers and Decimal (Base Ten)/EVERYTHING). Provide Information: The teacher will then begin to direct the classroom attention towards the place value charts. Working together, the teacher and students will begin to place values in the lower half of charts. This will be used as a tool to help students understand the values of numbers and begin the process of conversion from Base Ten to Binary numbers. After working on this, the teacher will then begin to demonstrate the placement of numbers in Decimal (Base Ten) and how to express the value of each number. This information will allow the students to express the same numbers using place values using the Binary number chart. The teacher will then discuss how computers transfer information through the internet (using bits/ bytes & encoding/decoding (A modem is a contraction of modulator/demodulator and converts digital data from computers to analog for phone line transmission). Students will use Alphabet sheets han ded to them to have examples of Decimal (Base Ten) number values associated with each letter from the Alphabet. Provide Practice: The teacher will then ask the students to (through guided practice) demonstrate their understanding of the conversion of Decimal (Base Ten) numbers into Binary through a couple of examples. Once the teacher feels that the class have a strong (or close to it) grasp of the conversion process, the attention will be to the conversion of a letter of the Alphabet into a Binary number. After one example has been giving, the teacher will instruct the students to open up their Excel resource provided from website. Each student will chose any 3 letter word and convert that word into a Binary code (filling in the place value chart provided). Students will Use Think/Pair/Share to discuss with the person next to them; checking their results. Once this is completed and questions/ results have been discussed, teacher will instruct the students to then open the next resource; Cisco Binary Game. Students will play the interactive game (challenge with teacher personal best score with time remaining leaving about 1-2 min left in class).

Provide Knowledge of Results: The teacher will walk around checking each pairs progress with first activity; answering questions if necessary. Once the class has agreed upon completion, the teacher will ask for students feedback and what they thought. This will allow the teacher to answer any questions or concerns. After time is up on the Cisco Binary Game; scores will be discussed. Did anyone take down the CHAMP? The teacher will ask how user friendly each resource was; any difficulties. Review the Activity: The teacher will then gain the attention of the class. The teacher will address some similarities between the number systems; place value and decimal movement (number value shifting left to right). Most review will occur after each activity is performed during lesson practice. Homework assignment will be given and discussed. Each student will convert their full name into a Binary Code. Teacher will also inform the students to place the binary code for space (32 - 00100000 - code for space) between the first and last name. Middle name is not a must but can be used. Method of Assessment: 1. Content Area: A. Homework Assignment- Students will be given a handout to complete at home; requiring them to convert their name into a Binary Code. B. Cisco Binary Game- Students will play interactive game on the computer testing their understanding of both Decimal (Base Ten)/Binary (Base Two) place values and conversions B. Excel Classroom Project- Students will be instructed to write the binary code for a 3 letter word using a excel spreadsheet created
