Formerly Scientific Adviser to Chief of the Naval Staff, Indian Navy Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University C-4, Janak Puri, New Delhi - 110 058 81-88342-78-5/ 2006/Hardback/6.25" 9.5"/700 gm/xviii + 234 pp./Rs. 750.00 Published as part of National Maritime Foundations Maritime Operations Series

The deterrent effect of the very presence of a submarine makes it an attractive first choice for navies around the world. This in turn complicates the task of modern surface fleets and restricts the otherwise unhindered naval operations of extra-regional sea powers in their areas of interest. The burgeoning inventory of submarines with littoral navies merits a closer look at the existing Anti-submarine Warfare (ASW) scenario. The book lays emphasis on the fact that ASW will remain the focus of modern fleet operations and retain its primacy as the core competence of world navies. The nature of threat posed by submarines and existing means of combating them have been discussed. Significant strides in the fields of passive and active sonar technologies, possible due to recent developments in signal processing, have been presented. Additionally, various concepts being explored and the likely performance of futuristic ASW sensors and platforms, and their direct effect on futureASW operations have also been discussed. The book attempts to impart a well-rounded and holistic introduction to the students ofASW. It also provides food for thought for the practicing professionals and indicates the futuristic scenario.
