Cleaning staff will clean the kitchen floors and surfaces and public areas once weekly although not on weekends, public holidays or College closure days. Ensure that you do your own washing up, and wipe down the cookers after using the hobs as cleaning staff will not do this. Do not put food debris, oils or fats down the sinks. This will only serve to block the drains and inconvenience you. Charges for clearing the drains may be passed on to your kitchen. Use the extractor fans provided when cooking. Kitchen doors are fire doors and must not be propped open at any time. Only food belonging to you should be taken from the refrigerators, freezers and kitchen cupboards. Rubbish will be taken out of the kitchens Monday to Friday by the cleaning staff, only if it is put in the bin. All bulky items should be taken to the bin area located inside the gates at the end of Langton Close. At the weekend, public holidays or College Closure days, you are responsible for emptying bins, by taking rubbish to the bin area. Do not let the rubbish build up in your kitchen as this encourages pests. Do not dump your rubbish outside your room, in the corridors, or on the landings or staircases as these are fire escape routes. Rooms and kitchens will be inspected once a term; you will be informed in advance. Toilet Paper Only put toilet paper down the toilet bowl.

Recycling There are recycling facilities in each kitchen. You can recycle paper, glass, plastic bottles and cans. A list of items suitable for recycling can be found on the recycling facilities. All items for recycling must be washed before being recycled. Do not put recyclable items in the kitchen bins. Ensure you recycle any glass jars or bottles separately from the normal rubbish to prevent injury. Cleaning staff will not remove any rubbish bag they think contains glass. There are also recycling facilities inside the gates at the end of Langton Close. Drinking Water Supply All accessible cold tap outlets in Frances Gardner House contain drinking water. Heaters Frances Gardner House is centrally heated. Generally the heating system is switched on in October and off in April. Additional heaters of any sort are not permitted. Windows Window restrictors have been installed for your safety and security; do not dismantle or tamper with them. It is a disciplinary offence to tamper with the window restrictors and you may be subject to a fine. No Smoking The Health Act 2006 prohibits smoking in public places in England. In accordance with the law, smoking is not allowed anywhere in residence. UCL also prohibits smoking immediately outside the entrances or open windows of its buildings. Smoking in prohibited areas is a disciplinary offence and you may be subject to a fine. Fire Alarms The fire alarms are tested every Wednesday between 11:00 and 12:00. If an alarm lasts for more than 1 minute during this period, or during scheduled maintenance of the system, you must evacuate the building. Please note that during a fire alarm you may be fined for not evacuating the building promptly, or for failing to leave the building at all. Fire Safety Please take note of the fire notices and ensure that you are aware of the fire escape routes. On hearing the alarm, you MUST: evacuate the building by the marked fire escape routes immediately do not wait for the lifts as they will be turned off assemble on the pavement opposite the Langton Close office Take care not to accidentally activate heat or smoke detectors. Tips to prevent accidentally activating the alarms: Do not wedge fire doors open. Fire doors, including kitchen doors, must not be propped open at any time to comply with fire regulations. Never leave cooking unattended. If you burn something in the kitchen, open the window and switch the extractor fan on to full. Do not open the kitchen door. Frances Gardner House Additional Information 2013-2014

Do not spray anything such as hairspray or deodorant in the vicinity of the smoke detector, as the detector will think the particles are smoke and activate the alarm. Do not attempt to remove the detector in the hope of disabling them, as this will cause the alarm to go into fault, with your room identified as the culprit. Do not tamper with the door closers, they are a legal requirement. Never use candles/incense/hookah pipes. These items are prohibited in residences. Do not remove the extinguishers from their stands unless you are going to use them to fight a fire. Do not use them to prop doors open. It is a criminal offence to tamper with any fire alarm, extinguishers or any other fire equipment. Do not block fire exits, corridors or cupboards at any time. All bedroom furniture and personal belongings must remain in your room.
Emergency Escape Doors All emergency doors are marked and alarmed. These should only be used in the event of an emergency. Tampering in any way with these doors will lead to disciplinary action and/or a charge being made to all residents of the area concerned.
