INDUS GREEN GOLD PROCUREMENT LIVE PROJECT APPLICATION BY VARUN SRIVATSAN N, FT 14378, PGPM 2013-14
1. Depending on the field of your interest (marketing/ procurement), why would you like to join internship with us?
My name is Varun Srivatsan, a student of the PGPM program from Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai. I am interested in taking Supply chain planning and Operations as a career path. I have prior experience in the Manufacturing sector for 2 years and 9 months. I would like to carry forward the concepts that I learn here at Great Lakes and my prior experience in working with your esteemed firm is addressing their challenges. If we take a companys balance sheet, around 50% of the operating expenses and all costs are due to procurement actions. Procurement is a challenging field, where we need to balance optimum inventory levels without compromising on our budget and quality of input. I have worked in the Quality department of my previous companies and have participated extensively in supplier audits and supplier standards development. I believe that I have a considerable understanding to pursue this project with your esteemed firm. Also, I am a Green Energy enthusiast. This project gives me a chance to enhance my knowledge of the Green Energy industry, and at the same time, it gives me a chance to look at the development of a supply chain, which is a career passion. Hence, with my credentials and my passions and interest, I believe that I am a good candidate for this internship opportunity.

2. What will be your approach to analyse & move further? The challenge in this industry is the supply of large size plots and large number of juliflora plants, to suit our requirements. Since these are wild plants, they are available, but inaccessible.

Existing Sources: As given in the companys profile, our existing sources are large land plots of Private patta land, Government Land and PWD land, where we go and clear the land for their usage. Although this is available in large number today, there are many other untapped sources.

The Challenge: New cost efficient ways to procure Juliflora from small players and big players, to suit our needs and form a strategy for integration of supply chain.

My Proposed Solution: Juliflora grows to a large extent in small areas of our city trenches as well. These are often cleared out frequently by local house labour-hands like maids or gardeners and burnt. I propose that we develop an extra web-portal

and page, offering a nominal price per kg for such collected material. Cities like Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad etc. have a pretty well established network of rag and scrap stores, which collect and sell newspapers. We can contact these stores and make them collection centres for the Juliflora plant from local colonies and localities. Then, we can go on a monthly or weekly collection round, to amass all Juliflora collected at these centres. This collection could be outsourced to a local logistics agency or truck driver, who will collect and deliver to the Indus Green Gold factory campus. There are around 101 localities and divisions in Chennai, with at least 5 scrap stores in each locality. Another addition to this tier of the supply chain is a private chain vendor like Kuppathotti.com, which also collects waste and processes it on a large scale. Since it is a one of a kind vendor, Kuppathotti.com can be added to our vendor list and incorporated into the supply chain. I believe that the three tier setup given below will be a good addition to Indus Green Golds supply chain and a new opportunity.
