2 Desuggestopedia Teaching English English has become in a useful tool for everybody around the world, it is incredible how important it is to know how to speak English in order to convey our ideas since this language is spoken in almost every country. But beyond the fact of speaking this language, in this research we are going to explain one of the many methods that we have for speaking the language which is Desuggestopedia and there are some questions that will be developed.

What is Desuggestopedia? What is Desuggestopedia and its principal principles? What is the role of the teacher and the student in this method? What techniques are involved in this Method? What are the advantages and disadvantages of Desuggestopedia?

Through this research we are going to know what this method is about, how effective it is and how to use it; the questions above are really important because they show us the guidance that we are going to take.

3 Desuggestopedia What is the history of Desuggestopedia?

Desuggestopedia one of the strangest humanistic approaches was developed in the 1970s by the Bulgarian educator Georgi Lozanov. Lozanov believed that learning can occur at a much faster rate than ordinarily transpires. Desuggestopedia was called suggestopedia. This change happened to reflect the importance placed on desuggesting limitation on learning. Desuggestopedia is the application of the study of suggesting and pedagogy which has been developed to help student eliminate the feeling that they cannot be successful. This method helps the student to overcome the negative association they may have toward studying and the barriers to learning. Also, memorization in learning through this approach would be accelerated by up to 25 times over that in conventional learning methods. (Taghreed, 2012)

What is Desuggestopedia and its Principal Principles?

Desuggestopedia has been developed to help students eliminate the feeling that they cannot be successful and the negative association they may have toward studying and, thus, to help them overcome the barriers to learning. (LarsenFreeman, Techniques and Principles of Language Teaching, 2000) This is a method that motivates students to make them lose that feeling of incompetence or incapacity that they cannot speak a specific language in this case English; teachers who use this method help students to get self-confidence that they are capable of communicating using all the knowledge that is blocked by all those barriers that they put on their minds. In order to achieve positive results using this method there are many principles that are very useful; here we have some of them: One of the fundamental principles of this method is the great deal of attention to students feelings .The teacher is the authority in the classroom and student should trust him / her. (Taghreed, 2012) Learning is facilitated in a cheerful environment.

4 Desuggestopedia If students trust and respect the teachers authority, they will accept and retain information better. The teacher is the authority in the classroom, in order for the method to be successful; the students must trust and respect her. Once they trust their teacher they can feel more secure. If they feel secure, they can be more spontaneous and less inhabited. Assuming a new identity enhances students feeling of security and allows them to be more open. They feel less inhabited since their performance is really that a different person. In an atmosphere of play, the conscious attention of the learner does not focus on linguistic forms, but rather on using the language. Learning can be fun. Errors are corrected gently, not in a direct, confrontational manner. (Larsen-Freeman, Techniques and Principles of Language Teaching, 2000)

What is the role of the teacher and the student in this method? The teachers role: Authority. Being confident and trustable. Security. Affording a cheerful classroom atmosphere. The students role: Relaxed. Following the teachers instruction easily Role play.

5 Desuggestopedia Enjoying in the new identity freely.

What are the goals of teachers who use Desuggestopedia? To accelerate the process of learning a foreign language for everyday communication To desuggest learners psychological barriers (Ozlemguner, 2013)

What techniques are involved in this Method?

Classroom set-up The challenge for the teacher is to create an environment which is bright and cheerful. Peripheral learning This technique is based upon the idea that we perceive much more in our environment than that to which we consciously attend. Positive suggestions It is the teachers responsibility to orchestrate the suggestive factors in a learning situation, thereby helping students brake down the barriers to learning that they bring with them. Choose a new identity Students choose a target language name and a new occupation. As the course continues, the students have the opportunity to develop a whole biography about their fictional selves. Role play

6 Desuggestopedia Students are asked to pretend temporarily that they are someone else and to perform in the target language as if they were that person. Techniques and Principles of Language Teaching, 2000) (Larsen-Freeman,

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Desuggestopedia? As any method of teaching a language this method has its own advantages and disadvantages that will be developed below. Advantages Authority concept Students remember best and are most influenced by information coming from an authoritative source, teachers. Double-planedness theory It refers to the learning from two aspects. They are the conscious aspect and the subconscious one. Students can acquire the aim of teaching instruction from both direct instruction and environment in which the teaching takes place Peripheral learning Suggestopedia encourages the students to apply language more independently, take more personal responsibility for their own learning and get more confidence. Peripheral information can also help encourage students to be more experimental, and look to sources other than the teacher for language input. For example, the students can make some sentences using the grammatical structure placed on the classrooms wall, describe a particular place in an English speaking country by looking at the poster on the wall, etc. When the students are successful in doing such self-activities, they will be more confident.

7 Desuggestopedia Disadvantages Environment limitation

Most schools in developing countries have large classes. Each class consists of 30 to 40 students. One of the problems faced in utilizing this method is the number of students in the class. There should be 12 students in the class. Infantilization learning

Suggestopedia class is conditioned be child-like situation. There are some students who do not like to be treated like this as they think that thay are mature. What areas of language are emphasized? -Vocabulary is emphasized. -Grammar is dealt with explicitly but minimally. What language skills are emphasized? -Speaking communicatively is emphasized (Ozlemguner, 2013)

Suggestion for English Teacher Teaching speaking for young language learners using suggestopedia is not easy especially in the countries in which the level of education is still low. It needs a professional and experienced teacher. Very few working teachers are in a position where they can use this system. The teachers should take more training in order to utilize suggestopedia in the classroom. Stated that in conducting Suggestopedia for students, there are some suggestions: (1) Teachers show absolute confidence in the method.

8 Desuggestopedia (2) Teachers display fastidious conduct in manners and dress. (3) Teaches organize properly and strictly observe the initial stages of the teaching process. This includes choice and play of music, as well as punctuality. (4) Teachers maintain a solemn attitude toward the session. (5) Teachers give tests and respond tactfully to poor papers (if any). (6) Stress global rather than analytical attitudes towards material. (7) Teachers maintain a modest enthusiasm. (Suryo, 2009)

Conclusion Summarizing this interesting method we can say that it is very useful in the effective approach of acquiring English because it enhances the speaking skill of students eliminating or tapping those barriers that do not allow them to communicate effectively. By using this method teachers can motivate students to have more self-confidence through many techniques that are really helpful to take out any kind of barrier that students take with them.
