The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was once mandated and formed to protect against the Soviet

threat. The concept of having a committee to represent and foster Western ideals was solidified from its inception in 1949 during a pivotal era in the growth of both the Western Bloc (led by the USA) and the Eastern bloc (led by the Soviet Union). With the Cold War era forgiven as history, NATO has since shifted its focus to the areas of peacekeeping and other military operations worldwide. Throughout its history, NATO has had a hand in nearly every continent and remains a key instrument for the UNs peacekeeping endeavors. This year, the committee is set in 2020. NATO continues to be a preeminent force within the world standing as adjudicators and defenders of democracy and justice. In recent years, as diplomatic ties have weakened and thinned NATO, they have become more proactive in utilizing their prominent military strength to maintain order and peace within the world. With its 33 members dedicated to NATO initiatives and causes, NATO remains as one of the most influential multinational blocs on the planet. The topic that will be discussed on this occasion will be Assuring the presence of NATO in the Korean republics in the year 2020. General Background In 2014 many nations which had yet to recover from the 2008 economic crisis have fallen into large debts with other nations, and their economies collapse, which began pulling many western economies down too. This caused many nations to break apart from western globalization. At the same time, China had caught up to the US as the greatest economic power and had aided Russia to reach a similar position. Through the 2014 crisis, China remained strong and kept growing. Due to this, many nations which abandoned the west began rushing to join with China and Russia which increased Asian influence. This prompted even more nations to join them. The western countries quickly managed to recover by collectively bailing out each other and rose to prominence once more. But by this time, the world had begun creating two different

power blocks, both looking to reclaim old allies and strategic areas of power. While at the same time, the UN slowly but consistently lost its influence and power throughout the globe and began being replaced by NATO and the SCO which had become global opposing organizations. NATO Background NATOs essential purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of its members through political and military means. NATO promotes democratic values and encourages consultation and cooperation on defense and security issues to build trust and, in the long run, prevent conflict. NATO is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. If diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military capacity needed to undertake crisis-management operations. These are carried out under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty - NATOs founding treaty - or under a UN mandate, alone or in cooperation with other countries and international organizations. NATO is committed to the principle that an attack against one or several members is considered as an attack against all. This is the principle of collective defense, which is enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. NATO is an alliance of countries from Europe and North America. It provides a unique link between these two continents for consultation and cooperation in the field of defense and security, and the conduct of multinational crisis-management operations. Strategic Concepts lay down the Alliances core tasks and principles, its values, the evolving security environment and the Alliances strategic objectives for the next decade. The 2010 Strategic Concept defines NATOs cores tasks as: collective defense, crisis-management and cooperative security. With the fall of the United Nations over the years the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has begun to grown its council members as well as its power across the globe, it has played an important role in many situations consisting the east the in the attempt to maintain order and peace. Topic Background In July 27, 2016 North Korea began mobilizing their troops towards the border. As a direct response to this, South Korean forces mobilized as well and asked for the aid of NATO. But the SCO publicly announced that if there was any intervention by NATO forces they would also interfere in the conflict. This caused both groups to remain neutral and both Korean nations to order their armies to remain at the border and attack only if the enemy initiated the conflict. In May 13, 2017 the North Korean army launched surprise amphibian attacks on the cities of Incheon and Ansan, both of which are located near the South Korean capital of Seoul. At the same time all forces stationed at the border launched a full scale attack on the South Korean army. The South Korean army was forced to retreat so they could repel the amphibian attacks and protect their capital. Meanwhile, the South Korean leaders left the city and fall back to the southern tip of the nation for safety. On May 30, 2017 the city of Seoul was taken by the North Korean army and raised to the ground. NATO decided to intervene and used the destruction of Seoul as an excuse to enter the conflict while forcing the SCO to remain neutral. NATO forces launched simultaneous attacks on the North Korean army and various cities. On July 3, 2017 the entire North Korean fleet was destroyed and the South Korean army, aided by NATO troops, retook their capital and began pushing the invading army back to their country. By July 15, 2017 all of North Koreas borders had been taken and the army and was

forced to make a last stand in Pyongyang where their leaders were entrenched since there was no way to escape. On July 19, 2017 a bomb fell on the bunker where the North Korean government was hidden and wiped them out. Later that day the army negotiated an unconditional peace with NATO and the country officially surrendered. North Korea was allowed to remain separate from South Korea but a NATO appointed government was put in place, US military bases were placed all over the country and NATO forces remained stationed in the country. Both North Korea and South Korea effectively became US satellite states, which caused much unrest within the North Korean population and the SCO. On April 7, 2018 Taiwan became engaged in a military conflict against NATO, and North Korea began to be used as a base to launch attacks on Taiwan, which quickly ended the conflict. Due to this, the SCO saw the occupation of North Korea as a threat and as base for NATOs direct interference in Asia. And a few days later the SCO publicly announced that they demanded the withdrawal of NATO troops from the region by May 7, 2020 or military measured would be considered. Tensions continued escalating and members from both groups began to prepare for any military conflict that could take place. Military Power Both groups have immense military capacity. Since all member states share technological and military advances, the 2 organizations have cutting edge technology. New nuclear weapons have not been invented, since they can only be used as deterrents and would assure the destruction of both belligerents. Because of this, efforts have been invested in developing new vehicles and weapons with which to overcome enemy forces. The SCO and NATO have an almost equal strength and they have troops stationed all over their member countries. And both have an extremely large and powerful navy.

With the development of new vehicles, warfare has become even faster. Combined arms warfare is still in use, which mean all branches of the military are involved in most engagements. Each member nation from both groups still has control over its own armies and their countrys military decisions. Naval Influence The seas are now mostly controlled by NATO or the SCO. The North Pacific and Indian Oceans, except for areas near the coasts of NATO territories and members, is completely dominated by the SCO. They maintain a very large presence. The North Atlantic Ocean is under NATO control the SCO only has influence in the areas close to Russia, and even though it is a limited presence, it restrains NATO from controlling all of Europes and northern Asias seas. The South Pacific and South Atlantic are still in the balance since neither group has naval bases in South America or Africa. And countries from those 2 continents have yet to join either group. In the South Atlantic areas near the Philippines and Australia there is a mixed presence. Despite the fact that Australia is not a NATO member, it has NATO naval bases. Espionage With the invention of new technology, spying has become extremely fruitful, often providing a lot of useful information. But it has become a very risky endeavor since the very same technology used for espionage allows nations to discover with greater ease when theyre being spied on.
