NDVM - Non Disruptive Volume Movement - DataMotion for Volumes (vol move)
What it is and what it can do (can not)? It allows you to nondisruptively migrate a volume from one aggregate to another on a single storage controller (you cant move volumes between the two different controllers that make up an HA pair). 1. Supported in Data ONTAP 8.0.1 running in 7-Mode. 2. Facilitate migration of any volume containing FC, FCoE, or iSCSI LUNs only. It does not support NFS or CIFS volumes. What are its advantages and limitations? A key benefits of DataMotion for Volumes are It maintains all the details associated with a volume after the migration, including: Snapshots and snapshot schedules SnapMirror, SnapVault, and MetroCluster relationships Thin provisioning settings Deduplication state (a rescan is necessary to reestablish the fingerprint database in the new location) You can move data between all types of media connected to your storage controller. For instance, you can move data from an aggregate containing FC or SAS disks to one consisting of SATA disks or vice versa.

How it works? DataMotion for Volumes leverages proven NetApp SnapMirror technology for volume migration. Knowing a little bit about how the process works can help enable success. A migration occurs in three phases: Setup Data copy Cutover In the setup and data copy phases, the source volume continues to serve I/O requests without interruption.

LUN alignment http://danieladeniji.wordpress.com/2012/12/13/netapp-lun-aligning/ > priv set diag > lun show -m > lun alignment show <lun-name> > lun config_check -v TPG(Target portal group) A target portal group is a set of one or more storage system network interfaces that can be used for an iSCSI session between an initiator and a target. A target portal group is identified by a name and a numeric tag. If you want to have multiple connections per session across more than one interface for performance and reliability reasons, then you must use target portal groups. VMW_SATP_ALUA (SATP) with Round Robin MPIO policy VMW_SATP_DEFAULT_AA (SATP) with Fixed MPIO > iscsi tpgroup alua show > iscsi tpgroup alua set <tpgroup name> { optimized | nonoptimized } [preferred] Note:- ALUA and iSCSI don't work together. Portset When you map a LUN to a Fibre Channel igroup, the LUN is available on all of the storage system's FCP target ports if the igroup is not bound to a port set. A port set consists of a group of FCP target ports. By binding a port set to an igroup, you make the LUN available on a subset of the systems target ports. Any host in the igroup can access the LUNs only by connecting to the target ports in the port set. You define port sets for FCP target ports only. You do not use port sets for iSCSI target ports. If you do not bind an igroup to a port set, and you map a LUN to the igroup, then the initiators in the igroup can access the LUN on any port on the storage system. > igroup bind igroup_name portset_name > portset show >portset create { -f | -i } portset_name [ port ... ]

Creates a new portset.

If the -f option is given, an FCP portset is created. If the -i option is given, an iSCSI portset is created. NOTE: currently only FCP portsets are supported.

The maximum length of the portset_name string is 95 characters. All printable ASCII characters are permitted.

If the port string is specified in the filername:slotletter format then only that specific port will be added to the portset. The example myfiler:9a shows this syntax. If the port string is specified by only the slotletter format, then both the local and partner ports will be added to the portset. The example 9a shows this syntax.
