Abstract ABSTRACT

Ardhabilva Kvatha Curna (ARD), is an Ayurvedic preparation which is used in constipation in the traditional medicine. This Ayurvedic preparation was administered chronically to the male and female rats to explore the toxicological characteristics of this preparation. After the chronic administration of ARD preparation for a period of 45 days, the following biochemical content in the plasma in both the male and female rat groups were determined. The total protein content in the plasma was increased in the ARD treated male rats. The result showed no significant difference between the control and the ARD treated groups. But the albumin content was very highly significantly (p=0.001) increased (20.49%) in ARD treated male rats. In the female rats group both the total protein and the albumin content in the plasma were increased in comparison to their control groups. A statistically very highly significant (p=0.001) increase was noted (5.75%) only in the case of albumin. In this investigation a very highly significant (p=0.001) decrease of plasma Triglyceride level in the ARD treated male rats was observed in comparison to the corresponding control. After chronic administration of the traditional medicine the Triglyceride level was 45.25 % decreased in the male rat group. But No remarkable changes were found in case of the Total cholesterol (1.33 decr %), VLDL (4.70 decr %), LDL (5.62 incr %) and HDL (0.27 decr %) in comparison to the corresponding control values in the male rats. In the female rats statistically very highly significant (p=0.001) decrease in the Triglyceride content in the plasma was exhibited. Here the test medicine also decreased the Triglyceride level by 48.11% in the female rats group. On the contrary an increase in the Total cholesterol (2.82 % incr), VLDL (3.83 % incr), LDL (10.40 % incr) and HDL (1.56 % incr) content in the plasma was insignificant in comparison to the control group. After chronic administration of ARD to the male rats a statistically significant (p<0.001) decrease of bilirubin level (50.15% decr) in the plasma was noted in comparison to their control group. After chronic administration of ARD to the female rats a statistically significant (p<0.001) decrease of bilirubin level (27.86 % decr) in the plasma was noted in comparison to their control group. There was a decrease in both the Creatinine and the Urea content in the plasma in the ARD treated male rats. In case of Creatinine the decrease was statistically very highly significant (14.25%) and in case of Urea though the decrease was not statistically significant (2.87%) yet it was noticeable (p=0.093). A statistically very highly significant (p<0.001) with 11.04% decrease was noted in the case of creatinine content of that ARD treated female rats. Also the result exhibited significant decease in urea content (though only 3.59?%) in female rat groups. In the male rats there was a statistically insignificant decrease (3.99 % decr) in the Uric acid content in the plasma. In the female rats there was a statistically significant increase (15.80 % incr) in the Uric acid content in the plasma. In the male rats there was a statistically significant (p=0.028) increase (0.40%) in the sGPT activities in the plasma. None of the other changes in case of the sGOT and ALP activities in the plasma were significantly different from their corresponding control values. In the female rats there was a statistically significant (p=0.008) increase in the sGPT and sGOT activities in the plasma. In case of sGPT the increase was statistically highly significant, and in case of sGOT the increase was statistically significant. The decrease in ALP activities in the plasma, were not significantly different from their corresponding control values.
