The following represents the most recent data available regarding victims of the
September terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (figures are subject to
revision):
On Tuesday, December 3rd, it was announced the NYPD plans to assist the Justice
Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in interviewing dozens of
immigrants being probed in the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade
Center and the Pentagon. The Bush administration announced it intends as part of its
terrorist investigation to question 5,000 immigrants, most of them Muslims, who
entered the United States since January 2000. One hundred twenty-seven people are
on the list to be handled by the United States Attorney's Offices in Manhattan and
Brooklyn. Investigators from this Department will handle the interviews of eighty-six
people in New York City. The interviews, which could begin as early as this week,
have sparked concern by New York's Arab and Muslim communities as well as by
the New York Civil Liberties Union who consider the investigation a "fishing
expedition." Attorney General John Ashcroft stated the objective of the interviews is
to "collect any information the individuals on this list may have regarding terrorist
elements in this country and abroad." Investigators have been advised to ask the
immigrants if they have ever been to Afghanistan, received terrorist training and if
they are familiar with explosives, harmless chemicals or anthrax and also if they are
aware of any suspicious activity.
