Vice-Ganda incurs ire for being a bully Delicadeza Shooting An Elephant Rainbow Cats Part 1 Contextual Factors in Written Genres

VICE-GANDA INCURS IRE FOR BEING A BULLY 1. The article depicts how a celebrity comedian, Vice-Ganda has gone a little too overboard with his jokes. 2. The journalist speaks to the mass of Filipinos, willing them to see through Vice-Gandas act of comedy, and into the reality of being an adult bully. Your audience can still be entertained with jokes not meant to harm others, and the author thinks it is about time comedians learn this. Evidences are cited below: Its about time that somebody put Vice Ganda in place for cracking cruel jokes against celebrities. Jokes are supposed to entertain and not never! to hurt or offend anybody, not even celebrities. 3. The author is openly against the unfazed ridicules of Vice-Ganda, the comedians perception of entertainment appearsgasp!not entertaining to those whom the jokes were directed to. The article shows repulsion against those who make fun of others for amusement. Patronizing mean jokes is just as bad as making them, we need to stop witticisms against people. For who knows, maybe the next joke made will be about us. The following passages will show you the authors tone and mood regarding the topic: Paragraph 2, First line On his recent Big Dome show, as he continues to do so on his ABS-CBN show Its Showtime, he continued making fun (sorry, but its not funny anymore!) of newly-elected Sen. Nancy Binay. Paragraph 6 The height of cruelty and vulgarity, isnt it? Paragraph 11 Of course, Jessica is hurtingvery badly! Paragraph 14 The horrors they go through are unspeakable and should never be taken lightly, especially by way of a cruel joke. 4. The author used the journalistic style of writing, wherein all messages to be conveyed are delivered straightforwardly. 5. The journalistic article was written purposely to inform readers about a laughing matter getting out of hand; it is an example of expository writing.

2 6. Pathos was used as evidence in this article, further supported by facts. The authors context of words had an emotional appeal effectively persuading the readers onto her side. 7. The author used a third person view, conveying her reactions as a fellow Filipino citizen to the criticisms of vice. Exuding the aura of a friend relaying her vengeance about the newest celebrity gossip, the author indeed piqued my attention. 8. What social value (or any valuepolitical, religious, family, media, medical, etc) was communicated, if any? Identify them and give evidence based on the text. I think the authors message to everyone is to be careful in what you say. There may be times where we might unintentionally hurt someone despite of our innocent motives. Think of possible outcomes when you voice something, and if either one is negative, it is better not to express it at all. Remember, with great power, comes great responsibility. And communication is indeed a powerful device, but when used through wrong means, it can destroy. Now described as vicious, this Vice has been relentlessly maligning people and that he has ceased to be amusing; he has gone overboard Rape is not a joke and should never be material for a comedy concert. The horrors they go through are unspeakable and should never be taken lightly, especially by way of a cruel joke. DELICADEZA 1. The author talks about the once valued trait posessed by a government official called delicadeza, implying on how it is lost in the sea of dishonest politician nowadays. 2. The article was written to inform Filipinos regarding the anomaly of our officials, indicating their actions as a lack of delicadeza. He wants us readers to be aware of the possibility to have an uncorrupt government, being the so-called delicadeza as the only thing needed to attain the unattainable. To serve as an evidence that the author is indeed talking to his co-Filipinos, here are some passages: But in our Filipino culture, it has been given a nobler meaning associated with holding a public office or position of authority and trust.-The word Filipino was directly stated in the sentence. Even the highest officials of our land have lost it or have chosen to ignore it. In 2001, when past president Erap Estrada was impeached, he could have averted EDSA II by voluntary stepping down when damning evidence about his Jose Velarde accounts were exposed.-Here, the phrase official of our land partains to president Erap of the Philipiines in the next sentence, therefore our serves as a pronoun for Filipinos. 3. Though the article appearing in a newspaper, it apperas to be only semi neutral, there were still certain texts where the author gaveaway his side regarding the issues. It could not be denied that the writer values the importance of delicadeza, in which he sees great hope for the banishment of corruption alongwith the rising of the lost trait once again. He believes that if only delicadeza was still alive in our races veins, certain scandals and catastrophes would have been prevented. The mood and tone can be further testified on the writers usage of words on the following examples: Paragraph 1, Line 5 He would be more credible if he and his people would talk less and just work quietly towards his goal. Paragraph 3, Line 1

3 Most menacing among them is something that our current crop of public officials, . . . . because they do not comprehend, or do not believe that public office is a public trust. Paragraph 6, Line 6 Then he should have been more sensitive to the current public perception . . . . A strong sense of delicadeza should have forced him to resign or at least go on leave. Paragraph 7, Line 2 Delicadeza should have dictated her to at least express some reservations against testifying because her motives will be suspect especially when the data she obtained are still raw and unverified. 4. The author connected the idea with a forgotten trait, spicing the whole article with the relevant trivia making it not just your typical breakdown of opinion for politics. 5. It is an example of a expository writng. 6. Paragraph Number 1 Contextual Function Introducer -The paragraph introduces the topic by stating PNoys performance as a president Developer -The paragraph continues the previous topic by stating the problems to be overcome by PNoy Extender -Extends the developers topic by specifying the problem Amplifier -Extends the previous topic by defining delicadeza Introducer -Introduces another topic by reminiscing when delicadeza was still valued Developer -Continues the given topic with the fading of delicadeza and its impact on the present government Extender -Supports the stated topic by giving concrete examples Extender -Still providing examples of Main Ideas (1) The vision of PNoy for our country is easier said than done (1) There will be problems encountered that should be acknowledged by our President to fulfill his promise (1) The root cause and at the same time, the worst problem of all is the government officials lack of delicadeza (1) Filipinos treated delicadeza as a title paired with an honorable official who serves people unconditionally (1) Due to delicadeza, corrupt officials willingly step down on their position with shame and humility (1) High officials included, delicadeza is almost nonexistent nowadays. Take the refusals of Erap and Gloria to let go of the position amidst scandals. (1) If CJ Corona had the delicadeza to refuse GMAs request for appointment, or to willingly resign, controversies could have been avoided (1) Other evidences show that the government is careless, Overall rhetorical move of the main idea Affirming/Narrating

7. The author used factual information and the undeniable truth of what is happening within our government to back up his thesis. 8. A second person view was used since no personal pronouns were used in the article. The writer probably wanted the reader to formulate his/her own view towards the topic based on the facts given, not because they were completely influenced by the authors feelings. 9. The value stressed in this article is delicadeza, a trait once possesed by politicians. It illustrates the drastic change of our government with its transtition from almost non-existent up to its independence. The following are provided to further prove my inference: Paragraph 3, Last line Gone are the days indeed when public officials still had that sense of delicadeza while holding office. Paragraph 4, Last line . . . it is more honorable to resign and relinquish their position than to hold on to it; or when doubts arise about their objectiveness and impartiality on certain matters they are called upon to decide, affirm or deny, they should inhibit themselves from doing so. Paragraph 6, Lines 1-2 But after the war when we gained independence, this virtue gradually faded from the consciousness of our officials until it has been almost completely forgotten nowadays. Even the highest officials of our land have lost it or have chosen to ignore it. SHOOTING AN ELEPHANT 1. It narrates the story of an English officers experience of shooting an elephant set in the time of British imperialism. 2. The article is for a general audience, preferably for those who think critically. Everyone, regardless of their nationality, age, or gender has experienced doing something entirely different from what they wanted to do because of peerwell in this casecrowd pressure. The author wanted to depict a moment wherein an inner battle to choose the appropriate path or to give in to pressure came. Possibly, he wanted the readers to take his experience as a lesson in which we, as a new generation known to have experience with pressure, not to imitate. Following passages support my inference: And suddenly I realized that I should have to shoot the elephant after all. The people expected it of me and I had got to do it

5 Here was I, the white man with his gun, standing in front of the unarmed native crowd seemingly the leading actor of the piece; but in reality I was only an absurd puppet pushed to and fro by the will of those yellow faces behind. The crowd would laugh at me. And my whole life, every white man's life in the East, was one long struggle not to be laughed at. I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool. 3. The overall approach of the author towards the topic is negative. He sees beyond the faade of oppressors, and regrets having committed the same mistake and behaving like one. The following texts are given to support the statement: Paragraph 2, Line 8 I was young and ill-educated and I had had to think out my problems in the utter silence that is imposed on every Englishman in the East. Paragraph 2, Line 10 All I knew was that I was stuck between my hatred of the empire I served and my rage against the evil-spirited little beasts who tried to make my job impossible. Paragraph 7, Lines 12-14 For it is the condition of his rule that he shall spend his life in trying to impress the "natives," and so in every crisis he has got to do what the "natives" expect of him. He wears a mask, and his face grows to fit it. I had got to shoot the elephant. Paragraph 9, Lines 9-11 The sole thought in my mind was that if anything went wrong those two thousand Burmans would see me pursued, caught, trampled on and reduced to a grinning corpse like that Indian up the hill. And if that happened it was quite probable that some of them would laugh. That would never do. 4. The authors use of vivid details in depicting his story made the readers think his thoughts and feel his emotions. It was a very effective style he used. 5. Since it was an article with the recount of consecutive events, it is under narrative writing. 6. Truth value was very much needed in this article to support his statements. Narration of his exact thoughts and feelings made the whole experience believable and credible. 7. Being a personal essay, it was retold on the authors point of view. As mentioned earlier, it was an effective way in luring and entertaining the audience, leaving nothing unsaid satisfied the readers with an amazing retell of the story. 8. It tells the society not to give in to your own lifes oppressor and pressure. Nowadays, we have bullies and bad influences from our friends. The authors message to everyone is this: Stand for your own choices, or let others do it for you. Following evidences from the article are cited: I was hated by large numbers of people the only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to happen to me.

6 They had not shown much interest in the elephant when he was merely ravaging their homes, but it was different now that he was going to be shot. It was a bit of fun to them, as it would be to an English crowd As soon as I saw the elephant I knew with perfect certainty that I ought not to shoot him. They did not like me, but with the magical rifle in my hands I was momentarily worth watching. the younger men said it was a damn shame to shoot an elephant for killing a coolie, because an elephant was worth more than any damn Coringhee coolie. And afterwards I was very glad that the coolie had been killed RAINBOW CATS Answers: 1. The article accounts the honest truth about the irrelevance of a cat to present society. 2. The author is generally addressing the society in this article. A reader can tell based on the following passages, Does President Noynoy Aquino know that the Philippines has lost one of the contributors of oxygen in the atmosphere? Do the Taiwanese know that they should also be protesting the unjustified killing of this cat? Does the Department of Environment and Natural Resources know that someone has killed a cat without permission? Does the National Bureau of Investigation know that somewhere in my peaceful village lurks a murderer? Where are the media? Wheres Vice Ganda? Wheres the woman screaming for redemption? Maybe one day, the government and society will transform into PutiCats. that the article is intended for anyone who will listen or specifically, for anyone who cares. Also, the writer directly addressed big personas embodying the different individuals within our society, making it clear who the target audience is. The purpose of the article is to serve as an eye opener for the readers, and make us ponder on the existence of the things we take for grantedlike cats. And if one will look closer, you can infer the authors hidden message that humans nowadays are uncaring and self-absorbed, giving us a hint that we must learn to appreciate other beings. 3. The author feels negatively with how the life and death of a cat goes by unnoticed. More disgusted than disturbed with the idea of activities going on and people unaware of a life ended by a crime, she used words like grotesque, ugly, putrefying, unjustified, and plagued, to stress the mood of the article. To further concretize my point, the following texts are given: Paragraph 2, Lines 3-4 There, in the middle of the street, is a flattened corpse. This may sound disturbing, hence I shall use a simple adjective to describe the grotesque sight: ugly. Paragraph 3, Lines 4-8 But, I wonder, do the newly elected senators know that this poor cat is putrefying in public? Does President Noynoy Aquino know that the Philippines has lost one of the contributors of oxygen in the atmosphere? Do the Taiwanese know that they should also be protesting the unjustified killing of this cat? Does the Department of Environment and Natural Resources know that someone has killed a cat without permission? Does the National Bureau of Investigation know that somewhere in my peaceful village lurks a murderer? Where are the media? Wheres Vice Ganda? Wheres the woman screaming for redemption? Entire Paragraph 5 I proceed to my math class and am plagued by thoughts of the cat the whole time. I go home feeling typically forlorn because of my lack of mathematical prowess. There I am, slumping like a fool, feeling bitter toward my parents for the absence of math genes in their passed-on chromosomes, blaming meiosis, the education system, the world, when I see the dead cat again.

7 Paragraph 13, Lines 1-2 In conclusion, no one cares. No one cares for some nobody cat. 4. The author made use of figurative languages to relate the article to a wide range of people belonging to diverse social and intellectual groups. 5. It is a narrative essay describing the blow by blow scenes and emotions going on within the authors mind. 6. Since the article is under creative writing, according to Aristotelean Rhetoric, it uses pathos as an evidence. Emotions were used to concretize the thesis statement since the whole story was all based on experience. 7. The narrator is talking about her own experience meaning, it is in a first person view. And as for the effectiveness, I would say that the authors purpose of writing this article was fulfilled. Recalling the events in her view made it easier for the readers to know the emotions and be able to live the experience instead of just witnessing it. 8. The social value stressedor in this case, the lack of itis partaining to those with great power in the community. In these examples: But, of course, the killer will never be found. The police will never care. The government wont even spare my 20-page report a glance. At best, I will probably be referred to the Cat Adoption Center, or the mental ward if I become too persistent. I saw a metaphor of death. Like the death of Gregor Samsa in Metamorphosis, no one will care, not Loren Legarda, not the President, not even my idol Vice Ganda. Maybe its because everyone has gotten so used to them around, that their very existence is forgotten. it just further proves that the community will only initiate something if it benfits them directly, if it will make their reputation better. Part 2 Diction and Levels of Meaning The author used plenty of figurative languages as her style to describe the experience she had in this article. I would be lying if I would say that I was not entertained and was not pushed to finish reading the entirety of itand I think it is safe to say that so were the other readers. Maybe it was the way she conveyed her story in a detailed manner, carefully so as not to skip out on even one emotion. Meaning for us to understand how she felt that fateful day, to see and to reminisce the scenes in her eyes. For the readers to live the unique experience only the author had, the following allusions were written: There I am, slumping like a fool, feeling bitter toward my parents for the absence of math genes in their passed-on chromosomes, blaming meiosis, the education system, the world, when I see the dead cat again., The first will have to be the death of Mufasa due to Scars betrayal. The second is Sakuragi Hanamichis epic basketball fail in the first or second episode of Slam Dunk., I feel like Eliza in the old cartoon The Wild Thornberrysyou know, the one who can talk to animals. These lines reflect the authors persona and attitude on how she sees things, gives us a view in who she is as a person. Leaving us with little trivia questions like: what life problems does she have, was she good at biology, what movies and cartoons did she watch as a kid, and the like. These things were the aid on how she managed to convey a brilliant essay that was used to bring out the right mood, theme and values of the article. Another Figurative language is imagery Maybe PutiCat is the dead cats close friend, and they shared secrets, talked about girls or DOTA or LoL, teasing each other. pinpointing that the existence of cats are not m erely for eating and sleeping. Maybe there is a whole other world we did not know of and cats and dogs can communicate and befriend each other. Further proving that society is too self absorbed in its own problems to study the life of a meaningless creature. Following the previous example, Even worse, if they are both male, maybe homosexuality is looked down upon by the Cat society. Maybe he is the dead cats lover or paramour, and they had an adulterous relationship. With this, the author is determining the possible similarities of our environ and at the same time, criticizing it. It also leaves a lingering question in our minds about the structure of our societyof who has the right to say what is wrong and what is right.

8 Another text, And as I do, I cant help but want to be the furious father whos intent on finding his kidnapped daughter. I want to phone the cats killer and say huskily, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you. But, of course, the killer will never be found. The police will never care. The government wont even spare my 20-page report a glance. At best, I will probably be referred to the Cat Adoption Center, or the mental ward if I become too persistent. which relates it to a movie and concretizes the hatred the writer feels when she realizes that no one will ever give her case a second glance. Implying that good people nowadays and their deeds are being trampled upon to make everybody elses look good. Based on the given text, Maybe one day, the government and society will transform into PutiCats. So that all the cats in the Philippines can lick each others wounds, say Hey, hows life? and check if anothers still alive. Maybe one day, we can all become Cat Whisperers and say goodbye to our own Richard Parker. It tells us that what is needed for us is to be humans, and enjoy, and be content with who we are so that we can truly ask if someone is okay without agendas of our own and later, bid them a fond farewell. Likewise, when our time comes, we would be able leave this place and say that we have lived a fair life. Part 3 Reading Skills DELICADEZA The transition of Philippine government officials from being noteworthy to fraudulent. I. Characteristic of Public officials before independence was granted. A. Government employees possessed a trait called delicadeza which was a basis for honor and integrity. B. Officials with possibility of executing graft or corruption immediately resigned. C. C. Lack of delicadeza made GMA to continue her sovereignty despite the Hello Garci scandal D. CJ corona does not have the delicadeza to resign when plausible rumors about his clandestine meeting with GMA got out. E. Selfish act of Ombudsman Carpio testifying against Corona while her refute is inexistent shows how desperate she is for power. F. Officials nowadays are more concerned with their title than with the needs of masses and the peoples approval regarding issues. III. Current state of the Country and Government under PNoy A. As a start for attaining his vision, President Noynoy must start addressing these hindrances, stop tolerating dishonesty, and pursue the resurgence of delicadeza within our government.

9 1. Paraphrase the entire paragraph 4 of Delicadeza. Delicadeza, a filipinized word mostly linked with noble politicians, came from a Spanish descent meaning delicateness, fineness or tact, or showing regard for the feelings of others, or sensitive in action or operation. This old valued trait dictates that it is better to step down and surrender ones position when faced in an event of indiscretion of work ethics showing your indecency towards the people. But if situated in the best case scenario, where the incident is still under the verification process, it is best not to assert or rebuff ones case. 2. Prcis of paragraphs 1 to 3 of Delicadeza The Filipino word delicadeza originally came from the Spanish meaning delicate, finesse and sensitivity to others. In our culture, it is closely connected with honorable politicians, being the reason of their willingness to resign when proven guilty and be silent if otherwise. Most Filipino officials before World War II had delicadeza and truly believed that the masses were his boss. It was not only after the granting of Philippine Independence that the value of delicadeza came spiraling down and eventually disappeared.
