Reusable Cotton Market Bag


By Jill Chatelain Size: 14 wide 15 tall Materials: Sugar n Cream worsted weight cotton 3 balls (375 yds total) H (5.0mm) Crochet Hook Tapestry Needle Large Button Directions: Base: Make 46 st chain. Starting at 2nd chain from hook, sc across chain (45 sc) Rows 2-11: Working back and forth work sc rows for 10 more rows. Row 12: Turn. Work across 44 sc. On 45th sc, work 3 sc to turn corner. Sc across end of rows (10 sc). Turn corner (3 sc in next sc). Sc across the beginning chain row to last chain (44st). Turn corner (3 sc in last chain) sc across end of rows (9 sc). Turn corner (3sc). Connect to first sc with slip stitch. (118 sts total) Row 13: Repeat row 12 working each side to last sc and work turn corner at each corner sc). (126 sts) Body: Row 1: Ch 3. *skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, Ch 1* repeat around. Join with sl st to 2nd ch st. (63 dc including ch 3 at beginning) Row 2 19: sl st in space before next dc. Ch 3. *dc in next ch1 space, ch 1* repeat around. Join with sl st to 2nd ch st. Note: the beginning of each round will appear to travel diagonally up the bag as you crochet this is normal. Row 20: ch 1. Work one sc in each dc and each ch of previous row. Join at end with sl st in top of first sc. Row 21: ch 2. Work one dc in each sc of previous row. Join at end with sl st to 2 nd ch of beginning. Row 22: ch 1. Work one sc in each dc of previous row. Join at end with sl st in top of first sc. Row 23: repeat row 1 Row 24: repeat row 2 Row 25 -27: repeat row 20 22 End. Handles (make 2): Make 71 st chain. Leave a long tail to use to sew handle to bag. Row 1: sc into back loop of 2nd ch from hook. Repeat across chain (70 sc). Turn. Row2 - 4: ch1. Sc into each sc across. End leaving a long tail to use to sew handle on bag. Note: After several people have made this bag a few handle changes have been made. Above is the original pattern. Option #1: Some people decided the handles are too long and the bag can drag on the ground when filled with items. If you want a shorter handle, make a chain of 51 sts instead of 71sts. Button Loop: Make 20 st chain. Leave a long tail to use to sew loop to bag. Sc into back loop of 2nd ch from hook. Repeat across chain (19 sc). End leaving a long tail to use to sew loop to bag.

Finishing: Fold loop in half, with tapestry needle sew loop to outside center of one side of the bag. Sew button to other side of bag top. Handles From center 3 dc of the front of the bag, count 15 dc to the left and sew one side of handle to outside. Count 15 dc to the right and sew the other side of the handle to the outside. Repeat on back side of the bag with the other handle.
