The Medicine of Metals: A Qabbalistic Inquiry into the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram Fr. N.A.M.S.

Those who regard this ritual as a mere device to invoke or banish spirits, are unworthy to possess it. Properly understood, it is the Medicine of Metals and the Stone of the Wise Aleister Crowley

Introduction Rich in symbolism and deceptively simple in purpose the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram is much more than a banishing, containing a complete encylopaedia of initiation within the living symbols of its form and practice. Commonly referred to as a banishing ritual most appropriate for the neophyte, this ritual actually contains the formulas of Initiation. Aleister Crowley referred to it as The Medicine of Metals by for good reason. This ritual enables the mage to lay the foundation for hir practice at 4 levels of being, to cultivate a fertile magical environment, it contains the keys of transformational alchemy and provides the formula upon which all later rituals in the Magic of Light, the magic particular to Ceremonial groups such as the Golden Dawn and O.T.O. are produced. We will explore several techniques to enhance the depth of your practice, ever mindful of the artfulness and poetry particular to magic and to no other science. This we will approach it as it is worthy of being approached, as a key to mysteries! Thus we will open up our sensitivity to the powers invoked and awaken a dialog between ourselves and the living formulae that lay hidden in this profound and most numinous rituals. Its amazing, infinite in depth and intricacy, its like the Chinese boxes within boxes within boxes, thats how the ritual is each component contains the seeds of the next starting and ending with the Qabbalistic Cross, symbolically the cube unfolded. It unfolds before you once you establish an imaginal type of relationship with it. Now all ritual can be approached in this way but not all taps the ancient roots of our tradition nor serves as the foundation ritual of so many contemporary rites of all classes like the Lesser Banishing ritual of the Pentagram. There is a certain mystique about it and eloquence to its form and the synthesis of its elements from all aspects of the Hermetic Qabbalistic Tradition. History The QBL cross is loosely based on the Roman Catholic Sign of the Cross, with Hebrew slotted in from a translation of the "occult versical" to the Lord's Prayer -- actually just the way many Protestant's end that prayer. The Roman Catholic Sign of the Cross is itself derived from the old Sign of the Hammer of Thor, introduced by early missionaries in England and elsewhere in Europe to co-opt that older gesture.1 About the time Christianity co-opted the hammer of thor That would be around the time of the conversion of the Danes in England, most likely. Thor's hammer is recognised as one of the most distinctive religious symbols of the heathen Norse, and for a time was the chief rival of the Christian cross among the peoples of Medieval Scandinavia and Iceland. It was celebrated in Scandinavian mythology as the primary defence of gods and men against destruction at the hands of the fearsome frostgiants. Art, archaeology and folklore attest to the remarkable endurance of the hammer symbol, from the Bronze Age to the present day, not only as a significant religious motif, but also as a powerful ritual device "called upon Thor for seafaring and difficult decisions, and matters he considered of greatest importance". Also from Landnamabok is the case of Einar Thorgeirsson, who with a group of other settlers, claimed land in north-eastern Iceland by setting up at three points an axe (counterpart of the hammer) for Thor, an eagle for Odinn, and a cross for Christ. Sometimes there even appears to be some confusion of Christian and heathen practice, as in the case of King Hakon the Good of Norway, who had been obliged to drink from a bowl of sacrificial ale: "The king took it and made the sign of the cross over it. Then said Kar of Gryting, 'Wherefore does the king so? Will he even now not sacrifice?' Sigurd the Jarl answered, 'The king does as all do, who trust in their skill and strength; he blesses the bowl in the name of Thor, and makes the sign of the hammer over it before he drinks'. However, despite the strong Christian influence on the development of the hammer as a religious symbol, it is evident that the imagery, meaning and function of the hammer were entirely heathen.

The oldest immediate precursor to this part of the Ritual that I have been able to find is a part of a Hebrew Night Prayer: In the name of the Lord God of Israel, may Michael be at my right hand, and Gabriel at my left; before me Uriel; behind me Raphael; and above my head the divine presence." 2 It would be reasonable to look in Maash Merkabah and Hekaloth literature of the pre Christian era for precursors to this. The elemental attributions are not mentioned in the prayer. Similar attributions are found in Levis Conjuration of the four and in the older, Key of Solomon. The allocation of the directions to the archangels is different than the night prayer which seems to follow the elemental characteristics of the prevailing winds in Western Europe. The idea is that this represents the orientation of the magician to the universe in a way that portrays the meaning of the ritual. Facing east, the light of the son and aligning it to the tree and the elements we can see it as a ritual which links the microcosm to the macrosms in simple geometric form. Someone in the Golden Dawn innovated the form now used -- apparently based on Levi's suggestion and the material noted above. Much of this inforamtion I attainted from bill Heidrick of the OTO. The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram was the first ritual given to the Neophytes in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and has been given to newly initiated members of magical orders since. This has been for good reason, the LBR contains all of the elements of ritual style that many other rituals are founded, it serves as a vast training ground in the development of psychical and magical techniques of enormous use to neophytes and adepts alike and more importantly, it serves as a ritual of self-initiation. The LRP as a Rite of Initiation Initiation therefore is a development of the inner light, the gentle fanning of the flames of consciousness of the internal being. It requires peace of mind and the exercise of awareness of ones subconscious activities.(Torrens)3 The LBR therefore is a rite of initiation. It fans the flames of consciousness through devotion and prayer, rarifies the desires and establishes the peace of mind and circulation of the light necessary for the evolution necessary to occur. Uniting of opposites Chaos and Cosmos, Mercy and Severity, to the service of transmutation into a 3rd which WE EMBODY this is a rite of self- transformation. The Journey of Initiation. Thus you ascend the path of Tau, entering from darkness to life. Then reconcile the opposites within your being at the intersections of peh and samech, and as an arrow penetrate to the Macrocosmic world of Tiphareth uniting with the Angel in Gimel, awakening to the powers of Teth. The archetype (zodiacal sign) ruled by the sun. representing the crown of harmony and balance accomplished in the human personality, capable of perceiving and wielding the influences of the spirit. not cross the abyss.??? Magic works below the abyss. It works on the Yetziratic plane linked to the two above and one below, the two above through word and image, the below by action. ? One of the sub-classes of ministering angels is that of the Guardian angels, usually accepted as having Michael, Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel at their head (Godwin, 1999, p.68). Therefore the central focus of the ritual may be the invocation of ones Angel! The Pentagram ritual is capable of very great alterations and adaptations. This is the most instructive operational ritual other than initiation known to the Western tradition and serves as a basis for many of Crowleys shorter rituals, including The Star Ruby, Liber Resh, and others.4 The pentagram traced is what defines this ritual as a banishing. In a sense its simplicity and conciseness are what make this such a powerful ritual, each symbol, used for economy, contains multitudes of other symbols formula if we only scratch the surface with the guiding light of our imagination. In the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram only the earth pentagram is used containing all of the other elements. Israel Regardie suggested performing the invocation in the morning and the banishing at night. There are different variations to the LBR and, many former Golden Dawn members who comment on the ritual mention that there was a secret or "correct" version. See also the writings of Dion Fortune, Paul Foster Case and W.E. Butler. There is an oral tradition, attributed to Crowley by the former Caliph of the OTO, that the sacred direction is North, rather than East. The best thing to do would be to learn the ritual in it's common form, and then to experiment with these other attributions once the "Spirit Vision" is acquired. There is little point in getting lost in scholastic confusion over what is essentially an empirical matter. Mark these other versions for later experiment, but learn the standard one well. The standard version of the Pentagram Ritual is used as a baseline in discussion with other students. If you don't learn that version, you can't share the wealth of the researches of your colleagues. In particular, derivative rituals like Crowley's "Star Ruby" would be harder to learn and weaker in effect without knowledge of the standard version of the Lesser Pentagram Ritual. A 4 fold elegance A teacher of mine wrote, What I mean by this elegance is that in the LRP there is a regular progression through the numerical cycle down the Tree of Life from # 1 to #6, from Kether to Tiphareth. This is extended through a fourfold manner, the directions, the elements, as well as in the preliminary invocation into the number 10. Thus the LRP covers and in its essence invokes the whole Tree, the whole of manifest existence. This pattern occurs several times throughout the ritual reinforcing the connection with the heights and the depths, the extremes of existence. In summation the LRP works by Invoking and recapitulating creation through a formula that embraces the whole of the Hermetic Qabbalah. Being a living tradition composed of sentient forces whose symbols

are mere garments, the depths of insight and profundities of imaginative existence in its entirety are possible. To study and meditate upon the LBR is to extend our connection to the heights and depths that lay hidden in a deceptively simple, Banishing Rite. By delving into the depths of the symbolism of the LBR we awaken Numinosity, the fertile magical imagination is then nourished and we are further instructed and aided on our path through further initiation by the forces we contact in its study and practice it was originally made after two manners, or at least that it was characterized by two entirely different formulae, one reserved for priests and initiates, the other imparted to neophytes and the profane.5 This seems to relate to the difference in wording, and perhaps the manner in which the sign of the cross is made. Right to left vs. left to right, although Levi commits the error of using the direction of the catholic cross in his example. THE 3 STAGES OF RITUAL Separation, Liminal, Re-Integration Separation The QBL Cross Liminal Calling the Quarters, Conjuration of the Archae, The Grand Conjuration Re-Integration The QBL Cross Taking an imaginal approach, The Liquid-Light One of the things that I find so intriquing about literature such as Science Fiction, Fantasy and Poetry is that it dips into the same pool from which we draw our inspiration. Oftentimes I have met with the key to a magical formula or ritual, a certain gesture or inspiration in a Roger Zelazney novel about mythical beings engaged in a magical relationship with a sentient pattern, or in the story of Madwand, how he tweaks the strings of light he sees that come beckoning to unconscious desires, waiting to be drawn and knotted in correct fashion accomplishing his will. An imaginal approach, the artful one is important for therein contain the possibilities of Life! There is an imaginative approach to magic, one that sees the forces and images we work with as living and breathing creatures that have a place within a greater mythos we are working ourselves into. Being a magician, in this manner, is about developing a magical way of relating to the world, magic in the sense of the child. To quote a few definitions: The spirit must hold in complete subjection the combativeness of what is loosely termed educated reason, until facts have vanquished cold human sophistry. H.P. The Golden Dawn Magic is the dramatic way to God attributed to Israel Regardie Magic is the Science and Art of causing change to occur in conformity with Will. Aleister Crowley seems uninspired for at this stage of the Work I think we have combated superstition and now can return to the imaginative and soulful elements of the work that are in danger of being lost in a surge of exactitude and mechanical ness, tool box wielding magicians. Make our lead gold! Moisten the soul with the Living Waters of Truth that spring from the deepest reservoirs of our imagination. First The Astral Light. Astra Starry, we draw from the star which is derives from the constellation of Universal Mind that gave birth to our souls. This starry light is called a liquid light by Eliphas Levi, and I believe he alludes to its quicksilver quality which equates it with consciousness and thus it is a living light. This is important, because we start with the imaginative possibilities of this magnitude, WE ALLOW THEM TO HAPPEN! Using the Light, LVX from the Preliminary Invocation The QBL This is where we cross the Threshold from Secular into Sacred Space. The Qabbalistic Cross The Cross is the point of departure of four infinite lines for ever separated, united for ever by a centre which becomes that of immensity.In the center of the Cross there blooms the Mystical Rose. Rose of light, flower of life and love, the ordered petals of which typify the hearts of the elect in their harmonious hierarchy. The rose is the symbol of the Great Work(Levi) 6 A work of re-generation Hint in the Qabbalistic Cross, ending in Tiphareth. Levi points to the rose in the center and the movement seen in the rose cross ritual, a clockwise turn in the center of the breast symbolizing the path of the sun. The hieroglyphical sign of the Cross, symbol of the Name which resumes all names, image of the four cardinal points and the quadrature of the circleotherwise, the circular movement of the squarethis sign recapitulates and represents the whole philosophy and theology of the Kabalah.7 The Qabbalistic cross we traverse the path of Tav and descend it. This is our opening and closing, as well as sealingfor Tav is not only the cross but the signature or seal of the Divine Presence.

QBL Cross - The vibration of the divine names in the LBR - intonation Creating the tree of life within the body 4 sepheroth culminating in the sixth = 10. Also the 2 pillars uniting in the 3rd embody the whole tree traditionally. bowels of light, their effulgence touching the expanse of known universe to the unknown, : the idea of horizontal extending to infinity, the vertical to heights and depths. By bringing in a different focus, and openness to new levels fostered by your understanding and relationship to the symbolism, the rite changes. Its depths open up and the infinite chaos of creative possibilities unfold to dance around as the cosmic order hidden in the formulas of this rite. As you advance you start to manipulate the formula and it becomes another way for Knowledge and Conversation to Happen. The Cross contains the quaternary patterning of existence reconciled by a fifth element, magically 6 becomes hidden in a fifth and the 5 are concealed as four. How little normal men know of these added dimensions that lie hidden in the 4 four-fold world of our normal senses. Birth, Life, death and Immortality. Kether Malkuth. Chesed Geburah Ending in a rose unfolding from Tiphareth. This rose is composed of 22 petals of the Hebrew alphabet, allotted to the 7 planets, 12 signs, and 3 alchemical elements. (as Levi points out p.. the rose ) The cross foreshadows the creation of the circles. The extension of 1 point into a cross united and divided in a circle. Uniting with the Yechidah of our being. Qabbalistic cross? (of course! Tav means cross) remember Saturn gave birth to Jupiter Jove, which gave birth to all the others and the sign of the cross is 4. . Doing something toward the quarters likely predates the use of written language. Since the pentagram is a very old symbol, it is possible that it was occasionally used in such workings before anyone could have made a record of it.8 In the chapter The Conjuration of the Four Levi mentions drawing a pentagram in chalk and wielding a sword in the direction of each element. This is the closest example we have to the form of casting that this ritual represents. Although the pentagrams are not drawn in the air and this seems to be a more ancient style there is no way of knowing for certain whether or not the pentagram was used in such a manner and not recorded. This is a most ancient symbol and art and the answers are lost in antiquity. One of the 4 elemental prayers is from Comte de Gabalais, 1680. The prayer of the salamanders. Calling the Quarters We circumscribe the circle in clockwise fashion, following the course of the Sun. Begin by stepping from the center of the circle to approach East, or simply calling your

attention to that direction. Clear your mind and body with one deep breath, then gather the Light invoked in the Qabbalistic Cross as you draw the first pentagram, starting from the bottom left to the top, with the light. Visualize it as a White Brilliance with a blue flashing flames, like gaslight. Imaginatively connect the points of the pentagram with your body, as you draw the complete figure. Now inhale imaging the divine name for the quarter (East-YHVH; South-Adonai; West-Eheieh; North-AGLA, Ateh Gibor Le Olam Adonai) manifesting in your Breast, at Tiphareth The Heart letter by letter. Once the complete name has been formed fling it out through the pentagram to meet the ends of the Universe in the Sign of the Enterer vibrating the name as you Exhale all of your breath, let the name flow through your body holding the energy with a controlled finesse. The Circle The Circle as the Aura Paracelsus, in the 16th century, mentions the aura in the following terms: The vital force is not enclosed in man, but radiates round him like a luminous sphere and it may be made to act at a distance. In these semi-natural rays the imagination of man may produce healthy or morbid effects. It may poison the essence of life and cure diseases, or it may purify it after it has been made impure and restore it to health9 The circle represents the Aura, its the infinite and thus the body of Nuit, the unmanifest, the ground of being. Note that with the magician as a dot at the center from Horus perspective one can see the sigil of the Sol. The circle is an ancient symbol of the Infinite, Timeless, World of Eternal Perfection, and thus represents the Body of light here both images of Microcosm and Macrocosm meet. Circle itself is 0, the point within is Kether. Also represents the spiritual sun. Point in the Circle which is the magician. The point in the circle is the perfected Sun. This is the manifestation of the point we drew upon for the LVX of our operation in the QBL Cross with ATEH. 4 fold division Space is separated into the Aristotelian Elements and into the 4 worlds of the Hermetic Qabbalah. It can represent the 4 divisions of Malkuth the kingdom, or 4 sepheroth on the Tree of Life as suggested by Aleister Crowley. There are many ways that this division of 4 may manifest and it is repeated 4 times. Just to be sure! Basic characteristic qualities of matter, the Aristotelian elements each represented a combination. Heat and Dryness Air. Heat and Moisture Fire. Cold and Moisture -Water. Cold and Dryness-Earth. Traditionally, the magician is facing East during this, with elements attributed as follows: East = Air; South = Fire; West = Water; North = Earth. Regardie cites a Golden Dawn variation of the ritual which was used for "spirit vision in the abode" of the signs. In this variation the

allocation is to the Kerubs of the fixed signs, and the elemental allocation is discussed in "The Golden Dawn", volume III, page 14. Using the variation there, we could have: Michael-East; Uriel-South; Raphael-West and Gabriel -North. A different way of interpreting this theory of allocation by fixed signs might have: Raphael-East; Uriel West; Michael-South and Gabriel-North. These two variations on one theory have to do with the sign to take to start the year, the matching of Archangels to elements, and the orientation of the magician to the universe10. In drawing the circle and the pentagrams we engage of all the senses : Drawing the Pentagram involves the Pronunciation of the name involves the Auditory The resonance of the name involves the Tactile The use of Incense brings the Olfactory to bear The use of the imagination bringing them all together, - engaging all five senses The Pentagram is the crown of man. It is the symbol of the opposites reconciled in his being brought to the service of the pattern or signature of god that he is in truth at the essence of things. This quintessence rules the elements of the 4 fold world of nature, fire water air and earth in that order also mirroring the Qabbalistic tree of life and the 4 worlds of Atziluth, Beriyah, Yetzirah and Assiah which contain the ethereal root of each element. By the pentagram also is measured the exact proportions of the great and unique Athanor necessary to the confection of the Philosophical Stone and the accomplishment of the Great Work. The most perfect alembic in which the Quintessence can be elaborated is conformable to this figure, and the Quintessence itself is represented by the Sign of the Pentagram. Thus it contains the measurements necessary to perform the work and acts as a template defining the proper space which prepares and consummates the Stone we seek. The Pentagram unwinds to become the flaming sword, it is wrapped around the body of the Microcosm guarding the mysteries that lead into the Eden contained within the Soul. The pentagram or Sign of the Microcosmos, represents among other magical mysteries the double sympathy of the human extremities with each other and with the circulation of the Astral Light in the human body. The pentagram in the Kabalah is called the sign of the Microcosm just as the Hexagram, described later is the Macrocosm. Pentagram, 5 wounds of Christ. The Microcosmic man. 5 Pentagrammaton which is Arik Anpin the perfected Microcosmic WoMan. The Macrocosm and Microcosm united foreshadowing the culmination in the hexagram at the next stage. Pentagram Triple tongue of shin = the crown. Two angles, active and passive, Od and Ob coming together in a third signifying 3 rays and thereby SHIN.

The Pentagrams with a divine name signifies : Tau Cross = Seal of God. Signature. Imprinted, Inscribing the fourfold name in our body of light. Pentagrams Pentagrammaton each Tetragrammaton represents a different aspect of consciousness to be distilled and refined. Much like YHVH becomes YHShVH, this signifies the 4 fold Tetragrammaton, Microprosopus becoming the Adam Kadmon, or perfected man. This Pentagrammaton unites with the Macrocosm through the operation of the Hexagram at the middle pillar, the central point within our magical circle, also likened to the Axis of Hermes in Haucks Emerald Tablet. Not just a symbol of equilibrium but of generation which is a process of living, dying and being reborn..note : Osiris being divided, and reunited. Aur, is the upper point of the pentagram. Of is the lower right point, and Ob is the lower left. When drawing the pentagram keep in mind its connection to your body. The angles both draw from the balanced light and radiate out into the body of the elements which can be likened to a cross. Therefore, hidden in the Pentagram we have the formulation of a fundamental symbol of the Golden Dawn, the Equilateral Cross in a triangle representing the perfected body surrounded by active, passive and equilibrated light. This speaks of the teaching, Equilibrium is the basis of the Great Work. Earth is the point used in the LRP, earth containing and completing all of the elements. The Divine Names YHVH He will be. Tetragrammaton (26) Adonai My Lord. Place holder for the unspoken name, also used to represent the Angel. (65) Eheieh I Am. Being. (21) What god says when he manifests. Yesod is the gateway. AGLA Notariqon for Ateh Gibor Le Olahm Adonai. Think this as you pronounce the Notariqon best to hear the whole vibrated behind it. The divine names can be related to the sepheroth as Crowley defines them. YHVH is Tiphareth The Logos administrating the harmony and perfection of things containing the divine seed, the Shin the hidden fifth quintessence, and thus the formula of resurrection. Adonai is the Lord, and relates to our Genius. The genius or HGA of the universe guides the manifestation of all forms in the ordered universe, all proper patterns of thought and thus finds its home in HOD, splendor, and sphere of mercury. Eheieh is the breath over the living waters that the creator spake in the beginning, I Am that I am, the foundation of the sovereign self that we forge by this art. Finally AGLA, the summation of all 4 words contained in a Notariqon declaring the eternal presence in all things, therefore this is the Occult Intelligence of Netzach meaning that in nature and its seeming corruption lies the eternal, mysterious and most ineffable of mysteries preserving all of life and waiting to be tapped.

Letting the symbols speak to you. Opening up to the different dimensions of the rituals, its stages and process versus staying over focused on its result or purpose. Seeing the ritual as an unfoldment of the universe, from unmanifest through all 4 levels of your being to the six rayed star in the center, whether as a cube or as the penetration of Nuit by Hadit, there is a grace and beauty that unfolds astrally that can missed unless you listen to the life in this most glorious of Arts. There is a fundamental elegance in the use of Tetragrammatons to charge the pentagrams. YHVH, ADNI, AHYH and AGLA. These four-fold words charging four things, providing a four-fold balance to the six-rayed star that is formulated in the Grand Conjuration. (4+6=10) This again is a ten, the Whole tree. (With the addition of the one that is the column within which the Star shines we have 11 magick.) The crossing of the threshold Symbolized again in the step with the left foot, in the attitude of the ancient gods of Khem. Sign of the Enterer Engages all the senses, or use the dagger, or proper elemental implement if The position of the feet Breath in and visualize the letters resting one by one, side by side in your breast in flashing flames. Once the whole word is complete, exhale projecting the word, with the sign of the enterer, into the pentagram feeling the your breath carrying the sound to meet the reaches of the Universe. Catch back its reflection with the sign of silence. (note that once again we have the uniting of the pillars, Chesed = Hoorparcrates in the sign of silence, the passive; Geburah = Horus in the sign of the enterer; these result in Heru-RaHa in Tiphareth, the crowned and conquering Sovereign Self. ) Carving and engraving of the Sefer Yetzirah, Inhaling, we see the letters come down and settle in the chaos below our feet, then exhaling projecting them outward carving the letters out of space, and engraving them in your consciousness with the flames as you vibrate the names and catch back the reflection across the expanses of the universe. Two are reconciled by a third to reveal a unity of one. 4 are reconciled in 5 to reveal the beauty of a new dimension defined by a 6th. 4 become one through this 5th and meet in the 6th which defines all by none. And So the work is done. Stand in the form of the Tau cross. The Conjuration of the Archae Stand in the center of the circle in the attitude of Osiris Slain, in the form of a cross and imagine the completed circle with the Pentagrams surrounding you. Feel the bluish white flames clear and consecrate the space, concentrating within the center of your heart. Visualize the divine names in each pentagram, take your time to feel the living essence of the letters energize each pentagram that forms each of 4 rays of light meeting at the center and contained by the circle. Now say Before me Raphael (healing of God),

Behind me Gabriel (potency of God), To My Right Hand Michael (likeness of God) and To My Left Hand Auriel (light of God). The telesmatic images.
