Music Under Glass schedule announced

The Milwaukee County Parks has announced the concert schedule for Music Under Glass (MUG), the concert series at the Mitchell Park Domes, located at 524 S. Layton Blvd. Live performances and computer light shows will fill The Domes every Thursday night, Nov. 7-April 3 (including Thanksgiving). "Music Under Glass celebrates area talent and brings music and culture to our residents," said Milwaukee County Executive, Chris Abele. "This is an amazing weekly event that transforms The Domes into a fall and winter 'getaway.'" The series opens with the WAMI-awardwinning Tweed Funk and continues with a variety of musical formats. Concerts run from 6:30-9:30 p.m., with light shows at the break and following the performance. New this year is an area in the lobby with information tables staffed by community nonprofit groups. Each week, a new group will be present to explain their mission and how the public can get involved. In addition to taking in great performances, seeing spectacular light shows, and exploring 'Milwaukee's Living Landmark,' the public can become aware of all the great opportunities the non-profits offer," said John Dargle, Interim Parks Director. "Concert-goers will be introduced to a variety of organizations and will learn how their involvement can make our community a better place." Music Under Glass is fully funded through generous partnerships with the Milwaukee County Parks Department. Funding partners include WaterStone Bank, VMP, Blue Moon Brewing Company, and Friends of The Domes. Funding partners will also have information booths in the lobby, where individuals can learn more about their services and products. Admission to "Music Under Glass" is $6.50 for adults and $5 for youth ages 6-17. Food and beverages are available for purchase from Zilli Hospitality Group. Historic Milwaukee offers Cemetery Tour Oct. 30

As a first-time event, Historic Milwaukee will guide a historic Halloween tour of Forest Home Cemetery on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. Located in the city's Lincoln Village neighborhood, Forest Home Cemetery is the resting place of many influential Milwaukeeans including Byron Kilbourn, the Davidson Brothers, Guido Pfister, Mayor George Walker, and Beer Barons Pabst, Schlitz, and Blatz. The cemetery was first used in 1850, and has grown to 200 acres of locally and nationally historically landmarked land. The tour will be guided by Historic Milwaukee expert guide Bob Giese. Aside from guiding hundreds of tours for Historic Milwaukee and Forest Home, Mr. Giese has written a number of articles on Milwaukee, including the Beer Barons, Milwaukee River, Mac Arthur Family, City Hall and How Milwaukee got its name. "This tour sold out within 48 hours," said Historic Milwaukee Program Manager Grace Fuhr. "I can't think of anything better to do than walk through a dark cemetery on Oct. 30 while learning about Milwaukee's history." The tour has a limited capacity and is sold out. Get the soap Perhaps the simplest thing to do to take care of your car is to wash it on a regular basis. Washing your car once a week can help keep at bay the bugs, tar and other debris that can build up over time. Given a foothold, these things can become nearly impossible to clean off. If you can't manage a once-a-week wash, try for once a month. If you can't manage once a month and you have kids, hire 'em out. Check the oil. Stat! Your car's oil is like its blood. It needs to be checked regularly. Check your owner's manual for the type of oil your car uses and where the oil dipstick under the hood is located. At least once a month, check your oil level. Top it off if necessary. All you need is the oil, a funnel and some paper towels to clean up any mess. And while you're checking the oil... Your car has other fluids that need to be checked every so often as well. These include automatic transmission fluid, coolant (antifreeze), brake fluid, differential oil and power steering fluid. Consult your owner's manual for the location of these fluid reservoirs. Check their levels periodically, top them off when necessary and have them changed when your manual indicates. Tips for interior detailing

By Sam Erickson In the fall, people begin to think about the harsh roads of winter that lie ahead. That means checking the tires, the oil and other mechanical systems. If you've taken good care of your car during the year, then you might not have much to do. In fact, you might want to give yourself a treat and detail the interior of your car. Here are some tips. Basically, cars have two types of surfaces: hard and soft. Vacuuming is really your first step, and you'll want to make sure you have enough power in your vacuum to do the job. Often, plug-in vacuums just don't have the power, so haul your household vacuum or your shop vac out to the driveway. Be careful not to scratch any hard surfaces. Most vacuums come with a brush attachment that you can use to clean the hard surfaces without scratching them. Take the floor mats out and wash them with a hose, detergent and scrubber. These are usually the dirtiest areas of the car, and taking them out will allow you to really put some elbow grease into cleaning them. Vinyl hard surfaces are the easiest to clean. Any surface cleaning agent will do, although you will want to make sure you read the label to check for any warnings. Saturate a towel with solution, swab the area and then use a microfiber towel to wipe off any excess. Stubborn stains might take a couple of washings. If you want to do a really thorough job, take the seats out. This will give you access to the entire seat as well as the surrounding area. Next, you'll want to turn your attention to the soft surfaces. Are they leather or cloth? Often, the only real leather in a leather interior is on the seating surfaces and the rest of the surfaces are vinyl. Know the specs on your car to ensure you use the right products. Leather cleaners require special cleaning materials, so contact a local expert to see what they recommend. The best option for cloth seats is a good foam carpet cleaner, but that will require a wet/dry vacuum to clean. With any product, try cleaning a small, hidden area first to ensure you won't be removing the color or causing any other harm to the interior. Detailing the interior is a job you can do on your own, although you may have to buy a few products. Keeping the interior in excellent shape will provide you with a better feel in the car and will add to the resale value. You can put as much or as little time into this interior remodel as you like, but the more energy you put in, the higher your return will be.

Prevent tire decay

By Ralph Lee Rotating your car's tires is like going to the dentist. Nobody likes it, but it's something that should be done. Depending on where and when it happens, getting a flat tire is similar to teeth issues. If a tire goes flat in your driveway, it's like a small cavity that has to be filled. It's annoying but not that big a deal. If a tire blows in rush-hour traffic, you're talking full-blown root canal, and who wants that? Here are some tips to prevent tire decay. Most newer model cars are front-wheel drive, and tire rotation becomes important because the front tires wear faster than the rear. The reason for this is simple: When you make any kind of full turn in traffic or follow the curve of the road, more of the vehicle's weight is placed on the edges of the tires. This especially affects the front tires because these are ones that are actually turning while the rear tires stay in a straight line. This turning causes the edges of the tires to wear over time. If your tires wear unevenly, you're suspectible to spotty braking and poor handling-real toothaches, er, headaches. Another important aspect to tire rotation is the eventual replacement of your tires. If you don't rotate your tires, you'll replace them two at a time, and that means always having uneven wear on your wheels. If you replace your tires four at a time-and keep them rotated regularly-you'll have even wear on all four. How often should you rotate your tires? Well, that obviously varies based on the amount of miles you drive each day. Unfortunately, for some drivers, you may need to rotate your tires more often than you visit the dentist for a checkup. A rotation is often recommended at about 7,500 miles. That's often the time for an oil change, so do some multi-tasking and get both jobs done at once. Check your owner's manual to see when it recommends tire rotations for your particular model. How to have your tires rotated has been subject to debate similar to the discourse over the merits of fluoride. Again, check your owner's manual to see if there's a specific method recommended for your model of vehicle. If there isn't, there are two basic ways for front-wheel drive tire rotation, and both are as simple as flossing. One method is to move the front driver's side tire to the back driver's side and the back driver's side to the front passenger's side. The front passenger's side then moves to the back passenger's side and the back passenger's side to the front driver's side. Another method is to swap the front driver's side and the rear passenger's side tires with each other, and then swap the front passenger's side tire with the rear driver's side. Either method seems to help the tires achieve more even tread wear,and that's what you're after. Keeping your tires rotated on a regular basis can prevent an ill-timed flat tire and that can prevent grinding and gnashing your teeth-which is a whole different dental problem.

Addressing a project in several stages

By Tresa Erickson When a large home improvement project looms, like adding a deck or updating your kitchen or bathroom, it can be overwhelming. As you write out the supply list, you may find yourself thinking of all the other things you would rather be doing. If you aren't careful, those thoughts can take over and the project moved to the back burner. To avoid this scenario, it may be helpful to look at the project as a series of stages. Say you're updating your kitchen. If you think about everything you have to do from the sanding to the painting to the lighting, you are sure to get overwhelmed and put the kibosh on the whole thing. If, however, you take the time to sit down and stage out the process, you are more likely to proceed with it. So, sit down and make a list of all the tasks that need to be done. Do you plan to change out the lighting? Write that down. Do you plan to paint the walls and cabinets? Write that down. Do you plan to replace the trim? Write that down. Do you plan to add a backsplash? Write that down. Do you plan to change out the countertops? Write that down. Keep going until you have every task listed. Now, take that list and determine what tasks should occur first. Painting, for example, should probably come before the new trim, lighting, backsplash and countertops. That way, you won't have to worry about spilling paint on any of the new items. Once everything is painted, you might want to tackle the trim-your walls and cabinets will then be complete. Next up should be the countertops. Once they're in, you can install the backsplash and the under-the-cabinet lighting. Still feeling overwhelmed? Not to worry. Get out your calendar and schedule each of the tasks, giving yourself plenty of time to complete each. Don't try to paint everything all in one day. It won't happen. Give yourself a weekend to prep and paint the walls and an extra long weekend to tackle the cabinets. Work on one section of the cabinets at time. Do the lower cabinet bases one day, the upper cabinet bases the next and the cabinet doors the day after that. Wrap everything up on the final day with the installation of the doors and new hardware and whatever touchups may be needed. Once you have the tasks scheduled, you can start gathering the supplies and preparing for the work ahead. It is important that you have everything you need to complete each task. Multiple trips to the store will slow progress considerably. It is also important that you commit to the schedule and do your best to stick to it. Veer off too many times or try to do too much at once, and you may never get back on track again. You don't want to spend the next five years of your life working on your kitchen, or worse, stop work altogether and end up with a half-finished kitchen. Motivation, of course, is half the battle. If walls getting painted and new lighting going up is not enough to keep you on track, don't hesitate to try something else. Have some friends over to ooh and ah over what you have completed and cheer you on to the next stages, or treat yourself to a movie or dinner for each task you complete. Do whatever is needed to stay motivated. The more progress you make, the more disciplined you will become and the closer you will get to the kitchen you envisioned. Attacking large home improvement projects in stages can make quick work of them. Give it a shot. You just might get the project done and be free for other pursuits.

Maintaining Jobs and Work Through Machine Automation

One of the great misleading myths of modern manufacturing is that North America cannot compete in a global manufacturing marketplace and is losing jobs due to lower foreign labor costs.
