Columbia Music Scholarship Conference 2014 Call for Abstracts on the theme: Music and Memory The Columbia Music Scholarship Conference invites graduate students and recent Ph.D. recipients to submit abstracts to be selected for presentation at our tenth annual meeting on March 8, 2014 at Columbia University in New York. The theme of the 2014 meeting will be Music and Memory. Burgeoning interdisciplinary inquiry on memory is enabling scholars to develop new perspectives in a diverse array of fields ranging from history, anthropology, sociology, literary studies, art history, archeology, cultural studies, and media studies, to philosophy, political science, theology, education, psychology, and the cognitive sciences. This conference will add to this growing interdisciplinary conversation about memory in the sciences, arts, and humanities, stimulating a dialogue both on the role of memory in music studies and on the place of music in studies of memory. We are soliciting proposals for twenty-minute presentations from scholars active in all music disciplines as well as from scholars in related fields, aiming to maximize the theoretical and methodological breadth of the discussion. We seek to consider the complexity of memorys embeddedness in musics practices, subjects, objects, ideologies, sites, and technologies. We are interested in memory as lived, constructed, represented, performed, transmitted, inscribed, incorporated, and stored, as persisting, travelling and circulating, as material and immaterial, human and non-human, as a capacity and a resource that impacts and shapes everyday lives. In what ways can memory influence musical practice, and in what ways can musical practice influence memory? How might we theorize memory musically? What can music scholars offer to memory studies, and memory scholars to music studies? We welcome creative interpretations of the conference theme. Possible topics might include: memory and musical experience (temporality, repetition, form, motive, narrative, meaning, perception, agency); sites for memory (place, space, institutions, archives, bodies, canons, monuments, manuscripts); memory, transmission, and circulation; media memory (music memory formats, mediality, the actual and the virtual); memory and belonging (identity, community, publics, tradition, nationalism, diaspora, displacement, cosmopolitanism); memory and sentiment (longing, melancholy, trauma, nostalgia, death, lament); the politics and cultural construction of memory; erasures and absences (forgetting, silence, deafness, destruction); memory, ethics, and the law in music;

memory in composition, listening, performance, improvisation, dance, and documentary; memory in music historiography, ethnomusicology, music theory, and music pedagogy.

Please submit abstracts of no more than 250 words, including a title, to 2014cmsc@gmail.com by December 15, 2013. Any inquiries can also be made to this email address. Please include your name and contact information in your e-mail only, and attach the abstract as a Word, text, or .pdf file. The committee will select papers anonymously. All scholars who submit abstracts will be notified of the committees decision by the end of the calendar year.
