Programme/ Contract Hawkeye 2000 Details Although there are other countries that use the Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye (or updated Hawkeye 2000) AEW aircraft, the French Navy is the only force that operates it from an aircraft carrier other than the US. Frances only aircraft carrier, the Value/Date Key Companies Involved Northrop Grumman

Hawkeyes. France could possibly order new Hawkeyes toward the end of the decade. Interest in Reaper MALE UAVs France has expressed interest in possibly buying General Atomics ASI Reaper MALE UAVs. Up to 16 Reapers, eight ground stations, and related equipment will be acquired in a deal worth $1.5bn. Telemos In a defence summit in February 2012 between France and the UK, it was confirmed that the two countries will sign a risk-reduction contract with Frances Dassault Aviation and the UKs BAE Systems to develop the Telemos MALE UAV. Telemos will be based on the Mantis, a twin-turboprop UAV that had been developed by BAE Systems. Arming Telemos will also be considered. Early estimates of the development costs of Telemos have $1.4bn Dassault Aviation, BAE Systems $1.5bn General Atomics ASI

7. Expert Opinion
7.1 Logos Technologies
Logos Technologies (www.logos-technologies.com) is a US company based in Fairfax, Virginia that provides persistent surveillance solutions. Dr John Marion is director of the persistent surveillance division of Logos Technologies. Visiongain interviewed Dr Marion in May 2013 and we are grateful for his contribution.

____

7.1.1 Logos Technologies Products and Capabilities

Visiongain: Can you tell us about Logos Technologies airborne ISR products and what unique capabilities they bring?

Logos Technologies John Marion: There are three main products and they are all grouped in what we call intelligent persistent surveillance. There is the Kestrel wide-area sensor, which is miniaturised and goes into the second product, a Type II UAV called LEAPS (lightweight expeditionary airborne persistent surveillance). LEAPS, the Type II UAV, is still undergoing testing, but we have made 20 Kestrel systems that have been deployed to ten sites in Afghanistan. The third product is the processing back-end that makes it into an intelligent persistent surveillance system, which means we not only collect the data but process and add it to other intelligent sources to make it into a system that can be exploited by an analyst. So Kestrel is part of an aerostat deployment, or airships that are tethered to the ground and fly two to three thousand feet. They typically have a couple of sensors on them, one of them a full-motion video ball. Kestrel is able to see a city-sized area and in both day and night can take several hundred pictures every second as it rotates around. You can stitch those pictures together so that you effectively get an image of the whole city, which is updated once a second.

7.1.2 Kestrel Working with Other Airborne ISR Assets

Visiongain: How does the Kestrel work with other UAV and airborne ISR assets? Does Kestrel complement them or do you see it competing directly?

Logos Technologies John Marion: The aerostat is ideal for those situations where youre going to be in one spot for a while. For example, in forward operating bases, aerostats are an obvious, preferred way of doing wide-area motion imagery, or in areas like the US border areas. Whereas, UAVs you can fly around wherever you want and they are more useful when these target you are looking for are dispersed or change frequently. The other thing is that an aerostat has a tether to

8. Leading Companies in the Airborne ISR Market
The following chapter profiles some of the major vendors in the airborne ISR market. Given the complexity of the market and the relative lack of space in this report, we offer the following as a representative sample rather than as an exhaustive list.

8.1 AAI Corporation

Table 8.1 AAI Company Overview 2012 (Total Revenue, HQ, Ticker, Website)
2012 Total company revenue $bn Headquarters Ticker (NYSE) Website Source: Visiongain 2013 AAI Corporation is a subsidiary of US defence contractor Textron Inc. AAI is a specialist UAV manufacturer with over 20 years experience supplying tactical UAV systems to the US Department of Defense (DoD) and also to international customers. AAI, a company founded in 1950, is based in Hunt Valley, Maryland. $12.3bn (parent company Textron) Hunt Valley, Maryland TXT (Textron) www.aaicorp.com

AAIs best known unmanned aircraft product is the RQ-7 Shadow, a tactical UAV widely used by the US Army and Marines, as well as several militaries worldwide. The US Army is also sponsoring an ongoing programme of technical enhancements including new payloads and a heavy-fuel engine. The type was adopted by the US Marine Corps (USMC) to replace its ageing Pioneer. In May 2010, Sweden, a neutral country with forces deployed in Afghanistan serving under the United Nations, also ordered two Shadow systems in a deal worth about $70m. The Shadow has also been ordered by Poland.

AAIs Australian unit Aerosonde produces a tactical UAV named after that company. The Aerosonde 4.7 was offered for the US Navy/Marine Corps small tactical unmanned aircraft system (STUAS)/Tier II programme but lost out to the Boeing/Insitu Integrator UAV.

AAI has developed an interoperable network of common ground control station (GCS) that control and support the Shadow tactical UAV, as well as the companys other UAVs. AAI's Universal GCS aims to allow different types of UAVs to be controlled from a single GCS.
