Hollywood Riviera is an area located in both Redondo Beach and Torrance at the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The Hollywood Riviera was initially developed by Clifford Reid. Clifford Reid was fascinated by the motion picture industry, and when he first viewed the area he compared it to the French Riviera. He believed that it would be very attractive to the Hollywood crowd, thus naming it Hollywood Riviera. A tract sales office was built at the comer of Monte DOro and Palos Verdes Boulevard, which included a large dining hall and lecture hall built behind the office for sales presentations. Reid began selling lots in the 604 acre development in 1927 for the Huntington Land Company for about $3,500. Reids plan to attract movie stars to buy lots was severely impacted by the Depression, and the developments anti-Semitic policies, which prohibited Hollywood elites such as Louis B. Mayer and Sam Goldwyn from owning property there. Clifford Reid built the Hollywood Riviera Beach Club in 1931 as a glamorous amenity which would encourage homebuyers to buy lots. Residents of the Hollywood Riviera development automatically became members of the club, though dues were required to use the pool and to attend special events held there. The club was located on the beach at the current location of Miramar Park and had a 75 foot swimming pool. A putt-putt golf course existed just east of the Beach Club in the early thirties where the Vista Bahia apartments now stand. Roy Stewart, Reids brother-in-law, managed the club from 1930-1942. Several South Bay organizations met at the Club. Not long after Pearl Harbor, the military installed anti-aircraft guns in the hills by Torrance beach, and the pounding of the ensuing target practice structurally damaged the club, which closed in 1942. The club reopened after the war after Reid sold it, and its new owners made it a public club which operated throughout the 1950s as a night club. The border of Torrance and Redondo Beach ran down the middle of the club, and supposedly customers would have to cross from one side of the tavern to the other to stay in compliance with each citys liquor laws. Unfortunately, the club suffered some flood damage from storms both in 1955 and 1957. Norton Wisdom had taken over the club in 1957 and signed a new lease which extended until June 30, 1965. Mysteriously, on Sept. 25, 1958 a fire broke out that completely destroyed the club. For years afterward, plans were made to re-develop the site. One proposal was a teen center. In 1964, the Sovereign Development Co. had proposed a plan to build a 16-story apartment complex on the site but the proposal was opposed by Hollywood Riviera residents. Eventually, in 1972 courts ruled that the propertys then-owner, Oscar Berk, could not build upon the property that he had purchased for $600,000 as the land had reverted to public ownership.

While working with reclaimed wood can sometimes be stressful and time consuming, especially when having to find pieces that fit together, Schwartzman wouldnt have it any other way.One of the challenges in working with reclaimed wood is finding the right pieces. They are twisted and warped, but that is what I enjoy about it, Schwartzman said. The thing about wood, unlike paint or bronze or marble is that every day it is different. It expands, it contracts, it cracks and falls apart. Getting most of the reclaimed wood from California, Schwartzman tries not to use screws when possible, believing the process should be more advanced. It is furniture, but I also try to bring an artistic sensibility to everything I create. These are all handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces that are made locally, Schwartzman said. The beauty in reclaimed wood is that its not just a tree. After that, it was turned into a barn, then cabinets. You can keep creating new things from reclaimed wood. It has so many lives.

Growing up, Van Schwartzman never liked building things. He remembers never
even setting foot in his high schools woodshop. However, just a few years ago, he did something unusual. Schwartzman started building furniture and created his own company, Van Go Woodworks. It is pretty strange how I ended up in carpentry and woodworking, Schwartzman said. However, I now love the sculptural aspect of
Schwartzman mainly works with reclaimed wood, creating everything from tables and cabinets to mirrors and bowls. He makes sure nothing is ever wasted. His work can been seen at Grace & Greene in the Riviera Village and at Marea Boutique
A South Bay resident, Schwartzman plans to open a gallery at 24409 Hawthorne Blvd. in Torrance on Nov. 16. It will not only showcase his designs, but other artists. It has been building to this for a while now. I have talked about it for a good three years, Schwartzman said. Ive always wanted to have a space where people can

Walk into Moon Dancer in the Riviera Village and you are immediately transported to a Southwestern paradise full of jewelry, pottery and home accessories. People say, Oh, we love this store. It is almost like a museum, owner Paula Hausvick said. The flavor of the Southwest is here. Everything is still handmade and basically one-of-a-kind. At 1706 S. Catalina Ave. since 1992, Moon Dancer has evolved over the years. Originally carrying just Native American pieces, the store has diversified its selection to include pieces from Northern Mexico and even China. Living in Santa Fe, New Mexico half of the year allows Hausvick to find things that would be perfect to sell in Moon Dancer. Often times, Hausvick finds pieces just walking down the street in Santa Fe. Vendors know who I am, so they bring me things to see, whether that is a sculpture, jewelry or bags they are doing, Hausvick said. If I decide I like it, it is different and no one else has it, then I will get it so we have a good mixture of everything. She occasionally goes to Native American reservations outside of Santa Fe to buy things from the Pueblo, Navajo and Apache tribes.
I know the artists and can meet the artists. Dealing with them on a one-on-one basis is great, Hausvick said. I have to know who made it and what its like. Also, how its made and what its made from so I can stand behind it. Because of their appeal to a greater range of people, Moon Dancers most popular items include Native American rugs and pillows, along with Qaxaca figures from Mexico. The store also carries clothing by designer Karen Wilkinson that is made out of vintage Mexican sarapes from the 1930s and 1940s. When it comes to jewelry, Moon Dancer now carries more contemporary pieces made by Dottie Wood, Consuelo Campos and Federico Jimenez. Anyone can have a gold chain and a pair of diamond studs. That is not what its about. It is about individuality and being able to feel good about having something that not everyone else has when you walk down the street, Hausvick said. You can see the craftsmanship in everything. Not only that, a whole history exists behind the pieces. It is so much fun to talk about and has a story.
