Mineral Identification Report

you might not get the same results or the correct results 1. State the problem (the objective in the form of a question). 2. Gather information. 3. Form a hypothesis. 4. Experiment! 5. Record and analyze data. 6. Form a conclusion. 7. Communicate results.

Galena

Do you think the steps below of the scientific method must be followed in order? Yes, because if you dont

Now that you are done researching and identifying your mineral fill-in the information for each step of the scientific method below. Then, number which step was first, second, etc. Objective: Use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. Materials: -Mineral -Streak Plate - Magnet - Word Documents 1. Mr. Finan gave me a mineral. 2. I studied my mineral 3. We talked about them 4. We did tests - other minerals for hardness - pencils - I.D. sheet - memo books 5. Hardness test 6. Filled out a mineral I.D. sheet 7. Checked it over 8. Posted it on our blogs

Procedure:

1. State the problem. (Hint: Just write the objective above in the form of a question.) How can I use the scientific method to find out what my mineral is? 2. Gather information. (Look it up and/or ask an expert) *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 3. Form a hypothesis. Write a statement that tells what mineral you think yours is (your two guesses). My hypotheses were Galena and Wolfrimite. 4. Start the experiment! (Follow the procedure.) 5. Record and analyze data. *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 6. Form a conclusion. This must be a paragraph that includes:
An answer to the problem (question 1). How your hypothesis compares with the actual results. (Was your hypothesis correct? If not, how close were you?) A description of your mineral and what helped you find the identification of your mineral the most.

First, I used the steps of the scientific method to find the identity of my mystery mineral I was given. The procedures I used to identify my mineral were first, I was given my "mystery" mineral. Then my class did multiple tests on our minerals. One of the tests we did was the hardness test; we used other minerals and scratched them along our own minerals. Another test was the streak test; we would take our mineral and scratch it along a piece of unglazed porcelain. After running these tests, I made a hypothesis of Galena, and it was. My "mystery" mineral had a very high density, which means it was very heavy. The mystery mineral of mine had only a hardness of three, which means it is easily scratched. My mineral was metallic that means that it had a very shiny outer color. What helped me most was my science textbook and the websites that Mr. Finan provided. In conclusion, the website that helped me the most was http://webmineral.com because Mr. Finan gave us the first letter of our mineral; this made it easy to find it.

7. Communicate your results. Post this report and your Data Sheet where people can see it !
