We moved to Banks from Portland in 1997 and xed up our new (old)

Women have long been a vital part of western
Washington Countys business scene.
If you think about killer cinnamon buns, the name Maggie probably comes to
mind. And if you want some locally roasted coffee, the initials BJ (for Becky
Jo) may pop up. But its not just the food industry where our local women
shine. They can be found from construction sites to board rooms.
In fact, nearly a third of American businesses are now run by women and that figure is
rising quickly.
The most recent census data show there are nearly 8 million women-owned enterprises
in this country and that they are growing at twice the rate of male-owned businesses.
In western Washington County women hold prominent posts not only in business, but
also education and government. Leslie Hallick is president of Pacific University, Jolynn
Becker is the city manager in Banks, Yvonne Curtis heads the Forest Grove School District
and Janie Schutz just marked her one-year anniversary as Forest Groves first female
police chief.
But most women in business are less well-known. Ninety percent of women-owned
ventures are classified as small businesses, and thats certainly the case in this area.
The Small Business Administration (SBA) has labeled October as National Women in
Small Business Month. To mark the occasion, the News-Times is highlighting not only
local women who, like Maggie Pike and Becky Jo Saxe, own their local businesses but
also women who play other key roles in our economy.

We are a temporary labor service, specializing in

While working and recruiting for a big
employment agency, Doroth saw the focus of
temporary employment shifting from technical
positions to labor openings.
My boss didnt want to pursue that, so I saw a
chance to fill a niche. I had the skill, experience
and resources to do it, so it was a natural fit,

When a business closes, many employees see it as a
setback. Fawn Caneld viewed it as an opportunity. After
nine years working for Hortons Ofce Supply, Fawn knew
how many people in the Forest Grove area depended on
the small store for their printing needs. So when Gene
Horton retired, Fawn decided to open Forest Grove Business

After Hortons closed I decided I did not want to give

When Penny Costley
signed up for her rst
jazzercise class 13
years ago, she wasnt
looking for a vocation,
just a place to meet
folks in her new
hometown and fulll
a requirement for a
health class she was
taking at PSU.
Five years later, when her instructor left Forest
Grove, she decided to take over the job and is now a
certied jazzercise instructor and owner of Jazzercise
Fitness Center.
With her degree in biology and a love of dance,
Penny sees jazzercise as a unique paring of fun and
tness. You get cardiovascular conditioning, strength
training and stretching all in one 60-minute class, she
says. Jazzercise blends moves from dance, pilates, yoga
and kickboxing, all choreographed to fresh, hot music.
Pennys students, who range from beginners to
veteran jazzercists, describe her as funny, personable
and encouraging. But the one word that comes up
most often is enthusiastic. As one student put it,
She makes working out fun!
Dance-based
aerobics classes
that fuse together
cardio, strength-
training, kickboxing
and yoga, all into
one fun, energizing
hour.
Amy rst got
acquainted with the joy
of Jazzercise when she
enrolled in a class during her rst semester at
Pacic University. It immediately became my
favorite class so much so that I took it 5 or 6
more times, Amy said.
During her senior year, Amy decided she
wanted to become a Jazzercise instructor. After
several months of training she became certied.
Penny Costley was her mentoring instructor. It
just made sense that I would work for her. And
so she did. Amy has been teaching since December
of 2011.
She has an Exercise Science degree from Pacic

Amy Love knew she wanted to be a farmer. She comes by it honestly, as the fth generation still farming on
the original Love Farm homestead of the early 1900s.
Amy decided she wanted to farm without the use of pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers, much
like her grandfather, and great grandfather did before her. She was an initial member in the OSU Organic Grow-
ers Club.I have a passion to farm organically and I love the idea of feeding people wonderful, healthy food. My
dad has always been open-minded, and so was willing to give it a try and see what I could do on our land,Amy
said. She graduated cum laude from Oregon State University with a degree in Botany and minors in soil science
and horticulture.
Amy started Love Farm Organics in 2006, a Community Supported Agriculture business that provides harvest
shares of produce to member-share-holders. For 24 weeks, from June 1st through October, Love Farm Organics
provide each member a share loaded with home-grown fresh, seasonal produce. We provide just about every-
thing we can possibly grow in our micro-climate, from arugula to zucchini during the growing season! We also
give out many fruits and berries from established plantings which we have transitioned into organic methods.
We now provide food for 200 member families at seven different locations throughout the week, as well
as 2-5 restaurants weekly.
It is a win-win for Amy and her family. My dad gets to stay on the land and retire, and my husband and our
family get to continue with the work of making a living off the land. Amy and her husband have two daughters,
ages 4 and 5.
Know your farmers and where your food comes from. Eat local, farm-fresh, organically-grown foods picked

Kim has been practicing massage for 17 years in Forest Grove in her own
office and in the past at Ballad Town Chiropractic. This year Kim has reduced
her prices. Even though we are in a recession, our bodies still really need help
sometimes says Kim. She helps clients with muscle spasms, stress overload
and all kinds of injuries including auto accident. If a client has been in a car
accident and their doctor prescribes massage, Kim bills auto insurance.
Through continuing education, Kim continually increases the number of
techniques she uses- from thorough muscle manipulation to gentler but also
effective techniques like Cranial Sacral. She does several forms of energy work
which can be very appropriate for reducing stress or speeding healing in an area
which cannot tolerate physical work (i.e. acute injury, surgery or cancer sites).
Kim has studied massage in the Northwest, Canada, and India. The favorite part
of her work is connecting with clients and bringing them relief.

Women in Business 2013
October is National Womens Small Business Month, which offers a great chance to profile
some of the many women in western Washington County who own, manage or play other key roles in local commerce.
Debbi Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields Bakeries, said her business thrived because she followed her competence. What I wanted was to be
allowed to do the thing in the world that I did best which I believed then and believe now is the greatest privilege there is, she said.
When I did that, success found me.
The women featured on these pages have taken those words to heart. We hope you enjoy their stories.

A PLACE TO
EAT, DRINK AND GATHER.
Our selections include local beer, wine and
spirits.
We also have a selection of small plates, soup, salad and delicious paninis.
Urban Decanter rst opened in 2007 and Rebecca purchased it in April of
2012.
I wanted to work in an industry that I was passionate about, Becky says.
Before graduation from college I decided I would enter the food and
beverage industry which led me to purchase Urban Decanter.
Becky grew up on a winery in Gaston and she got to see the wine industry
rst and foremost. Watching her parents make their dream happen led her
down the path to do the same.
When Becky is not at work she enjoys her other passion: Photography! She
loves to take pictures of everything from animals to landscapes. She also
loves to get outdoors and go hiking, take day trips and visit new restaurants.
Becky Kramer has been the owner of
Urban Decanter since April of 2012.

After graduating from Portland Community

Appliances.
It was nice to put my knowledge to use, she
says. She has now worked there for 25 years, full
time in the office and in sales. Van Dykes, which
offer appliance sales and service, was attractive
to her because she values family businesses and loves the Forest Grove
community. What better place to spend her career?
The best part of her job is working with the people she works with.
Becky likes to stay active, likes to laugh and be around happy people.
When she isnt working, she enjoys bicycling, hand bells, volleyball,

Nancy came to the News-Times in 2005 as its associate editor
and education reporter. She was named managing editor of the
News-Times and the Hillsboro Tribune in March 2013.
A graduate of Oregon State University with a degree in
technical journalism, Nancy has been a community journalist
for 33 years and has worked at many Pamplin Media Group
newspapers, including the Beaverton Valley Times, Lake Oswego
Review, West Linn Tidings, Tigard-Tualatin Times and Sherwood
Gazette.
She feels privileged to lead a talented staff covering the news
in western Washington County.
I enjoy working in this community because it is home to a
wide variety of people and
perspectives, Nancy says.
There is a never-ending
supply of interesting folks and
subjects to write about, from
budget-strapped school districts
to local soldiers lost to war on the other side of the globe.
Why community journalism?
Peoples stories need to be told, objectively and with care
and passion, she says. The overarching goal of a community
newspaper is to reflect back to its readers what each town or city
is about.
