Chapter 6 Taking on the establishment Chapter looks at the ways that the historical biblical Jesus specifically challenges

establishment. What was it about his message that got him killed? Note how the religious establishment was threatened then partnered with the political establishment Example of religion leveraging/manipulating politics to get something done-- in this case violence to Jesus and ultimately death of Christ! The 5 Ts Torah - the law- God has spoken to us and given us something Tradition- oral law which supplements written law- we have it figured out- we have the code Tribalism - unique ethic identity Territory holy land - contrast with idea of an inclusive kingdom not isolated to one bit of dirt Temple -sacrificial system- notion of a holy space Each T like a bottle of medicine, which you keep in your pocket Occasionally you take it out and put it on the table and look at it Hold it in your hands- put it by your cheek when you go to sleep Because thou have the cure - that's all you need to do! Jesus then the guy who comes along and says you are missing one thing You haven't opened the bottle Taken the medicine out of the bottle Put it in your mouth Digested it and become cured And do you know what you can do when you have done that Throw away the bottle You don't need the bottle once you have the cure Jews had bonded with all the bottles! They thought it was all about the bottle And they liked the bottle so much that they made a case for the bottle! Identity markers- sacrosanct Jesus takes these on - these unique privilege / responsibilities ie takes on 5Ts ie externalsCauses anger! The 5 Ts today Torah-The bible I carry it around with me, I memorise it - without interacting with it and living out the teachings of scripture- magically becoming more spiritual

When you close the bible after studying it Have you learned more head knowledge that will make you more of a Hypocrite if you don't live it out? Have you increased your Hypocrite quotient? Ie are you going to do what it says? Tradition of the elders - unspoken rules Place for tradition - Issue has it become a hindrance to facilitating good relationship? - We love to codify our Behavior - make it black and white Ie make everything binary Saves us the hard work of thinking things through! Territory- Christian obsession with the holy land Related to the End times - the need for Israel to be reestablished and the return of Christ Temple -Also similar to our church building being a holy space TribalismChristians have persecuted Jews for crucifying Jesus Eg The blood libel- mat 27,v25 as an excuse for persecuting Jews All the people said - His blood will be on us and on our children Interpreted Jews themselves take full responsibility for his crucifixion -No It was the religious establishment -200 people Punishment came in one generation with the destruction of the temple for those who did not follow Jesus teachings Evidence that those who followed Jesus left Jerusalem before the fall of Jerusalem! Movie trivia: The passion of the Christ- this line became centrepiece -caused controversy- was Mel Gibson being anti Semitic - line was requested to be removed - wasnt - in the film the Jews cry out in Aramaic but no subtitles! This event happened in middle of night / break of dayArrest happened at this time because leaders knew the people loved Jesus Religious community filling Pilot's palace - Only 200 people - Sanhedrin plus staff - ie religious establishment calling for his death -not that many 10000 people in temple system staff on rotating basis - from Josephus Luke 23 v27 Following him was a large crowd- Especially women mourning and lamenting That is the reaction of the Jewish people in general contrast with religious establishment
