Dear colleagues, With great pleasure we invite you on the 9th November 2013 in the Congress Hall of the National Rehabilitation Centre, where the symposium on the: Spinal cord injury (SCI) and Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction will take place. As you already know, SCI not only causes motor disability but also affects other systems of the body depending on the level and completeness of the lesion. A major problem that affects both the overall medical condition and the everyday life of a paraplegic person is bowel dysfunction, called neurogenic bowel. In clinical symptomatology, bowel dysfunction could lead to serious constipation or fecal incontinence or even a combination of the two. Apart from the pathophysiological change at the lower digestive tract, there is an indirect effect at the bladder function, the sexual activity or the actual triggering of the autonomic nervous system and, as a result, the appearance of the autonomic dysreflexia syndrome. During the last couple of years, there has been a genuine scientific interest in researching and management of the neurogenic bowel, which led to numerous medical publications and clinical practice guidelines. Our main purpose at this educational symposium is to highlight the main problems of the lower digestive tract dysfunction in SCI patients, from the acute phase, during Rehabilitation and the process of reintegration. Moreover, it is highly important to convey our concerns and experiences of assessment and therapeutic intervention to achieve regular bowel evacuation without fecal incontinence, and flatulence, and at a desired time. Training the patient to actually manage their own bowel evacuation at a desired time without any accident , is essential so, as to gain their independence and leading to full professional and social reintegration. Your participation will contribute to deeply understand the neurogenic bowel as a new pathological element, which has previously been underestimated or conceived as a taboo topic.
