Generic Level: Control/Utilization 2. 20 Softballs 3. 6 Softball Bats

Focus of Lesson: Fielding Student Performance Objectives (SPO): (NASPE #___; MA CF #___ ; Task/Activity #___)
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

(P) students should be able to field the ball correctly when the ball is hit to them either in the air or on the ground. (NASPE #__1_; MA CF #_2.17_ ; Task/Activity #_1,2_) (C) students should understand where to run after hitting the ball as well as throwing the ball to the right place when given the opportunity. (NASPE #__2_; MA CF #_2.19__ ; Task/Activity #__1,2_) (A) Students should respect the equipment and the teacher at all times throughout the lesson. (NASPE #__5_; MA CF #__2.26_ ; Task/Activity #_Entire lesson_)

Check each objective is it specific? Is it achievable? Is it developmentally appropriate? Teacher Performance Objectives During the lesson the teacher will: 1. Explain all of the safety and rules for the lesson. 2. Explain all of the skill cues as well as the start and stop signals. 3. While pitching in the activity make sure to give as much specific feedback from everyone not just the people who are batting in front of the teacher. 4. Refrain from calling the students guys.

Special Considerations What are the safety concerns? What is unique about the students in this class? During the lesson there is a possibility of many softballs and bats being used at the same time. This can get dangerous and the students need to make sure that they are aware of their surroundings while using the equipment.

10-15 Warm up: students will start by jogging around the gym for 2 minutes. After this the teacher will lead stretches. While the stretches are going on the teacher will inform the students about the stop and start signals and rules during the lesson.

15-20

Transition: Students will walk outside to the softball field and sit on the bench without touching any of the equipment and face the teacher.

SSSSSSSSSS

to make up for. Fielding is essentially putting your body in the path of the ball to the best of your ability and using your glove to stop and control the ball. The most important aspect to Fielding is keeping your eye on the ball. You should watch the ball all the way into the point where it is in your glove.

Refining: Skill cues for fielding.

Ground Balls:
22-25 Glove starts on the ground with your palm up Align the incoming ball with the middle of your body. Bend your knees in an athletic position with your chest slightly leaning forward. Put your non-glove hand hovering over your glove to help secure the ball. __________fence__________ SSSSSSSSSS T

Softballs in the air:

If the ball is above your waist use the thumb down method with your glove while catching the ball. If the ball is below your waist, use the thumb up,

palm up method for catching the ball. Align the incoming ball with the middle of your body

_______fence_____________ SSSSSSSSSS Demonstration: The teacher will choose a student to help demonstrate both fielding ground balls and fielding balls that are in the air. The student will first roll the ball to the teacher to demonstrate softballs on the ground. Next the student will toss a ball below the teachers waist while still in the air to demonstrate catching a ball with the thumb up palm up method. Finally, the student will now toss a ball to the teacher that is above their waist to demonstrate the catching with your thumb down method. After this the student and teacher will demonstrate the first activity. S

25-30

30-32

Transition: Students will partner up and take a glove and ball and spread out amongst the field but 20 feet away from their partner. Students also should make sure that they stand at least 10 feet away from other groups.

Activity 1: 32-42 Students will start by partnering up 20 feet away from each other. Without a glove to start, the students will roll the ball to each other and work on properly fielding a ground ball with the thumb up palm up method. After 2 minutes of practicing ground balls the students will practice catching balls in the air without a glove on to show proper technique with the hands. After two minutes of practicing this, the students will be told to now use their gloves and practice both catching ground balls and balls in the air with a glove. Extension harder: As the students improve, they will be offered to start to move back and increase the distance from their partner. Extension Easier: If the students are struggling to complete the task from 20 feet away they will be told that they can move closer in order to help make it easier to field the ball properly.

Transition: The students will now be split into groups of 10. The teacher will do this quickly by having everyone line up and count off by 1, 2 and 3 so that the transition is quick and effective. Activity 2: Students will now break up so that team number one is

batting first, team number two is in the infield and team number 3 is in the outfield. After team number one bats they will go play in the outfield, the team in the outfield will go to the infield, and the team in the infield will go to bat. Every person on the team will bat one time and then the teams will rotate. It is very important that the team batting does not throw the bat after they hit the ball, they must drop the bat after they hit the ball. The on deck batter has to make sure that they are a safe distance away from the batter. The only person who is allowed to have a bat in their hands is the one who is batting. Another way to score will be if you record an out you get a point for your team. For instance if a fly ball is caught by an outfielder then the outfielder team would be awarded a point.

72-74

Transition: Students will put all of the equipment back in the proper place where they got it. Next they will meet where the original meeting place was.

74-76

Closure: The teacher will go over the skill cues and the purpose of the skill cues.

If there is a ground ball what way do you hold your hand with the glove? Why do we use the thumb up palm up technique while fielding a ground ball? How comfortable did everyone feel with using the fielding techniques? See who can name two skill cues for fielding in general.
