With the SOD523 (SC-79) package, Vishay offers a small, space saving 2-pin SMT PIN-diode with low inductance and high reliability. Compared to the SOD323 package, the SOD523 needs only ~40 % of the mounting area on the PCB. Due to the very short unbent leads, the SOD523 offers higher reliability and better electrical performance. Optimized for mobile and TV applications the Vishay Semiconductors BAR63V-02V, BAR64V-02V, BAR65V02V, and BA892V-02V are characterized by low reverse capacitance and low forward resistance. With these diodes, RF signals from 100 MHz up to 3 GHz can be switched and controlled with low loss, high isolation, and low distortion. Available in chip sizes 0201, 0402, and 0603, the HPC capacitor exhibits greater capacitance stability at higher frequencies. In a typical application, such as impedance matching between the power amplifier (PA) and the antenna in a mobile phone, any small drift in frequency will cause a large change in capacitance. The large change in capacitance will cause a mismatch in impedance, resulting in much of the signal output of the PA being reflected back into the phone instead of being transmitted by the antenna. The phone will then attempt to boost the output signal, draining the battery without increasing the transmitted signal. Consider, for example, the case in which a user requires a 13-pF capacitor at 2.7 GHz. Capacitors are supplied as the capacitance 17 value measured at 1 MHz. The user consults 16 the characterization data and finds that a value LTCC + ThinFilm 15 8.2 0.1 pF of 13 pF at 2.7 GHz demands an 8.2-pF LTCC 14 or TF capacitor. The drawback to working with HPC 12 pF 1 % 13 these technologies is twofold. The capacitor 12 is working in a region where the capacitance 11 will change quickly with a small change of 10 HPC 8.2 pF 0.1 pF frequency, and the LTCC and TF curves 9 both diverge with a wider tolerance drift as 8 0 500 1000 1500 2000 2500 3000 3500 frequency increases. As a result, the user must Frequency (MHz) specify and order a tighter tolerance at 1 MHz to remain within the allowable error envelope at the operating frequency. In comparison, HPC silicon capacitors provide a much more uniform capacitance curve over a change in frequency. In contrast to the capacitance increase of the LTCC and TF devices with a rise in frequency, the HPC silicon capacitor demonstrates a stable capacitance value of just 8.8 pF at 2.7 GHz.

In addition to dimensions as small as 0.010" (0.25 mm) by 0.020" (0.5 mm), the Vishay Electro-Films Microwave Resistor series (MIB, MIC, MID, MIF) features a strip-line design that enables the design of higherperformance end products by providing a solution specifically optimized for microwave and RF requirements. Typical applications include amplifiers, oscillators, attenuators, couplers, and filters.

Devices in the Microwave Resistor series feature a microwave resistance range of 20 to 1 k and an overall resistance range to 20 k. The devices feature a maximum operating voltage of 100 V, a dielectric breakdown voltage of 400 V, and 25 mW to 200 mW maximum DC power ratings at +70 C. The MIB, MIC, MID, and MIF microwave resistor chips are built with an alumina substrate and gold terminations. They can be attached with conductive epoxy, ribbon-bonded, or wire-bonded. Other Vishay devices that are suitable for use with the Microwave Resistor series include wire-bondable capacitor chips, inductor chips, user-trim resistor chips, and TMR multi-value microwave products. The Vishay Sfernice CH series thin film microwave chip resistors feature sizes down to 20 x 16 mils. These high-frequency resistors are used in jitter tolerance testers for characterization of serial gigabit devices. The components are designed in such a way that their internal reactance is very small (LC down to 1 x 10 - 24). When correctly mounted and utilized, they function as almost pure resistors on a very wide range of frequencies, up to 20 GHz. The Vishay Beyschlag HF MELF resistor series (MMU 0102 HF, MMA 0204 HF, and MMB 0207 HF) feature low-inductance and non-helical trimming, making them suitable for frequencies up to 10 GHz. They can be used in standard or power mode with P70 ratings from 0.2 W up to 1.0 W. A special laser is used to achieve the target value by smoothly cutting a non helical pattern with a resulting low inductance in the resistive layer without damaging the ceramics. For low power applications the Vishay Beyschlag Thin Film resistor MCT 0603 HF combines small size with excellent HF performance over 10 GHz for higher resistance values. Vishays HPC series of high-precision silicon RF surface-mount chip capacitors feature unprecedented capacitance vs. frequency stability. This feature enhances high-frequency applications because frequency drift in the circuit does not cause any significant change in capacitance over a wide range around the working frequency. As a result, HPC capacitors are significantly more stable than traditional capacitors.

To take advantage of the flatter curve of the HPC silicon capacitor, the circuit designer must use a 12-pF HPC capacitor in an application that would normally require an 8.2-pF LTCC or TF capacitor. Because the characteristic curves of the LTCC and TF technologies rise so quickly at higher frequencies, the HPC value that would intersect these curves would be different depending upon the frequency of interest. To identify the HPC value and part number that would replace LTCC and TF technologies in a particular application, the designer must insert the capacitance value used for the other capacitor types, along with the operating frequency, into the conversion program. An online conversion guide created exactly for that purpose is available for use or download at http://www.vishay.com/capacitors/silicon/ calculator-list

emitter diodes. Combining a photo detector and preamplifier in a single package, Vishay IR receiver modules deliver reliability in remote control applications thanks to an intelligent automatic gain control (AGC) feature that enhances immunity against ambient light disturbances. Companion IR emitter diodes operate with low forward voltages, yet deliver high radiant power and radiant intensity. Vishay has introduced the TFDU7100 transceiver which integrates a remote control receiver and an IrDA transceiver into a single, 3-lens surface mount package for the PC market. Media Center and V IRED Anode R1 Notebook PCs are used by consumers to watch V V R2 C1 C2 full-length, feature films. These consumers want the Ground GND R3 added convenience of a remote control while still RC Rxd RCRxd needing IrDA communication for easy-to-use picture SD SD and MP3 file sharing. Designers of PC housings, Txd Txd wanting to limit the number of daylight filtering Rxd Rxd windows, are being forced to choose between IrDA IRED Cathode and RC. The TFDU7100 eliminates the need to make this choice; instead designers get the best of both in a single package from the worlds leaders in IrDA communication and Remote Control technology. For Remote Control, the TFDU7100 receives signals with carrier frequencies from 36 kHz to 38 kHz over a minimum distance of 18 meters. For IrDA communication, the TFDU7100 supports all IrDA data rates up to 4 Mbit/s over the inherently secure distance of 1 meter.

Power Switching
As the trend continues towards smaller portable devices with multiple functions, the demands on batteries are greater than ever. Power MOSFETs can play a key role in extending battery run times by switching power more efficiently, and smaller, thinner MOSFETs help enable feature-rich portable devices by minimizing the space needed for power switching circuitry. Vishay Siliconix offers power MOSFETs in a wide range of packages, with footprints as small as 2.3 mm2 and profiles as thin as 0.6 mm. Vishays innovative packaging technologies include the chipscale MICRO FOOT, which dramatically decreases space required for a given level of on-resistance, and PowerPAK, which significantly reduces thermal resistance and increases maximum power dissipation for a given footprint size. The Vishay Siliconix MICRO FOOT MOSFET package family provides the lowest on-resistance in a footprint area of only 2.25 mm2. This miniature chipscale package, with dimensions of 1.5 mm x 1.5 mm, offers an ideal solution for space-constrained portable applications such as cellular phones and PDAs. Providing a more than 70 % size reduction compared to standard devices in TSOP-6 or SOT23 packages, MICRO FOOT provides an excellent thermal solution (maximum PD of 2.77 W @ 25 C) compared to the 1.6 W PD of TSOP-6 and SOT-23 packages. The first Vishay Siliconix PowerPAK MOSFETs in the SO-8 and 1212-8 formats were designed to provide a thermally efficient replacement for devices in the DPAK and standard SO-8 packages. Now with PowerPAK ChipFET, Vishay offers a thermally efficient replacement for load, PA, charger, and battery MOSFET switches in the TSOP-6 package. By comparison to the TSOP-6, PowerPAK ChipFET devices feature 75 % lower thermal resistance values, a 33 % smaller footprint area, and a 25 % thinner height profile (0.8 mm). To help minimize power consumption and increase battery life, many of the ASICs found in portable electronics systems are designed to operate at core supply voltages between 1.5 V and 1.65 V. Until now, however, the lack of power MOSFETs with guaranteed turn-on operation below 1.8 V has made it difficult for designers to take advantage of these low core supply voltages without the use of level-shifting circuitry, which adds complexity while increasing power consumption. Vishay addresses this problem with breakthrough power MOSFETs that work directly from 1.2-V and 1.5-V core supply voltages with on-resistance as low as 43 milliohms. With their low threshold voltage and guaranteed specifications at a 1.2-V or 1.5-V gate drive, these devices eliminate the need for levelshifting circuitry and maximize the power-saving benefits of low operating voltages in battery-operated systems. Vishays 1.2-V and 1.5-V MOSFET families include p-channel devices in the LITTLE FOOT TSOP-6, 1206-8 ChipFET, and SC-70 packages, as well as in the chipscale MICRO FOOT format. Also available is a 1.5-V n-channel MICRO FOOT device.

The TFDU6300 and TFDU6301 from Vishay Semiconductors are new infrared transceivers that support the IrDA high-speed data transfer rates for beaming digital pictures directly from camera phones to TVs, printers, and other enabled camera phones. The TFDU6300 and TFDU6301 provide the fast infrared (FIR) 4 Mbit/s data rate in a miniaturized package that fits easily into todays compact mobile phones, digital still cameras, and TVs. With dimensions of only 2.5 mm (H) x 3.0 mm (W) x 8.3 mm (L), the transceivers require minimal battery power due to their low receive operating (or idle) current of 1.8 mA and shutdown current of 0.01 A. Over 240 million IrDA-enabled mobile phones were sold in 2005. Camera phones and printers are using FIR transceivers as they adopt a new IrDA application called IrSimpleShotTM. IrSimpleShot was developed to set free the billions of images trapped in camera phones and digital still cameras. Based on proven IrDA and Remote Control technologies, IrSimpleShot allows users to beam photos directly to TVs and printers quickly and easily, without the need for cables or a complicated software set-up. Vishay is the global leader in 4-Mbit/s transceivers. Over 90 % of all IrDA-enabled notebook PCs use Vishays TFDU6102 FIR transceiver, and the TFBS6711 and TFBS6712 are the industrys smallest FIR transceivers. The leading chip suppliers in the MP3 and MPEG4 market have integrated the IrDA protocol and physical layers to support 16-Mbit/s wireless communication. Leading manufacturers reference Vishays VFIR IrDA transceivers in their designs. With data transfer rates five times faster than Bluetooth, the TFDU8108 and TFBS8608 from Vishay Semiconductors are compliant to the IrDA physical layer standard for VFIR infrared data communication, supporting IrDA speeds up to 16 Mbit/s (VFIR) and carrier based remote control modes up to 2 MHz.

Wireless Weighing Systems

In recent years, Vishay has made several small acquisitions that have significantly expanded its strain gage business. With these acquisitions, Vishay entered the global markets for strain-gage-based transducers and instruments used in the weighing industry, and also implemented a strategy of vertical market integration: from resistance strain gages (in which Vishay has a strong worldwide position), to

transducers (the metallic structures to which strain gages are cemented), to the electronic instruments and systems that measure and control output of the transducers Vishay, through acquisition, also has enhanced its wireless communications capabilities. By taking advantage of synergies between its wireless communications, digital weighing, and load cell technologies, Vishay has been able to develop a new family of wireless load cells for remote weighing applications. The Vishay Revere JetWeigh-WTM Wireless Aircraft Weighing System integrates state-of-the-art technology in wireless communication, digital weighing processing, and high-accuracy hermetically sealed load cells. The integration of technologies from Vishay Transducers and Vishay RFWaves results in an accurate, highly-reliable wireless aircraft weighing system that is robust and easy to use. Utilizing a rugged hand held PC, the system operates with up to five remote wireless load cells, eliminating the need for cumbersome cable connections. The color touch-screen user interface provides easy step-by-step operation and can provide printouts of the data collected. Operating in the worldwide license-free ISM band, the system has a communication range of more than 70 meters and utilizes battery power, with up to 50 hours between recharging. The JetWeigh-W system contains three to five wireless load cells, a PC user terminal, a thermal printer, power adaptors and power cord, and a center-of-gravity accessory kit all in a rugged fiberglass carrying case.

In protecting very sensitive mobile electronics such as mobile phone handsets, smart phones, laptop computers, PDAs, digital cameras, and MP3 players against electronic discharge pulses caused by user contact with displays and keypads, the VESD05A8-HN2 and VESD05A6-HA3 also protect power supply and data transfer connections against discharge spikes. The devices superior protection capability in a single compact package not only saves space, enabling design of smaller and/or more robust electronics, but also reduces manufacturers component costs. To protect modern high-energy battery packs and the coupled mobile electronics, the use of fast protecting devices becomes a necessity. The very quick-acting fuse characteristics of the Vishay Beyschlag MFU series of Thin Film Flat Chip fuses makes the fuses ideal for this purpose. The MFU series fuses are over-current protection devices used to avoid risks of fire hazards caused by overload situations or short circuits on electronic devices. The small size enables engineers to design very small power circuits. Available in standard sizes of 0603, 0805, and 1206, and with a rated current range of 0.5 A up to 6.3 A, the MFU series increases the safety level of electronic devices such as cell phones, game consoles, and motion control units. For even smaller size requirements, the MFU 0402 is available on request. A highly controlled manufacturing process, combined with Vishays advanced thin film technology, yields very quick-acting fuse characteristics for highly predictable performance even in sensitive electronic systems. An extensive testing procedure is performed on every device, each of which features a coating that protects against electrical, mechanical, and climatic hazards. The MFU chip fuse series is the first chip fuse which covers the safety requirements out of the UL 248-14 and IEC 60127-4. Complying with both safety standards will offer the opportunity to develop only one electronic design for the global market instead of two designs. The battery power sources of wireless equipment often have risks of wrong connections or unrectified power flows brought forth by power supply failures. Schottky Rectifiers and Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) from Vishay Semiconductors are available for polarity protection in miniature SMP (DO-220AA) packages with up to 3-A forward current capacities. The Vishay Semiconductors SSxP Series surface-mount Schottky barrier rectifiers are superior products for handheld wireless equipment with high current densities. The low forward voltage drop of the SSxP rectifiers improves power efficiency, limiting power loss. And the low thermal resistance (Rth J-A 95 oC/W and Rth J-C 20 oC/W) are among lowest thermal resistance in industry, with very low heat generation during system operation. The miniature SMP package also offers 35 % PCB space savings compared to SMA package products and is an alternative to industrial standard SOD-123 package products.

ESD and Surge Protection

As wireless devices become even smaller, protection of sensitive components against electrostatic discharge (ESD) becomes even more important. Vishay offers a complete line of ESD protection diodes and arrays in surface-mount packages including the SOT-23, SOT-323, and SO-8. The fixed telecom infrastructure supporting wireless communications requires devices that offer protection against over-temperature conditions and mains-borne transients. Vishays varistor line offers solutions for switchmode power supplies and load protection. The VESD05A8-HN2 from Vishay Semiconductors, packaged in the 2.0-mm by 2.0-mm LLP70 9A, features nine contact pads and a monolithic die with eight protection diodes, a quantity of diodes that was only available in the much larger 5.0 mm by 5.0 mm SO-8 package previously. As a result, the new array provides bidirectional asymmetrical (BiAs) protection for eight data lines, or bidirectional symmetrical (BiSy) protection for seven data lines. The VESD05A6-HA3 is packaged in the exceptionally small 1.6-mm by 1.6-mm LLP75-7A and features seven contact pads and a monolithic die with six protection diodes. The array offers bidirectional asymmetrical (BiAs) protection for six data lines or bidirectional symmetrical (BiSy) protection for five data lines. These leadless SMD arrays meet a high industry standard for ESD protection, supplying transient protection of 30 kV (air) and 30 kV (contact) as per IEC 61000-4-2, as well as 5-A protection against lightning as per IEC 61000-4-5. Their low capacitance minimizes distortion to the operating signal on protected lines. 10 Vishay Intertechnology

The devices low ESR values help to reduce power consumption, while their uniquely compact case size enables the design of lighter, smaller, more portable end products. In some applications, these high-capacitance devices may be used to replace several capacitors with lower ratings, allowing designers to conserve board real estate and decrease component count. The 592D capacitors in the X case size are available with 4-V and 6.3-V ratings, and capacitances of 1000 F, 1500 F, 2200 F, and 3300 F. They feature a very low maximum ESR range, including 0.055 ohms at +25 C and 100 kHz for the 3300-F model. The entire 592D family of TANTAMOUNT conformal-coated solid tantalum capacitors spans a capacitance range of 1 F to 3300 F, a profile height from 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm, and voltage ratings from 4 V to 35 V. They are rated for an operating temperature range of 55 C to +85 C, or up to +125 C with voltage derating. The Vishay Sprague 552D capacitors have maximum ESR ratings at 100-kHz range from 25 m to 90 m, and voltage ratings from 4 WVDC to 6.3 WVDC. Available in six low-profile EIA-standard case sizesB, M, T, U, V, and Xthe devices offer a wide variety of sizes and ratings that simplify design of compact electronic systems. With their broad capacitance range and no ignition failure mode, the 552D capacitors may be used in applications for which standard tantalum devices are not well suited. Low ESR values reduce power consumption and the conformal-coated construction enables the manufacture of thinner, more space-efficient end products. The DG2032 dual SPDT analog switch and DG2034 4:1 multiplexer from Vishay Siliconx are the first products in the QFN-12 package to combine low 3 on-resistance, low power consumption, and superior switch performance while operating over a wide power supply and analog signal range of 1.8 V to 5.5 V. Unlike other small analog switches aimed at audio only, these parts cater to the needs of both audio and higher-speed analog signal switching for port sharing/extension, data acquisition, PC Cards (PCMCIA), audio/video signal routing, speaker/headset switching, and similar applications in end products such as cell phones, digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players, and handheld test equipment. While retaining the desired switch performance at very low power consumption, these devices boast high switching speeds and outstanding linearity over the full supply and signal voltage range. The DG2032 dual SPDT analog switch features a low on-resistance specification of 3 at 2.7 V, with wide dynamic performance better than -80 dB for both crosstalk and off-isolation at 1 MHz. With its fast switching speeds (25 ns turn-on, 13 ns turn-off), low onresistance, high bandwidth, and low charge injection, the DG2032 is well suited for switching a wide range of audio and video signals. The DG2034 4:1 analog multiplexer offers low on-resistance of 4 and off-isolation and crosstalk of -55 dB at 10 MHz. The turn-on time is fast at 25 ns. The DG2034 is available in the QFN-12 and MSOP-10 packages.
