PART-A
Q1. (a) In the reciprocating air compressor the air is pressed at the rate 4 3 /min at 1 bar, 27 up to pressure of 8 bar following index of compression as 1.2. The compression occur in two stages eith inter cooling at optimum intercooler pressure and perfect intercooling. Compare the work input required if the same compression occur in single stage. Also compare the work input if same compression occur two stages with imperfect cooling up to 30 at the optimum intercooling pressure. Consider Cp=1.0032KJ/Kg K and R=0.287KJ/Kg K. (14) (b) Describe, for reciprocating compressor, the factor responsible for deviation of hypothetical indicator diagram to actual indicator diagram. (6) Q2. A reciprocating air compressor has cylinder with 24cm bore and 36cm stroke. Compressor admits air at 1bar, 17 and compresses it up to 6bar.Compressor runs at 120rpm. considering compressor to single acting and single stage, determine mean effective pressure and the horse power required to run compressor following isothermal process and polytropic process with index of 1.3. Also find isothermal efficiency when compression is of polytropic and adiabatic type. (20) Q3. (a) Sketch and describe working of Lancashire Boiler and Babcock and Wilcox Boiler. (12) (b) Enlist the requirements of good boiler. (8)

Q4. (a) Determine the height of chimney required in the boiler having natural drought equivalent to 20mm of water. The fuel gases are at a temperature of 300 , atmospheric air temperature is 27 and 18 Kg of fuel is required in the boiler. (6) (b) Prepare and explain hat balance sheet on per minute basis for a boiler. (14)

PART-B
Q5. (a) A single stage Impulse Turbine rotor has a blade ring diameter of 500mm and rotates at a speed of 10,000rpm. The nozzle angle is 20 and steam leaves at the nozzle with a velocity of 900m/s. The blades are equiangular and the blade friction factor is 0.85. Construct the velocity diagram for the blades and determine the inlet angle of the blade for shock less entry of steam. Determine : (14) (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) The diagram power for a steam flow of 750 kg/hr, The diagram efficiency, The axial thrust and The loss of KE due to friction

(b) How does a reaction turbine blade differ from a impulse turbine? (6) Q6. (a) A multi stage steam turbine has steam entering at 20 bar, 300 and leaving at 0.05 bar and 0.95 dry. Determine reheat factor, condition of steam at exit from each of five stages considering efficiency ratio of 0.555 and all stages doing equal work. (14) (b) Differentiate between impulse and reaction turbine. (6) Q7. (a) Derive the relation for maximum discharge per unit area through nozzle using concept of critical pressure ratio. (12) (b) Write a short note on the following : (i) nozzle efficiency (ii) velocity coefficient (8)

(iii) discharge coefficient (iv) critical velocity Q8. (a) Differentiate between jet condenser and surface condenser. (6)

(b) A steam condenser is supplied with 1000 kg/min steam in 0.9 dry state. The pressure of suction of air extraction pump on condenser is 70cm of Hg and Barometer reads 77cm of Hg. Temperature in suction pipe is 30 and air leaks at the rate of 0.0005 kg per Kg of steam. Cooling water temperature gets increased by dry air extractor and cooling water circulation rate in Kg/min.
