Running head: Diversity Organizations

Introduction The status has grown from women having very little rights and power to women becoming leaders and has more rights than men in some circumstances (Schaefer, 2012). Women always have been considered to be homemakershomemakers. Women in the opinions of some were supposed to have the children and take care of home because that is all that they were capable of. In the past, a White American woman did not carry the same status of her husband. She was not allowed to vote or play a part in politics (Schaefer, 2012). When it came to rightsrights, a white American woman had very little more rights than African Americans. For example, if a woman had land and she married. The property now belonged to her husband. A woman was also her husbands property. She had to follow her husband and do what he said or she might be subject to punishment. The voice of women often went ignored and caused all women to be suppressed. Little girls would often be taken out of school at young ages to go home and help their families. They would later, as young as 15, marry and have children of their own. These practices were not uncommon. Women of color were subject to oppression and had no rights. African American women were the property of their slave owners. Legally, slave women were not allowed to marry other slaves unless they had the permission of their slave owner. It was still a possibility of them being sold (Schaefer, 2012). Good information on history of womens struggles Through the many years of suppression women are now able to vote, own their own property, join the military, and have a political opinion (Schaefer, 2012). There are women that hold seats

in Congress and run for office. For example, Hillary Clinton ran for president in 2008. She did not win because many people believed that running the nation was a job for a man. Many jobs have accepted women into leadership positions (Schaefer, 2013). There are men and women that qualify for the same jobs and now work together. The problem of sexual harassment for women still exists in the workplace (Womens Rights, 2013). Good progress cited The media and society has constructed the concept of how individuals are defined as masculine and feminine (Schaefer, 2012). For example, in society a male needs to have masculine characteristics in order to be accepted. If a male has feminine characteristics, he is assumed to be homosexualhomosexual. Individuals stereotype others try to and identify their sexual orientation. The media depicts how individuals should be viewed. The media in the United States illustrates the perfect woman to be thin with very little body fat. This can lead a young, woman to become anorexic or bulimic because she feels that she needs to be thin, in order to be accepted. Other women may feel the need to diet. The media and society play an important role in how individuals portray themselves. Individuals that feel like they fit in with the rest of society are less likely to feel judged. Good challenges identified Discrimination and prejudice have been the issue for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual (LGBT) people. Individuals have been violently assaulted and killed because of their sexual orientation (LGBT, 2013). There have been many movements and improvements for LGBT people but not as many for other groups. Homosexuality was illegal before the 1970s. Heterosexuality was the only accepted sexual orientation. The LGBT people would meet in secret gay bars until police raided them. The GLBT people eventually took a stand and protested against the police in New York City in the 1960s (LGBT, 2013). Those riots were known as The Stonewall Riots.

The movements of the LGBT people have improved their communities throughout the world. The GLBT people are accepted more throughout society today than 30 years ago. Some individuals still oppose homosexuality, but it is against the law to discriminate against this group. Homosexual couples are able to get married in 13 U.S. states (LGBT, 2013). The first state to legalize homosexual marriage was Massachusetts. Homosexual couples are allowed to openly adopt children. As of September 20, 2011, homosexuals were allowed to openly serve in the Army under the Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy. Anti-discrimination laws have been put into place to protect LGBT people from discrimination in both the workplace and society. Equal pay for both women and men has been an issue for many years. President Obama passed the Lilly Ledbetter Act making it a law that women and men should be paid legally (Womens Rights, 2013). This was very beneficial for women. Sexual harassment is still an issue that exists for women. It has decreased because of the laws enforced but it still exists. There is also the issue that women and young girls are more likely to suffer poverty more than men. Marriage among the LGBT people is still a political and social issue. Homosexual marriage is legal but there are still many states that refuse to legalize homosexual marriage. LGBT people are still refused jobs because of their sexual orientation. Good information on discrimination faced by members of LGBT community Conclusion The status of both women and LGBT people has improved for the better. ButHowever, there is room for improvement. Society is more accepting of both groups, women more than the LGBT people. LGBT people are able to get better jobs that they might have been denied for 30 years ago. The roles for women and men have been switched. Women are able to secure more stable

jobs than men, making them the breadwinner of the household. Men are staying home and taking care of the children.
