INTRODUCTION: 3G Basics
1. What is 3G? o 3G stands for Third Generation mobile technology; Aside from standard voice calls, text messages, and emails, 3G allows mobile users to perform Internet browsing, multimedia streaming and large file downloading at broadband speeds, make video calls, and send videos to other 3G users. o The first generation (1G) of mobile phones consisted of analog models that emerged in the 1980s. This generation was characterized by SIM cloning and the lack of/poor performace of data services (sending/receiving files, access to network services, etc.). The second generation (2G) appeared about 10 years later. This generation was characterized by the emergence of the first digital mobile networks (GSM or Global System for Mobile communication), high-quality local, international and trans-national voice calls and SMS. 2.5G is a 2G network equipped with General Packet Radio Service or GPRS. With GPRS, mobile phones can access data services and the Internet at dial-up speeds (around 33-64kbps in actual speed) while on-the-move. 2.75G is a 2G or 2.5G network equipped with Enhanced Data GSM Environment or EDGE. EDGE can be treated as an enhancement of GPRS. EDGE allows for faster data access and Internet browsing speeds (up to a maximum of 384kbps). 3G was developed to address the need for more speed, mobility, and bandwidth when accessing data services, network services, and the Internet. Theoretically, 3G will provide speeds of 128kbps while in a moving car, 384kbps when moving at pedestrian speed, and up to 2Mbps in stationary situations. However, upon launch and during its early months of operation, a 3G network will most likely provide a maximum of 384kbps in stationary situations, before upgrades are put in place to increase its speed.
2.
Why do I need all this speed? o Presently, with technologies such as SMS, WAP and GPRS, limited internet information can be delivered to mobile phones. 3G opens up the door to deliver a much richer range of services including full and high-speed web surfing experience, video (video calls, mail, news clips, video conferencing) and multiple forms of information and entertainment. What can 3G do? What are examples of 3G services? o 3G allows mobile users to browse the internet, stream multimedia files and download large files at faster rates - about 7x faster than dial-up speeds or 6x faster than GPRS speeds. o o Aside from standard voice calls and SMS, users are also able to make video calls, do video conferencing and send videos to other 3G users. Some 3G services/applications defined: Video calling / video conferencing - a mobile-to-mobile call that can be made over a 3G network where both audio and video are transmitted and real-time, so that the callers can both see and hear each other. Video sharing - a service that enables two subscribers to view the same video, or for one user to show the person they are talking to video direct from their phone.
3.
Browsing - just like browsing on the internet; 3G phones have built-in browsers for surfing the internet, and the colored displays and faster data speeds allows for a surfing experience not too far from using your PC or laptop. Downloading - just like downloading from the internet; 3G data speeds will allow downloading of larger files such as attachments, music and video clips, even when using mobile phones. Streaming - just like streaming on the internet; the audio/video file is streamed directly from onto the handset (whether live or archived), so you can watch the content in real-time. Multiplayer network gaming Push-to services (push-to-talk, push-to-see, push-to-record, etc.) Real-time location-based and location-finding services Mobile-TV and video-on-demand

you are moving from and into have 3G coverage. In other words, Wi-Fi will provide you high-speed Internet access in nomadic/stationary situations, while 3G will provide you with fast (faster than GPRS/EDGE though slower than Wi-Fi) Internet access in mobile situations even while in a moving car. o 7. The call generally stays the same.
What can it do for me? What are its functional benefits for me as an individual? What can it do for my business? What can it do for my organizations people/employees? o 3G offers full mobility for executives, professionals and individuals on the go. This means enhanced productivity by allowing people to always stay connected, wherever they may be, in 3G coverage areas. o o Video calling and sharing offers more intimacy between 2 parties. Business deals can be done over video calls. Physical location checks and updates and can be done by video sharing. Internet access can be done anytime, anywhere, even while on the move whether directly on the mobile phone, via a 3G data card, or by using the phone as a modem. Streaming and downloading on 3G are a lot faster and better/clearer than on GPRS or EDGE and gives you a broadband-like experience in terms of speed. Access to a wider range of information, including corporate intranets, and sending/receiving of files and attachments are done with ease and speed. Employees who spend some of their working hours at home, accountants who do audits at client premises, on-site maintenance engineers who need access to detailed instruction manuals, mobile emergency services who need a video link with a hospital or doctor for specialized advice are several situations where 3G plays a valuable role.
8.
Can I replace my offices leased lines with 3G? Can I replace my offices internet connection and switch to 3G? o With 3G, it is really the mobility and convenience of being able to access the internet wherever you are through acceptable or faster speeds than what is currently out there. Will it be cheaper to use Internet over 3G vs over Wi-Fi / DSL / LAN? o Not necessarily. It depends on ones usage.
9.
11. When will Globe commercially launch 3G? o Globe is preparing to commercially launch 3G within 2006, dependent on NTCs awarding of 3G licenses.
12. Will it be a nationwide 3G coverage? o Globe will prioritize specific sites when it rolls out 3G. It will initially be available in the CBD areas of Makati and Metro Cebu. The 3G network roll out will proceed gradually for the next 5 years until 80% of all provincial capitals and major towns and 80% of all major cities nationwide are covered. 13. Are 3G services more expensive? Will it be offered on both prepaid and postpaid? What are the packages or plans? Can the subscription be for data only? o Globe is currently working on the best possible plans, service bundles, packages and offers for all potential 3G subscribers. 14. Can I use 3G services when Im out of the country? Which other countries have partnerships with Globe for 3G? o Ideally, you will be able to use 3G services while on International Roaming in foreign networks with which Globe has 3G partnerships with. As more and more countries move to 3G, roaming on 3G will be as seamless as roaming on 2G. o Currently, Globe has 3G roaming partnerships with Orange in Hong Kong, Singtel in Singapore, and NTT and Docomo in Japan. This means that when our subscribers roam on these networks within 3G coverage areas, internet access, streaming and downloading are on 3G speeds.
15. If I want to be on 3G, what do I need to do? Do I need to change plans, SIMs, and/or handsets? Do I need to churn, upgrade or migrate? o Mobile subscribers will need a 3G capable handset and a 3G provisioned SIM to use 3G coverage areas. As soon as the packages are ready, your account manager and/or Globe will inform you of the necessary steps to be on 3G. They will also assist you in performing the necessary configurations to set up your phone for 3G. 16. Is there really a market in the Philippines for 3G? o Yes, because there is a growing need for faster/better data services. Increasingly, the mobile phone is becoming the mobile extension of the PC. That means that mobile phone users will continue to demand faster and better access to data services and the Internet and that multimedia applications and services experienced through the PC will begin to be experienced through the mobile phone. 17. Is SMART doing the same thing? What makes Globe 3G different from Smart 3G? Why is Globe 3G better? o Smart and the other telcos applied for 3G licenses. Last December 27, SMART, Globe, SUN and CURE were awarded 3G licenses. SMART has been very aggressive since then in coming out with articles, advertorials, billboards and wireless center merchandising. o Again, Globe is working to provide the best and most relevant services to its subscribers.

By end January and end February, individual interviews with the respondents will be conducted to gather feedback on the product and services. Feedback will both be qualitative and quantitative in form. 20. Who will take part in the trials? Why were they selected? What are their profiles? o Valued corporate accounts (total of 35 users; 5 users per company/corporate account) and selected Platinum subscribers will take part in the trials. 21.
