Final year BSc Microbiology student with knowledge and practical experience in a range of
microbiological subjects and techniques gained through both academic study and recent work
experience. Experienced in experimental planning, design, execution and reporting. Seeking a lab
based position in the pharmaceutical industry with the opportunity for further personal development
within the microbiological field.

Final year project: Epidemiology of E.coli 0157: Survival and control. Included a study of the
pathogenicity of E.coli in general and species 0157 in particular, reservoirs,
monitoring and possible future developments.

Level 6: Applied enzymology, Applied microbial & molecular genetics, Bio treatment,
Commercial biotechnology, Molecular biology and disease diagnosis and
Molecular therapeutics.

Relevant Work Experience


06/03 – 09/03 Microbiologist, Procter & Gamble, Egham.
Provided microbiological support for hair care products, including:

Development of a novel preservative system for a new 2-in-1 shampoo.


Literature searched existing preserving systems and utilised findings to
propose and test optimised systems.
Two new preservatives showed promising results in early testing and are now
undergoing full validation.

Design, execution and reporting of the microbiological stability testing for


hair care products under development:
Collaborated with the Hair Care Product Development team to develop a
microbiological testing regime, which met stretching product development time-
lines and GLP/GMP procedures.
Managed work priorities to ensure successful completion of testing to deadlines.
Analysed results and reported findings in a written report and presented them to
the Project Team.
Other Work Experience
09/03 – Pres. Team leader, Pret a Manger, London
Responsible for planning and managing the work of a team of up to 6 people.
This included induction and training for new staff, setting the priorities and
organising the day-to-day work of the team and establishing improved operational
procedures e.g. proposed and implemented a new, more efficient cashing-up
procedure.

09/99 – 06/03 Customer Service Assistant, Safeway plc, London


Worked as part of the Customer Service team, using effective interpersonal and
communication skills to understand and ensure efficient resolution of customer
queries and complaints.

Community Involvement and Interests


• Secretary of the Afro Caribbean Society (2002-2004). Initiated a recruitment drive which
resulted in an increase in Society membership from ~20 to over 50 people. Led a small team
that organised an Afro Caribbean festival, a first for this University. The event was attended
by over 100 people and raised nearly £1000 for an Afro Caribbean charity.

• Working as an Aid for the Federation of Black Housing organisation at their annual
conferences (last 3 years) and as an office administrator (07-11/00).

• Working as an usher for the Creative Arts, Hackney for a range of live literature events at
various locations.

Other Skills/Interests
• Student member of the Society for Applied Microbiology and regular reader of scientific
journals including ‘New Scientist’ and ‘Microbiologist’.

• IT – Considerable experience with a range of software including Microsoft Office and SIMS,
and an aptitude/interest to learn more.
