I joined 4-H since it has been a tradition in my family. I also joined 4-H because I want to learn things and find better opportunities. I love 4-H, and if I wasnt in it, I dont know what I would do. How has 4-H made you a better person? 4-H has made me a better leader and helped me get better with new skills that will help me in the future. What projects have you enjoyed most in 4-H? For livestock, I love showing market lambs. For nonlivestock, vet science. Plus I love livestock judging. Future plans? Going to South Dakota State University for pre-veterinary and animal science. What is your favorite fair food to eat at the county or state fair? County fair, cheese curds. State fair, alligator and bacon on a stick.

My favorite projects would be flower gardening, arts and crafts and clothing. Future plans? Finish middle school and high school and go to college. What projects have you enjoyed most in 4-H? I enjoyed the geology project most in 4-H. Future plans? Go to college for a degree in science. What is your favorite fair food to eat at the county or state fair? Poutine (fries, cheese curds and gravy) at the Minnesota State Fair.

My family has been a part of it for as long as I can remember, and of course I wanted to be too. How has 4-H made you a better person? Through 4-H I have learned so much about good leadership and how to set good examples for others. What projects have you enjoyed most in 4-H? The beef project is my absolute favorite thing. I have learned so much about responsibility and how hard work can get you pretty far in life. Future plans? I plan on going to college and I am leaning toward something in the nursing field. What is your favorite fair food to eat at the county or state fair? Cheese curds and fresh cut fries are always a must at the fair.

Jackson County young people celebrate National 4-H Week

Jackson County 4-H members join more than 6 million young people across the country next week in celebration of National 4-H Week, which takes place annually during the first full week of October. Jackson County 4-H leverages National 4-H Week to celebrate the great things the 4-H youth development program offers young people and highlights the incredible young people in 4-H who each day work to have a positive effect on their community. Research has proven participation in 4-H has a significant positive effect on young people. Recent findings from the Tufts University 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development indicate that, when compared to their peers, young people in 4-H are: Nearly four times more likely to contribute to their communities,

Also during National 4-H Week, hundreds of thousands of youth from all around the nation will complete a single, innovative experiment on 4-H National Youth Science Day, this year set for Wednesday, Oct. 9. The 2013 National Science Experiment, 4-H Maps & Apps, will introduce youth to the importance of geographic information systems and geographic positioning systems as they design and map their ideal park, use mapping to solve community problems and contribute data to the U.S. Geological Surveys The National Map program as citizen scientists through The National Map Corps project. 4-H, the largest youth development organization in the world, is a community of 7 million young people across the globe learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. In the United States, 4-H programs are implemented by the 109 land grant universities and the Cooperative Extension System through their 3,100 local extension offices across the country. Overseas, 4-H programs operate throughout more than 50 countries.

One of the first things I did as a 4-H summer intern was call a bunch of people Id never met and ask them to volunteer as assistants for project judging at the county fair. The long list of spots to fill made it immediately evident 4-H is an organization built by volunteer power. It runs on middle school kids who give up a goofing around with friends to lead day camps and parents who take vacation days from work to support the poultry project. Volunteers rock. However, I think National 4-H Week is an opportune time for volunteers to in turn recognize outstanding staff members who keep things together behind the scenes. There are the 4-H administrative assistants

like Jan, who was working at Wright County when I started interning. She kept all the 4-H show programs for county fair in meticulous order and was sure to send information to the local paper. And when she was brewing herself a cup of tea in the break room, sometimes shed make me one too, just because she knew it would brighten my day. Or Tarah, who had to enter a humongous stack of entry forms into a special software program that would spit out county fair project tags, many of which would be discarded by kids. Meanwhile, someone would walk in with a weird bug in a container to pass along to the master gardener in the office. Tarah wouldnt miss a beat, sticking in the insect in our tiny fridge to hang out with everyones lunch. And then theres my mother-in-law, who was an administrative assistant when teenage me was bouncing off the walls in the McLeod County Extension Office, pretending to answer the phones and date stamping my hands while waiting for a meeting to start or a van to leave. She never tossed me out on my ear, even when I obviously had too much energy. These days, I get to work with Staci, who, when she is wildly busy, still takes time to help me with my own deadlines by identifying smiling 4-H members in photos and corralling information. Putting in some of the craziest hours are 4-H program coordinators. Growing up, that was Bernie. In addition to her regular duties, Bernie recruited for and helped coach our general livestock judging team, spending summer evenings and weekends in hog barns and cattle pastures. When the team won a trip to nationals, she fundraised. When Goldfish crackers appeared in the county van air vents, she tried not to notice. Before competition, she wrote personal notes in the front of our judging notebooks. She expected a lot of us, and we grew up to meet the challenge. When she quit her PC job to work at the University of Wisconsin, I was heartbroken. But looking back, she had given more than any of us had a right to ask for. As an intern, my 4-H PC was Katie. Working inside the office, I saw how tough her job was. There are times a PC has to deny a state fair trip for wrongly filed paperwork, times she has to mediate a dispute between club leaders, times she has to listen to a laundry list of gripes that have nothing to do with her the griper just didnt have anywhere else to turn. Still, Katie bubbled with laughter, was infectiously ecstatic about 4-H summer camp and kept her eyes on what was best for youth members. She was my first real boss, and her conduct was a shining example. I also had the pleasure of seeing Jen in action. She was almost a Zen master in the way she managed a dozen elementary school kids all tussling for the same glue and asking questions that had already been answered. And when it was time to take 4-H winner photos at county fair, Jen remained good natured but brisk while lining up tired

4-Hers. Unfortunately, it is easy to burn out on a job requiring such a level of compassion, enthusiasm and diplomacy. As were in the midst of the search for someone to fill the role of 4-H PC for Jackson County, lets remember to support all our 4-H staff. They serve as role models, cheer leaders and educators for many youth in our community. And there are few jobs more important than that.
