lunch & dinner

November 28th is an American holiday to give thanks for a growing season and ample food for all to share. In Hanoi we can celebrate a variation of this tradition by giving thanks for surviving the summer and being surrounded by friends and family. Press Club gives us something more to be thankful for, on November 28 you can choose from a Relish with seasonal garden greens and mushroom dressing, a Boston seafood chowder with chives and garlic croutons, an authentic roasted American turkey with giblet gravy and cranberry sauce, chestnut stuffing and mashed potatoes with seasonal vegetables, a pumpkin and pecan pie with ginger sauce and rum raisin ice cream for dessert, with coffee, tea and home-baked cookies. Give thanks in eating!

A question that arises for any traveler, a question that sits in the mind of any lifelong resident, is what makes this place special. Whether it is a new city or an old familiar one, places have signatures, qualities about them that are unique and can be found nowhere else. While the answer varies for each individual, for this writer it is the food found on the streets of Hanoi that separate the city from everywhere else in the world. From the smells and sights from the pavement, to the position of the body bent over a steaming bowl, the experience of eating in Hanoi is unparalleled. Many may argue that air conditioning, clean tables, comfortable chairs, and elegant decoration are what make an eating experience memorable. While all these qualities are positive signs, particularly in terms of economic development and progress, it would seem that for Hanoians, a positive experience of eating could take many other forms as well. The richness of the eating experience of Hanoi street food comes from something else. From sitting low to the ground, watching the deft preparation of your meal by someone who has spent years perfecting a single dish, of being close to others enjoying the same food who strike up conversations naturally and friendly. All of these qualities are what make eating in Hanoi different from eating in any other city. More and more as we move into the future, cities are beginning to look alike; restaurant chains and supercenters give the experiences of eating and shopping a sameness; condominiums with all the standard features and interior designs provide a single aesthetic to living itself. Though these are sure signs of development, there is also something unique lost in this standardization, something that Hanoi is still holding onto in its outside eating culture. So where to find the best street food? As opposed to the countless other sources of advice about specific locations, this writer believes that there is no one best spot to find pho. Pho can be found in all corners of the city to varying degrees of quality depending on the time of day and the taster. Usually a spot becomes a best spot because one visits it regularly and knows the vendor, knows the time of day when its most fresh, has a multitude of positive memories associated with eating. Locations take on personal significance and this is what adds to the eating experience on the street. The same goes for Hanois other specialty street foods as well, for bun cha, banh cuon, pho cuon, bun dau, banh da cua, banh bao, xoi, chao, huu tiue, oc, and so on. When one considers why he or she lives in one city versus any other, the reason usually involves something that only that city has. Maybe it is the family, maybe the history, maybe the job opportunity. For this writer, one of the main reasons is the food found on the streets of Hanoi. 8

An important part of the holiday season, and perhaps even more important because it is often overlooked, is staying healthy. Gi gn sc khe l iu quan trng trong nhng k ngh l ko di. It is fortunate that in Hanoi, so much of this physical exercise is done in the public sphere; it is easy to observe and be inspired by. It is easy to see good examples and try to follow them. The early morning lake joggers and body twisting aerobic dancers are part of the many iconic images of Hanoi. However, the groups of people hip thrusting at 6am or playing badminton at sunset make for more than the sights to behold while commuting. The exercise culture of Hanoi is strong and is something that, if you can manage to get yourself caught up in, could help maintain your balance during the holiday season. Nevertheless, many complain that it is difficult to exercise or to stay physically active in a crowded city like Hanoi. It is true that traffic and air pollution make outdoor activity unpleasant at times. However, we can create the reality that we want to create. We can believe that it is impossible and it is. If we look for them, there are many opportunities to get out and be active in the city. Hanoi is a city that thrives on exercise of all kinds. Perhaps it doesnt resemble the lush parks or dirt trails of other greener cities, but there are ample spaces to move about, you just might need to redefine what exercise is to you.

One does not want to be told to limit the number of calories they take in. One does not want to be told to drink with the opposite hand to slow down. With delicious food and festive atmospheres all around, moderation feels a bit like a wet blanket. Perhaps one alternative to abstaining during this time of plenty is increasing physical activity to balance the body. Match the increase in giblet gravy and chestnut stuffing with an increase in exercise. Increasing your activity and then maintaining that level is not easy. Inertia is a powerful force to overcome in the early mornings or after a long day at work. It is said that routines take about three weeks to really take root, but once they do, they become automatic reflexes that no longer require such an effort to start. Routines of physical exercise are readily available around Hanoi. One has to simply look around to see hundreds of them every 16
