First choice for FRES

A modern, fully digitised, agile Armoured Fighting Vehicle well matched to the identified FRES Specialist Vehicle roles

450 ASCOD platforms already in service as Ulan (Austria) and Pizarro (Spain). A400M airportable without preparation, allowing immediate operational availability in theatre. State-of-the-art power pack with significant stretch potential. Shares a common engine family with PIRANHA V, offering significant cost of ownership benefits. The platform has class leading agility, employing the highly reliable MTU V90 diesel engine, rated 600hp, coupled with the Renk HSWL 106C hydromechanical transmission, and a torsion bar suspension. Fully stabilised turret, employing a high fire rate 30mm dual-feed, gas-operated Mauser automatic cannon with a 7 .62mm coaxial machine gun. The 30mm gun has a rate of fire of 800 rounds / minute and can fire a range of ammunition including APFSDS rounds. The advanced, third generation fire control system enables fire on the move, day / night, and automatic target tracking. Advanced open electronic architecture based on CANBUS enabling full sensor suite integration, and incorporating self checking BITE fire detection and fire extinguishing.

Hull and turret offer protection against 14.5mm armour-piercing rounds over the forward 60 arc and all round protection against 7 .62mm. Additional ballistic protection is available up to 30mm APFDS (Armour Piercing Fin Stabilised Discarding Sabot) through add-on armours. Antiland mine kits are also available. A low profile and reduced thermal and radar signature aid survivability.

Current ASCOD family includes AIFV and reconnaissance platforms, 105mm light tank, antiaircraft missile and gun system, integrated anti-tank guided missile capability, repair and recovery vehicle, command and communication vehicle, artillery observation post and self propelled 155mm howitzer.

ASCOD2 for FRES SV

Chassis provides a low-cost, low-risk route to a FRES AP2 initial operating capability of 2014 earlier if required. Significant weight growth capability to allow it to meet the wide range of roles required for the FRES SV requirement. Already configured into several FRES SV roles. GD will leverage the production and supply chain benefits from the Spanish Pizarro Phase 2 programme for FRES SV. Ensures: Maximum commonality between the UV and SV systems, particularly in mobility, EA, and survivability. Maximum synergy from the outset across both FRES UV and SV programmes resulting in cost, risk and timescale savings for both acquisition and through life support.
